HUMBABA: Songbirds & Scavengers
The Humbaba of ancient Mesopotamian lore was a figure at once beloved and vilified: a guardian and a menace, a friend and an enemy. He was the ferocious and deadly protector of the Cedar Forest, home to the gods; he bore the face of a lion and breath of deadly fire. Of Humbaba it was once written, “when he looks at someone, it is the look of death”. The terror that has befallen the rainy small town of Sweetapple, Washington is far less mystical than Humbaba, but it is no less horrifying. A string of gory killings has taken the town by storm: muddy footprints and a path of destruction and carnage are all that is left behind after a series of ax-murders.
In HUMBABA, you will take on the role of Noah Beaumont, a troubled young federal agent recovering from a devastating attack, during his investigation into this string of seemingly-random murders in Sweetapple. Along the way you will find yourself face-to-face with seedy politicians, unrepentant drug dealers, unhelpful sheriffs, and—if you are lucky—maybe even the truth.
The crux of HUMBABA is interaction with both the people and the things around you. As you discover more and more about this small town’s dark secrets, you will begin to develop an extensive network of clues, contacts, and theories. You will be able to question townsfolk about everything you have seen and heard during your investigation. With access to state-of-the-art forensic equipment and the vast databases of the FBI, as well as the murky channels of backwoods gossip and dirty secrets, you will learn very quickly that information is power.
There are many ways to resolve each and every challenge posed to you as you seek the truth: often, a little snooping and interrogating around town is just as useful as a well-placed call to the FBI, or to that criminal tipster who owes you a favor. Along the way you’ll make friends—and enemies—so it is important to manage your reputation with the local factions, too: everyone from the local sheriffs to out-of-town racketeers. Whether your forte is picking over crime scenes so thoroughly that no stone is left unturned, or simply shaking down locals for answers, you will find success—and challenges—waiting for you in Sweetapple.
