I wasted 80$ and half a year of my life for a game nobody cared about.

I haven't finished a single game i've worked on in RPG Maker and i'm sure ive been using it on and off since like ten years ago.

Don't expect people to flock towards your game, only on the rarest of occasions does such a thing happen.  Stay faithful and things can change, but you can't expect to be uber successful off the bat, that's an extremely unreasonable demand to make.

Goes both ways, in my short time here seen so many people come and go post little help threads get what they want don't even say thank you and never come back. With the couple of problems I've had people were pretty prompt to help me out took a bit of time but nobody was rude even when the problem was obvious or stupid. But let's not get off track here. This person seems to understand why people reacted the way they did and it seems like people are mostly over it now anyways. Just one more thing I've been on many forums are some are just poison someone sees something they don't like they flame you and there are barely any rules to enforce it or it was staff or mods flaming so this site is very tame compared to some forums I've been is all I gotta say.
In the general terms of the internet i found this community mostly very friendly helpful and inspirational :)

The one time I finally broke down and posted a question, I got one response that just gave me the impression I should just magically have the knowledge already and was generally unhelpful. It made me feel like ****, and I eventually had to work out the problem myself. And it was so so fricking simple it would have required half a sentence to explain.
I guess it all boils down to how you learn/teach, I learn better from doing things myself than by having someone hold my hand and do the work for me, so I prefer answers to be a bit vague or just a hint/helpful nudge in the right direction. I know that isn't the same for everyone, maybe they hadn't meant to seem cold, but it IS real easy to misread people's comments on the internet as nobody writes like: "To change the size of the map, you can right-click on the name of the map in the bottom-left corner and select edit" He explained patiently. (An actual problem I had when I first tried to pick up MV)

I've only been on these forums since May, but I've only got good things to say about these forums and the people I've interacted with, maybe you have had a worse time than I, I don't really know, but you haven't even been here a month yet, so give it some time I'm sure your first impression will change.  :)

Possibly THE most important thing I can say to you @NightHerald is that you should NEVER feel scared to ask for help, you can't figure everything out yourself, and I've reached the point where I've just been lurking 'round the forums looking for questions I know the answer to, while I wait for inspiration to wack me upside the head with a 2 by 4 (with regards to my game) so if you ever need help just send me a PM and I'll see if I can help  ;)

Don't know if the OP is gone by now or not but all I can say is primarily you should be making games because it makes you happy, because its something you enjoy doing. Others have suggested good methods to get players to try your game out and etc... but if you aren't really doing it for yourself then all of it is for nothing.

I experienced this recently myself, I was trying to make a big rpg, one that could potentially sell really well and while I enjoyed making it for some time the game became hectic for me to work on (in part because of poor organization and some other aspects) and I was no longer even enjoying making it anymore. As much as the idea of the finished product enticed me, I had lost the passion for the journey of getting there. For months I didn't even want to look at rpg maker anymore but one day I decided I'd try to pick it up again and make something that's all about the enjoyment of putting it out there and having fun for me to develop. I still hope to re-capture that same passion I had when I made my first game.

If game making is something you truly enjoy doing, then don't give it up as it is a terrible thing to lose something that makes you happy. If you just don't enjoy it how you thought, that's okay to; you tried something new which is something a lot of people can be hesitant to do. I hope you can find something that can bring you great enjoyment.

i have spent $500+ on my project. that includes concept art, sprite work, and plugins excluding $80 for the engine which I assume that's the only thing you bought. I estimate ill be spending at least $1,500-3000 on this project. Maybe it will take off or maybe it will flop, who knows. that's just part of game development experience. take this failed project of yours and learn from it.

spend money to make money my friend. don't be afraid spend cash, plan everything out, make a budget. then see where you decide to go from there

Some of you say that people in this community are very cold, but I say that they're just human. Most of the time they are actually very nice, as I have been helped several times by these people. But, when it comes to self defeat, that is a pretty touchy subject, as many of us have probably had to deal with it ourselves. So when we see someone who is taking themselves apart over something like this, which may seem like something small compared to the problems that some of us have had, but for him it is hard. All we can probably see (forgive me if I'm putting words in anyone's mouths here) is that someone is complaining over something like this, and some people probably thought, "That's it? How do you think I feel right now? What do you think I have to deal with?"

I think sometimes, when you realize exactly how easy the answer is after someone posts a solution, you feel really dumb and upset. Trust me, I've had to deal with that exact same thing sometimes. Sometimes it's so bad I have to give myself a face palm when I've read the answer, because I couldn't believe I didn't get that. Sometimes yes, the community can be a little harsh if people are asking about the most basic functions of the engine because they feel that the person should have learned how to do that on their own or with the help of a tutorial instead of asking for hand holding in a question when, if you're at that level, you're more than likely going to ask another basic question later.

I've bought the DS pack for RPG VX a long time ago and converted it to MV. I'm actually using it for my game. No idea how that adds up, but for the budget we're in, can't go any further. (And no, I am not releasing my conversions. That's technically piracy with tilesets.)

i recommend getting your own assets, think games like "To the Moon" or Corpse party". those are rpg maker games that took off! corpse party even has its own anime I believe.

I'd like to suggest the OP edit the first post to elaborate that they haven't left and are staying so that people just now seeing the topic won't react to just the first post as many people are wont to do.

@TriceratopsX I tend to like to figure things out myself, but there comes a point where you just want answers.

Thanks a lot. I appreciate it. <3

Just to make my last post for the night, there were times I wanted to give up, the budget, the time and the effort was gonna kill me I thought. but heres the truth, GAME DEVOLOPMENT IS NOT EASY. Its never easy and never will be. If you're gonna give up on spending a mere $80, then you have no business making a video game and complaining why nobody likes it or even gives a **** about. Its cold and harsh yes, but its also the truth.

Why can't people just be nice when replying? I genuinely don't get that. Some people are just so cold here.  It took the fact that you had a mental illness for people to be nice...
o_O You should see other places.. other internet places. Cold?? Here?? Geez-louise! I've got some links for you if you ever feel the need to implode, explode, then feel yourself lose all hope in humanity. They're dev sites too! Even the trollish people here are polite comparatively! Why can't people be nice?... I dunno, just human nature. Most people irl are nasty, irrational, and hateful but most of all entitled. This gets pumped up to eleven when they go on the internet and can remain anonymous. I'm sorry if anyone disagrees but I lost my faith in humanity decades ago - and the internet only serves as a reminder of why. But HERE? No way!

@Mega Man Volnutt I read this thread the first time I logged in. If you think this is bad, imagine having people counting on your project and it never comes to fruition! This happened to me in my 20s - and let me tell you, it's much worse than being or feeling like an outsider to a community (like the pokecom.) Nobody noticed your game there? Make another one when your finished. Then another, etc. You see, real software development has to do more with passion than with cool assets or mechanics. These things come later. Here's an example: Way back in the 1980s I was working on a game and for 95% of the time the sprites were just plain colored boxes, no sound no music. Why not? Because I was still coding the mechanics and the gameplay. Assets like characters or enemies can come last. As long as you develop your art skills in the meantime, who knows how long it will take to finish. If it takes two years to finish even just a demo, that's two years to work on your spriting skills. And that's what I did. I released the finished game as shareware on BBSes and I never saw a dime. But I learned from it. And eventually I recieved a shoutout from some peeps in the demoscene. Yours truly, the CoWBoY was known world wide! And that helped me to talk to some really gifted people who actually became AAA one day. Isn't that amazing? I have never seen a dime, nor expect to, from any of my endevours. BUT - that's why you need the passion. The skills will come. But the passion comes first! Good luck with everything, and keep that fire in you alive!

@Mega Man Volnutt, nice to see you again and welcome back. Sometimes, I feel down and frustrated RPG maker too. RPG maker MV is an engine, so it is going to a long time to learn like learning many subjects in a college. Please stay strong.

I've been using various RPG Maker engines for the past 15 years, and have yet to put a full game out. I have a demo out (for a now abandoned project), that only a handful of people even downloaded. And I got exactly one review. Truth is, I overfilled my plate for that game. But I learned from it and moved on to something simpler yet more fun IMO. Heck, I've even written a full length novel that hasn't been published due to several real life things getting in the way of me focusing on making that a career. Anyway, this kind of thing (RPG making) has and will always be a fun hobby for me. And like many people have said already, this community is a pretty great place to be. :)

TL;DR: When you find your passion, don't let anyone take that away from you.

He mad, but he cute :kaopride:

Our latest feature is an interview with... me?!

People4_2 (Capelet off and on) added!

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
