I want to show Japanese characters in RPGVXAce Game

Hello fellow game designers, 


I'm trying to make a small language learning game and I'm having trouble implementing Japanese characters.  Japanese will only be used for the opening two dialogues and then it switches to English.


The Japanese text appears just fine when I type them in the "show text" area, but when I test the game, the characters turn into boxes and question marks.  


So far I have been using the font MS Mincho, and the one script I'm using is Yamfly's Ace Message system.  


I tried adding MS Mincho as a usable text in Yamfly's code, but it didn't seem to work.  


Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you use Yanfly's message system, then there are two or three sections that set the font name - the default one, perhaps in yanfly's core (not sure here) and in the messaging system. And depending on the order of the scripts, only the latest one will be effective - so you need to make sure you edited the correct place.


Additionally, a lot of people make the mistake and using the font's filename for the setting - that is wrong, you need to use the font name itself (which is visible when opening the font file in windows, but usually is NOT the filename of the font).


If those tips don't help, please copy&paste the code you're using to set the font, and where in the engine you copied it from, then we can look for other possible causes.

Hello Andar,  


Thank you for the quick response.  So first I checked to make sure I was using the correct name of the font and it turns out the name was not MS Mincho.  Since I couldn't find MS Mincho, I decided to use Yu Gothic.


Then I took your second bit of advice and looked for the possible spots to change font settings and found one in Yanfly's message system and in Yanfly's Core.  I added the Yu Gothic font to the two locations, but for some reason the Japanese still kept appearing as boxes and ???.  


Perhaps I misunderstood or didn't do something right.  Here are some images I took of the font, Yamfly's text and my own attempt at inserting the Japanese text.  


I truly appreciate the help.

You need to put the "Yu Gothic" in the first place, before any other font. Because it will take the first, then second and so on.
But it only takes the second, if the first is non existing. ;)

So it should look like "Yu Gothic", "VL Gothic"
Then it reads "Yu Gothic" first. :) (\s/)

As you can tell by the picture below, we got the text to work.  


It was just a matter of me choosing the correct code, and setting it as a priority above VL Gothic.

How did your language learning game go? I've contemplating the idea of making one myself and I'm curious how you found the process and whether you ended up completing a section of your game yet...

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
