I wasted 80$ and half a year of my life for a game nobody cared about.

@Yappy Monoxide Yeah, I know. That's a bit precise, but @Andar good for you guys! I kind of figured they weren't going to reply, but as I had such a strong opinion on this topic, my temper got fiery, so I spit out everything I was thinking. I really don't care whether or not they end up replying, I just got really annoyed at their complaining and drama. And @Diretooth Yes! That is literally me! If I make horrible games, I admit that they're horrible, I laugh at myself and move on!

Probably a lot of people said this here already but that shouldnt make you give up. 80 dollars is pocket change for game design, like... 2-3 bought facesets if you re lucky.
Also you spent half a year making the game. I'm sorry most people here spend years for one 4 hour project. *cough*
Always remember that it can be improved. I've put out 2 free games, neither was too popular, but the 4 comments i got from people who enjoyed them

was motivation enough to get better and make more. Just because it doesnt go undertale viral doesn't mean its time to give up. Do it until its good enough.

Pro-tip: If you didn't enjoy the process of making a game, you should probably look for new hobby.

I'm currently learning how to use RPG Maker MV. Got about 5 months or so wrapped up into making my first game with it. It'll probably take me at least another year to finish it and I know that my son and I may be the only two people in the world who ever play it. I'm totally cool with that because making the game is the part I really enjoy. While it would be awesome if lots of other people end up playing and enjoying it, it doesn't matter if they do.

Make the game that you want to play, especially if you're just starting out. If you don't enjoy the creative process, indie game dev probably isn't for you at this point in your life. Maybe in a year or two, you'll re-play your game, it'll stir up some good memories and want to take another shot at it. Perhaps you're just a little burnt out and need a break.

Reading these posts only makes me want to focus on my game more. If anything @Mega Man Volnutt, you've made me realize that making my game will take time and dedication; I won't give up on it!

Gods, I haven't worked on Mt. Story, AASB, or StarXed in a long while.

Maybe this is what I need to get the creative juices flowing again?

@GoodSelf And you shouldn't give up!

@Diretooth Same here :-D I don't expect to finish Ascension before summer's over, but this is an inspirational thread. I may finish earlier than I expected to.

The fact that one persons negative attitude spawns so much positive attitude and reinforces peoples goals in this way is great. It's clear how insulted some feel by his giving up and whining about his situation, and how that feeling bubbles up into the need to push forward on our own work, because we've come this far, giving up now would waste all that effort. Go team!

If he ever comes back to see. I'm kinda insulted he's taken the name of the lead character of one of my favorite games. >__>

You can take the lead name, doesn't mean you take who that character is.  Just look at my name.  I took it because I was absolutely infatuated with Taichi Kamiya from Digimon.  I used to aspire to be so courageous and fun loving.  I am nothing like that character, and the screen name I have is kind of my own now at this point.

Characters are fictional people we can try to emulate to be.  We can't ever actually be them.

@Mega Man Volnutt If you are reading this, I hope you don't take this entire thread the wrong way. Although a lot of stuff here may be upsetting or insulting, I'm fairly certain most of us aren't saying it just to mess with you or make fun of you. This is legitimately good advice. You shouldn't beat yourself up over the success of your game. I myself have been chugging along, working on a game continuously for about two years, and barely have any character art to show for it. I'm still working though, which means there is still a chance that my game will be made. If I were to give up completely, that chance would drop to zero and all the people and places I have worked so hard on will die. If you genuinely want to give up game development, go ahead. It's your decision to make, not mine. In my opinion, though, it isn't a good idea to drop an idea if it doesn't turn out perfectly after only six months. I started my game. It went ok, then Undertale came out, people accused me of ripping off key concepts and characters, and I had to change everything. Then MGSV came out, people accused me of ripping off key concepts and characters, and I had to change half of everything. Then Star Wars TFA came out, people accused me of ripping off key concepts and characters, and I had to change about a fifth of everything. Then Battleborn came out, people accused me of ripping off key concepts and characters, but this time, I didn't change anything because I no longer give a classy robot what other people think of me. Hang in there. The first stage of work is the most soul-crushing of all (there may be worse stages, but I haven't gotten there yet), but it's smooth sailing after that.

For some of you (Not mentioning any names), I thank you for inspiring me to go back to it. Looking at my project and comparing it to others made me feel like not working on it because it's just gonna get buried even deeper than it already was. I'd ask for help, nobody bothers either. I'm just one guy who is low on money. I can't just ask my friends to commission me some work, cuz even my friends want me to pay them to work on sprites, tiles, ETC. And I can't sprite for anything when it comes to Tilesets. Don't even get me started with trying to make my created tilesets fit in with an existing game which I was doing.

For others... The ones who thought I made this to garner attention. Look, I have a mental illness. I say things I don't actually mean, and I've always been pretty mad. Even before I started working on it. These are issues I don't wanna discuss here. Also, I was typing on a mobile device. Excuse me for my "horrible writing". For the ones who think I made this because "I couldn't get it approved" Yeah. I did get them approved already. It's actually surprising that for so many months and views the thread had, nobody even had the idea it existed or even if I created one in the first place.  I feel unwelcomed here now that I saw some of these posts. The bad ones at least. Keep it up, ones who are actually trying to motivate me and the others who are starting their REAL (Er... I don't know what to say. If you count RpgMaker as a true game developing experience. A lot of people don't think so.) game developing experience.

Re being "one guy who is low on money" - that puts you in the same boat as pretty much everyone else here.

Well I'm not surprised, people aren't to fond of fan made games here to begin with. Also pokemon obviously has tons of fan made versions already it's probably the most fan made game on rpg maker in general or maybe second to final fantasy anyways yeah you are going to have to do stuff wayyyy outside the box to catch anyones attention.

I find working on games fun though, it's hard to tell what your intentions are here since it seems like you don't find this fun. Are you planning to make a commercial game or?

If you've seen it (Assuming you didn't), it's actually not trying to recreate the Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen gameplay. Moreso a mix of various Final Fantasies and various Breath of Fires with it's own story that has nothing to do with any previous Pokemon games. But those plenty of people who just straight out use what's in of Pokemon Essentials, I've actually seen a lot of praise from those guys comparing to what I've got. I just happen to know that by randomly scrolling to Pokecommunity to see where my fangame is at. It's pretty easy to get people to your project at Pokecommunity even if it's already been done that way a million times.

Look, I have a mental illness. I say things I don't actually mean
As do a lot of us here. I apologize if anything in my post offended you, even though I was trying to be as inspiring as possible. I do the same thing sometimes, and it sucks. When something bothers me, and I have a strong opinion about it, I tend to blurt out a bunch of things that, to be honest, I could've thought out more. Nobody is 100% innocent when it comes to saying things we don't mean.

I feel unwelcomed here now that I saw some of these posts.
You should never feel unwelcome here. your first post caught us all off guard, made us a little mad, and all the frustration that we've endured from making our own games spilled out. You are always welcome here, that is why so many of these people were trying to inspire you.

I'd ask for help, nobody bothers either.
We try to. Just sometimes people have other things to do, things in their lives that they need to attend to, and they don't always have time to work for free. But hey, tell you what: next time you work on a game, and you can't find anyone to help, send me a PM and I'll see how I can help you :)

You're actually one of the people that inspired me to come back. Your post tells me to quit falling on my back and make my main character (A talking Minun (a pokemon) in a purple trainee's bandana) proud to be starred in a great game.

Some of the posts were really bad. Some of the inspirerers backstabbed me by liking his hateful comment. Sorry for making you all mad. Just after looking at everyone's projects and all were more sucessful compared to mine gets me pretty PO'd.

Sweet, I needed one. I've been low on resources tile and object related and that has also kinda made me unmotivated to continue. Few questions, Are you a spriter, and Do you accept fan games?

Well your attitude isn't making me jump up and down to go see it. Good luck anyways.

Don't start this again...

He mad, but he cute :kaopride:

Our latest feature is an interview with... me?!

People4_2 (Capelet off and on) added!

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
