I think you could use the same idea of "Stormbringer" or "Stormcaller" to elemental mages

"Wintercaller" for example?

Then of course you have those that just don't make sense like how in Pokemon Steel beats Fairy because... reasons i guess?

Something of a tangent, but I think Steel beats Fairy because fairies in mythology have a massive problem with iron. That's why horseshoes are lucky; they protect you from the fairies (and anything else if you chuck 'em hard enough).

Anyhow, I'm contemplating a project, to be started after my current game is done, and I'm wondering what the heck I'm getting myself into. The idea is that the goddess of color was murdered a long time ago, and thus the entire world is in grayscale except for magic, which is the last remnants of her power. The story starts at a school of magic (or more precisely, on the way there), but the party will have to leave after the school is attacked, and from there the adventure should range across the world. In the meantime, the protagonist starts having dreams of the world when it was in color. I've got the core of the plot worked out, including who the protagonist is and what she means to the world and why she can access every color of magic (represented by a job system) where most magic-users can manage, at most, three—I just don't have the finer details yet. But I think I can fill in the blanks on that easily enough.

What I'm not so sure about is what to do about the art. I mean, it should be easy enough to transfer some RTP maps or tilesets into GIMP and make them grayscale, but I'm not sure if I want to go with the RTP. But then, if I purchased something off the store, I'm not sure that I have the rights to make a grayscale copy. And beyond that, I need to figure out what kind of mapping would work best in gray—simple, or complex? Complex might give you more detail so you could tell what everything is, which could be a problem in grayscale, but then it might also provide too much clutter that doesn't look pretty without the colors. I need an artistic opinion, I think, preferably before I shell out money for something.

I also need to figure out what I'm going to do about character portraits. I figure that the standard RTP faces don't have enough distinguishing features without hair color and so forth, so I'm planning to use full busts from some other source. This would be much easier if I could draw. I'm considering getting a manga maker program to compensate for my artistic deficits, but I'm not sure what to look for in one. Does anyone use such a thing for character portraits, and if so, which one would you recommend?

Well, items are really just a way to create an effect. What effects do you want your players to have reasonably easy access to?

Common answers are hit point regeneration, magic point regeneration, and curing states like Poison and Knockout. You also may wish to create items for other things, like temporarily increasing a stat, permanently increasing a stat, adding experience, damaging a monster (not with a weapon, with something like an expendable "bomb" item), inflicting a status effect on an enemy, or even creating some sort of effect on the map (like opening a cave with an entirely different sort of expendable "bomb" item). So, think about what your game needs.

The truth is, you can really call your items whatever you feel like. You could heal lost hit points with a potion, an herb, a health crystal, a nanomachine injection, a scroll of heal wounds, a drop of ichor from Things Man Was Not Meant to Know . . . the list is endless. So, think about your game world. "Fantasy" covers an enormous range. If you want it to be grim and gritty, maybe your healing item is the blood of something. If you want to recall folk magic traditions, maybe your healing item is an herb. "Potions" can come from witches, alchemists, or all kinds of arcane brewers. If all magic comes from a religious source, maybe it's holy elixir. If you want players to mess around with a cooking system, maybe healing items are just food. It's all down to your game world.

hi, it been a while since I came on the forum anyway. The reason why I'm posting is I have an idea but I can't seem to figure out how to implement it.

ok so in battle you have miss, hit, crit, what I want to do is put in graze
so it would look like this when Attacking: Miss > Graze > Hit > Critical Hit
when being attacked: Critical Hit > Hit > Graze > Miss

so a miss has a chance to become graze a graze has a chance to become a hit has a chance to become a crit same thing when you're attacked but the opposite way also a graze would do -50% less damage then a normal hit and a crit would do +50% damage.

if anyone could help me with this i would be so happy

Hello! I’m working on my 2nd game right now. The first was just 1 room and me getting to terms with RPG Maker. Now I want to try having an actual story. Is there something like a repository of kinda generic beginner ideas. I mean something like a D&D adventure path that you can throw your own characters in just a kind of framework to tell your own story for beginners to come to terms. Actually maybe it should be even more generic than D&D, something completely setting independent type of set up. I have some characters I came up with that I want to use, but no real idea for a story.

I think the archetypal generic rpg idea is, "Collect the things to stop the Big Evil Thing from destroying the world." There's also the standard subversion of that plot, where collecting the things actually makes matters worse, either because the Big Evil takes them from you or because of something else.

I think these plotlines have staying power because they provide plenty of opportunities to show off cool gameplay. If the gameplay is awesome, people will generally forgive the predictable plot.

Prison escapes are pretty good setting-agnostic type of game to make.

Adventurers have been waiting for a table at their local tavern for an hour, an rpg about nothing.

I have been thinking about some story ideas I'v had in my head a while now and how I can make them interesting. And then it hit me that I want to make a game where you play as different characters. Some having a big impact on the story and others might be characters you only play as once or twice during the game to advance the story and give some variations.

Some of these characters are good at different things so the idea is to make it that some of them will change on the game mechanics a little to make it unique to that character. For example you play as a Hero and you will fight a lot of say Orcs and then you play as this alchemist that is better at solving mysteries and riddles. Which would make you want to stay as far away from battles as possible. How do people feel about that concept?

I'm currently creating my first game and I got inspiration from some of my favorite games & shows. I got some story points from an anime called Hai To Gensou no Grimgar, and some armor/weapon/item ideas from diablo. So if you can't come up with a story of your own try to get some ideas from your favorite shows/games and see how you could build upon them. For example my Game is called "The World of Illusions & Memories" where you come to a world you know nothing of nor remember your past. so you go on an adventure to find these memory shards, who happen to be the main evils in the story, to seal them away as well as regaining your memories and remember who you are and where you came from. So my opinion/advice..is look at your favorite shows/games and see what you could grab to build story... Idk if this helped you but if it did I'm glad!if not I'm sorry :c

Isn't that interesting?
