Yanfly plugins will be a good friend early on for getting a custom feel early on. But like many others have stated, YouTube is a great resource, there are many forums aside from the official ones here with communities of helpful people.
Outside of just MV a few tips I can give in general:
Get acquainted with a few text editors. Notepad++ is great for scripting with syntax highlighting, MSWord, or another office suite is helpful as well, not for scripting plugins, but for organizing ideas, and stories, and characters. Never get in the mindset where "OK I have MV, that's all I need." MV is going to help you Make you game happen. But 90% of making your game is going to come from outside of just what you do in MV itself. Graph Paper, notebooks, ect, all of these things are your friends.
Write down everything that comes to mind. Even if it all looks like gibbering nonsense at first, these snippets of ideas will help you cull things into a cohesive single idea and plan. Set short term reachable goals, and aim to reach them. These smaller goals will give you a sense of accomplishment and keep you moving forward.
Don't be afraid to use the base graphics and audio on your first projects. Use whats already available to you and make something, anything. The proverbial "Hello World!" game. Make it and be proud you took that first step down this fun path.
As you get familiar with the engine and the Editor there are a couple of methods for testing things out I can suggest. Make a Debug Room, a map outside of the rest of your game world where you can setup events and try things out to see how they work, before implementing them into the main game.
Hope you enjoy MV!
