Hey friends ;)

I have been looking all over and i am back from a long hiatus surrounding rpgmaking <3
I was hoping one of you might help me out, i want to make costum-made charsets, and i was wondering what the best scale is for making medium to big sized images (sprites) "Example; 300x200".
Like in a sense when i would like to make a tree or a bush in 1 single file, what is the best Canvas size to work with?
Also how to best calculate that properly! (for grid size etc in gimp or equivalent software)

I tried the manual but couldn't get the numbers from there since it reads like having some skill in past engines is a pré, also i hope it stems well with auto-tiles and tile-sets too!
If one of you or more can help me out, you will have my eternal gratitude!

Thanks in advance you are all awesome folks!

Sincerely Sinmorph.

For single Charset with one Char and $ before Filename.

x size / 3

y  size / 4

and you have the sice of the single pictures of your charset.

Or press F1 and read the helpfile, there is a folder about resource specifications .

Its written like Tutorial.

Thank you for the fast reply! but as a total noob as of yet, what do you mean by x size / 3 and y size/4 my question was more because i read the Tutorial files but couldnt understand how to use it properly, like how it corresponds to image size when editing, i hope you can help out!

Sincerely Sinmorph.

What Bex was saying is that a sprite (or walking character) can be any size really. You just need to have your animation frames arranged 3 columns by 4 rows, spaced equally. Then to make the program divide it correctly, add the $ at the beginning of the file name.

This as well as specific resource sizes is detailed in the Help manual (accessible from within MV) under Asset Standards.

edit to add: I realize I failed to address some of your questions.

I use Gimp and canvas size depends on what I am making. I have my standard set to 512 x 512 as in Ace, that is the size of a tilesheet B-E. But it really doesn't matter when creating, as long as you have room to work and put a tile into a proper sized sheet. (I'm not yet certain what that is for MV yet.)

As for grid size, for standard tiles and characters, you'd want to set it to 48 x 48, as that is the grid size used in MV.

I tried the manual but couldn't get the numbers from there since it reads like having some skill in past engines is a pré

I'm not sure what you mean by this. If you are talking about the * statement comparing size to Ace, that is merely a note of reference for those who are familiar with Ace's standards.

You can't get numbers like that from the manual, because those numbers simply do not exist.
All sprites have had relative sizes since several Makers age, and you can make your sprites any size you want as long as you obey the rules for the structure.

Grid Size of MV is 48x48 pixels - that should be the base and default size you're working with.

Based on that, you as the artist decides what size you want your sprite to be - not look up any numbers, you are the one who sets the numbers.

You want a cat sprite that is smaller? Decide to base your sprite as 48x36. You want a tree sprite that is taller? Decide to set your tree to 48x96.

After you decide on your spritesize, then you multiply the x-axis by three and the y-axis by four, because the sprite needs three animation frames (horizontal) in four directions (vertical).

The resulting numbers will be the canvas size for that specific sprite.

However, stuff like facesets, battle animation sheets, tilesheets etc all have specific size requirements... so it's a valid request!

The best thing to do is make a fresh project, and check the 'img' folder. That'll be full of the 'RTP' (or basic included) art, which has all the image sizes correct for you to check out.

If you want to make sprites that can be used with the rest of the default resources and not look out of place, just look at the default resources themselves and make your sprites match.

For instance, trees can take two tiles or four tiles - that's 96x48 or 96x96 with a bit of transparency around them. Just look at what's already there and make yours to match.
