I was hoping to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the software with those who have been using it. There were some negative feedback on steam, and it got me to worrying the product maybe isn't worth it at this stage.

My goals for a VN are telling stories (from my books) while using art to portray the characters and scenes. I guess more like interactive novel and less choose your own adventure.

What are some restrictions with the art resources I can make, and music. Also, is it possible to use a custom font that isn't in English? I did notice in the trailer you can localize the projects into say Japanese. Do i really need the DLCs to make what I desire to make?

I think what you are trying to achieve fits perfectly within what VN maker can do. That said, the game is a bit buggy at points and the documentation not 100% clear at some points as to regarding what does what. It depends on how "flashy" you want to make your game. If it is just a simple story with characters appearing on the scenes etc there should be no problems. If you want to add movies, minigames, screen effects etc I would probably (wish I had to be honest) hold off a while until all bugs are dealt with.
