@SageHeist I don't mind either idea in a game, but I like the first one a lot, bringing a character back to somewhere they've been for the final battle is really fun if there's a juxtaposition between the area's mood before and the mood after.
Oh the mood will for sure be different. I am making this game for a class and in order to do it I have to make this game able to help someone other than for my personal enjoyment. My claim is it will raise heavy moral questions and themes. So the beginning will start off nice and happy but turn dark and dreary as the adventure goes on. My plan is to have the main character come back to ruin. But if I can think of something else for what to happen to the village you start in but still is darker I will mention it on here and see what people would like more.

So most RPG's tend to be do dungeon, view story, go to town, view story, do dungeon, etc

Which is pretty much the build blox standard of any RPG unless it's a free roam like Elder scrolls which is view intro the muck about the rest of the game. :p

So currently making my own RPG at the moment and I've added a few more things to the game.

Dungeons: 4 Dungeon quest, trials, objective's etc name still pending.
So each time the player enters a new dungeon they have 4 optional objective's to do. These can be kill all enemies on the map, find all treasure chest, defeat the really strong monster, solve the puzzle etc.
Each time the player completes one of these optional they are reward with a 8 items of there choosing. Which can be either weapons for the hero's or gear and if they complete all 4 objective's they are reward with a very special item.

More then just walking.
So it's easy to make a dungeon where you go from point A to Point B then from Dungeon to tower all purely by walking. At the moment I'm currently adding things like jumping over holes, down ledges, climbing up mountain sides etc etc to add abit more variety to how you travel and maybe even swimming.

Hunts!
So when you get to town's you can go to the local pubs and accept hunts, which are dangerous monsters that you can go to the over world map and hunt down which of course yields glorious loot!

Hidden side mini dungeons.
I'm also adding small hidden dungeons which ain't a requirement to do but more like a side thing for the player to do. But these dungeons aint pointed out to the player during the story. They have to go out and find them there self's. Course NPC's will give hints about the surrounding areas.

So what do you guys think?

@gigaswardblade wait. If the entire race is lolis, why would Mystia care at all that she had DFC? Wouldn't beauty standards among the whole race be much different?

i said she gets mistaken for a halfling. shes a light elf, and light elves age the same as normal people except that they grow slightly taller than humans. imagine if you were a member of a tall race but were still short at age 15 and were mistaken for the midget race.

Another one I had the idea of would have a secret way to get an item that is just weird and out of place that you cannot sell and cannot trash.

that sounds exactly like something i would do.

i'm gonna do something a little different this time. instead of character critiques, i'm gonna ask for a landscape critique. by that i mean the way my world map looks. i've changed the layout quite a lot of times over the past few months, so not many things you see here will stay the same. i cut out a few structures and islands that you don't visit in this game in order to not clutter the map with stuff you dont visit. i'll go over the names of the provinces and who or what lives in them, along with the region's dungeon (if they have one). ignore the blurriness of the pictures. the pics were too big to post without shrinking them down, and i dont have photoshop yet so i had to use MSpaint.

this is riften:

and these are the boarders:

1: merigate (mare-ih-gate) is the starting region for party 1. its residence are mostly humans, but there are a lot of untamed wilds around the edges of the communities. the biggest city in the world is located at the south west coast of this region. this is also the secret home to the beastkin. they live in a secluded kingdom near the border that is engulfed in fog. the only way you could get around is by following a scent trail. the kingdom it's self isn't that foggy. there are quite a few relics from a past war that are still left lying around to be explored. dungeon: hidden stronghold

2: heldrich (hel-drich) is a dense forest area filled with hostile wildlife. the half or the region closer to merigate is inhabited by the ahn'tlo which are a race of human shaped animals. the forest is considered a sacred place where only those who they deem worthy can enter. deeper into the woods live a race of monstrous, un evolved animal people called the ferals who are a constant threat to the ahn'tlo. the woods themselves have strange mutated plant life that range from gigantic flowers to massive root towers that are made of stone. the half that's closer to the akinomori region, however, is much more hospitable. i haven't decided who owns that castle yet. dungeon: stoneroot citadel.

3: presko (press-co) is a militarized region owned by the R.D.C. (riften defense corps) which is mostly considered the human's army. other races can join, but its mostly an army of humans. they use a mixture of swords and machine guns. their job is to defend riften from danger. there also lies the ruins of a city where horrible magic experiments were conducted and almost caused the end of all life. the whole city was lowered into the ground by the goddess so nothing could escape into the rest of the world. there is also a hidden temple in the woods, and a smeltery thats on the other side of the crevice that is half owned by presko and halu vaans. the other parts of the region are mostly untouched. there is no dungeon.

4: alsidia (al-sid-ee-ah) is the most racial friendly region in the continent. the city is full of many different races and cultures. buy that doesn't mean that this region is completely safe. there's an untamed mountain range that looms over the region. it is unknown why there are so many orcs in this region. (until later in the game when it turns out that the orcs made their fortress in the mountain. caves and ruins are hidden throughout the wooded areas of the region. there is also a really strange building near the giant wall that is rumored to be a link to another world. there is a building near the edge of the woods that i was thinking of removing. dungeon: orcan fortress.

ill probably finish this tomorrow since i dont know if i can keep this up tonight. ill leave some notes for what you can expect from these regions until i can finish their description. i swear to oogala i am not just being lazy. for now, just let me know what you think of the layout of it. ps i haven't thought of a reason for the wall and crevice's existence, other than to temporarily separate the 3 parties. but i will some day.

Hello would like to post the synopsis of the game I'm making...
It's rather long because I kind of reused what I've written in the Job Request forum. Here goes!
Long Synopsis
Enter Althea, a seemingly ordinary girl walking in a pathway. Equipped with a shortsword ( a memento from her late father, she tries to defend herself a group of bandits. However, she was defeated and overwhelmed with the mass of opponents. She was ready to accept the dark fate that awaits her until a mysterious light appeared from nowhere and whisked the struggling girl away!

She found herself in another predicament-being trapped in a maze of hedges with no exit in sight. Using her wits and bravery, she gradually defeats the monsters that stand in her way( with the help of the mysterious goddess statue that heals her). She found herself in another level with two houses in sight. She will meet Veena, a seemingly egoistic and narcissistic witch, and Kaara, a sorceress that looks eternally bored. Together, they explained to her why she is here.

Every twenty years and when the witches accumulate enough crystals (their medium for immense magic), they will summon someone in the brink of death. In return, the summoned one must be the person to free them in this hedge maze of a prison. Althea was puzzled and asked how an ordinary girl like her can do something like that. They answer that in order to free them, a ritual which must need the cores of the dungeon queens. To obtain these cores, Althea must defeat them. The witches cannot enter these dungeons. Therefore, they needed external help.

The now hero yet ordinary Althea must face these elemental based queens alone. Luckily, the witches will aid her by providing necessary items in exchange for magic crystals which monsters drop. Evron, the summoned hero from four decades before, can craft equipment if only Althea can get the needed resources. Moreover, her stats can be increased by blessings granted by the witches if only she is closer to them.

Can Althea strengthen herself with daily training ( note: grinding) and have the bravery to face the unwelcoming and challenging dungeons? What will she discover in herself and this strange community of witches? What path will she take?

Gameplay

Something reminiscent of Princess Princess Episode 1.5
Grinding; there are only four main dungeons.
Blessings System where you get status increase when you have reached a certain closeness with a witch character/s

Other important Info:
The game will be short. Very Short.

@pandadodod I must say I'm not familiar with Princess Princess, but I do like the main concept. I like exploring both real and fictional cultures, so the idea of exploring the witch's way of of life is very appealing to me.

@gigaswardblade I find it kinda weird that the army has it's own separate society, how did such a thing occur.

@trouble time Prin Prin is a game by Archeia Nessiah... It's good if you play it but is rather short of a game. Also, will try research how an isolated community may behave. I'm open for ideas and suggestion though...

its a military base, not a society. they only live there because they serve the military.

though to be honest, im not so sure how much i like the idea of a whole region just being a military base anymore.

Happy Tuesday y'all. I'm out of my element here in this thread! Talking about story ideas and things alike is just not my usual area. My apologies for the wordy post as well, also not a normal thing for me!

A couple months ago I wrote down some ideas, revised them about a week ago, and then fleshed them out once more. I'm at a bit of a conundrum and could use more eyes now. I have picked out of my notes, this background I wrote up for the evil corporation in my world. For simplicity I refer to the names as "The Gas Corporation" and "Governments" to remove some of the sillier fantasy stuff. The world itself is a Steampunk Fantasy setting. Also included is just some artwork from my project for a visual feel.

eCZqbZc.png
The Gas Corporation has monopolized natural gas, and supplies power to the entire planet with it’s massive gas power generators. There are three major Governments, and The Gas Corporation is considered a neutral entity on the planet. But their is a corrupt executive running the gas business. High prices are charged to smaller towns in an attempt to force the populace into the larger cities to become part of a bigger tax collection scheme.

Some towns have become completely independent of needing gas, in spite of The Gas Corporation, and live very simple lifestyles. Other towns have chosen to create their own generators, even though it’s against the law, and they risk punishment.

The Gas Corporation has it’s own private military.

The one bit out of that write up, to me, that is most important is the mention of forcing the smaller towns to the bigger cities if they want electricity. Otherwise they have to pay an outrageous price. There are plenty of holes in the idea, given the information I have mentioned. Thus, I am not married to most of it. But I would like to keep the part of the smaller towns being forced out of their homes because they can't operate without power.

One hole I think I have plugged in my head:

Why won't the 3 Governments ally and take over the gas? Because the Corporation will just cut their access to power and use their private military, and their power advantage to quiet the rebellion.

But besides that I can't come up with a solid evil story for it, and I would like any feedback you guys got. Creative writing is just not my thing! I liked math in school, it made more sense!

Thank you for any help in advance.

@Noobk I really like the idea personally. Though you should definitely come up with better names for the company than just "The Gas Company" even if you want to keep it simplistic. If you don't want to be bogged down by silly fantasy titles, look to more popular fiction for inspiration. "Stark Industries", "E Corp", "Oscorp", ect. Or even the real world "exxon","BP", and so on. Simple names that aren't a confusing fantasy mess :) Ignore all that if that was only a place holder. You're statement just made it seem like that was what it was going to be.

There's a lot you could do with this as an antagonist however to give suggestions I'd have to know if you have a protagonist already made, what they're like, what they're goals are, ect.

To find conflict in the story we'd need to see who is the one facing it ;)
Oh and to the "why won't the governments just seize the means of production" I think a more realistic way to do it would be to have lobbyists deep in the pockets of the government. Like why do countries often not do much to advocate green energy irl? Well they get paid out and pestered and are given lots of donations and free trips and stuff by lobbyists that work for the companies. Why does the government allow pharmaceutical companies to hike up life saving medicine costs to 15x what they were to make extra money? Same answer as before. Or people with the companies best interests over the government/people are actually working in the government. Like ex members of the company work in the government where they would obviously not work against the interests of their company. Basically corruption. Happens irl all the time.

Them also having a privately funded militia to "guard their properties and factories" but actually are used for nefarious reasons ie putting down protests from their ground workers who are treated poorly and are trying to unionize, assassinate people who are against them, have them destroy bootleg generators they find, and so on. Having them outright be like "we have this actual military and will murder all of you if you don't comply" doesn't seem to make much sense. Them attempting to have an outward appearance of a good company with the peoples best interest at heart but being secretly corrupt makes rings more true to a real life evil corporation.

@Noobk Really as it is they likely have enough power to do whatever they want, so my suggest would be to find something that their money can't buy. I mean just making them greedy would be extremely boring wouldn't it. Now I don't know what they could want based on your setting, I mean heck they could be secret servants preparing the way for Nyarlahotep to rule or something but that's all I've got for now.

i'll continue from where i last left off. if you've forgotten what my map looks like, then just click the spoiler thingy and you'll see my previous post. i feel like maybe i should keep these descriptions shorter this time. mainly kuz i didn't put too much thought into every single region.

5: halu vaans (hah-loo-vans) is the starting region for party 2. it's ruled by the light elves and is home to many magical creatures. that's it really. dungeon: the hydro complex.

6: gyagyo (gee-ah-gee-oh) it's... uh... it has a savannah? and a garden maze for a dungeon? ok, i got nothing for this region. i actually had it removed for a short while, but i wanted all 3 parties to explore an even number of regions, so i brought it back. dungeon: gracia's garden.

7: xio (jhee-oh) is a vast desert full of dangerous monsters. this region is home to the dark elves and the sanders which are a race of sand people and are mostly all male. there's a volcanic region near the top of this region. there is no dungeon in this region.

8: aggron (ag-ron-) is a treacherous frontier mountain range. the only people that live there are the halflings. they moved there to escape the war between the light and dark elves that happened years ago. there's also a kind of wild west town thats in front of the mountain range. dungeon: aggron's inferno. there is also a power plant located inside a valley next to aggron that supplies power to the entire continent.

9: akinomori (ah-kee-no-more-ee) is the starting region for party 3. the whole region is full of trees that are always in autumn. it is home to the oni, which are a race of monsters that have become to look more human like over a long period of time. this was where the original orcs were first made, though its mostly ogres that run amok in this region. the other orc types have moved all around the world. it is also home to the tengu, which are a race that originated from fallen angels. the worlds biggest technology manufacturer and scientific research lab named "kolcade industries" is located in this region. your party goes there in order to stop a corrupt ceo from messing with a scientific anomaly that could destroy the world. there is also a dead forest filled with youkai. dungeons: cretin's hideout and kolcade industries.

10: vensil (ven-sil) is a big open plains region. there are a few mountains and a second frontier that hold a lot of secrets from ancient times. there is no dungeon.

11: kamborion (kam-bor-ee-on) is an alpine region that is home to a type of crystal called "kamborionite" (or should it be kamborium?) which is a crystal that does a lot of things like make its own energy and making for powerful weapons and armor. the sprites, which are a race of people with bug wings and antennas, used to protect the forests and wildlife has now become more industrialized and have built a city that has so much pollution in the air that its blocked out the sun. they'd cut down entire forests just to find even a tiny bit of kamborionite. there is a swamp full of toxic marsh that is home to giant crabs insert crab people reference here. there is also a dark and creepy mansion on top of the mountain side to the right that is rumored to be home to a vampire. dungeon: maccauley manor
ps, that giant person standing in the field is a robot and will be saved for another time.

12: elmaison (el-may-sun) is the snowy region.

I can't believe I did not use the word placeholders , because you are correct. That is what the names are! I felt it would detract from the goal I was trying to achieve.

Thank you @Applesaws & @trouble time for the good feedback. Looking for an alternate motive besides money, and the wolf among the sheep idea with the lobbyists, are both a thinking approach and story element I needed. A lot of other great content too in the spoiler.

I need to spend some time revising my plot before I post it for feedback. It took me a long time just to cut fat out of The Gas Corporation notes. I'm just very nervous about posting any creative writing I do! But I got to get over that if I want to improve my ideas. I'll get the plot posted though for cannon fodder. I won't have any edits though with the new concepts I was just given.

A for what it's worth, the name of the gas company is "Konika Gas Corporation." Hence the K in that graphics asset I showed. The company is a tool to drive 2 other individuals to work together as allies. It's the side story to the main story. I think? o_O This stuff makes my head hurt.

I'll start by answering the question you asked and get to some critical commentary later. Consider the *internal* elements of KGC. Maybe there's a vice president scheming to take the top job, or maybe the mid-level guys suddenly decided they don't get paid enough. You can have the conflict's effects spread outside the corporation - from the outside looking in, everything looks fine, until the company decides to cut off supply to some village or something, and then have the hero slowly learn the source of it as the plot develops.

Now for the commentary: Private militaries aren't really a thing. "But I read XYZ about Blackwater..." The reality is the US government is *really* bad about wasting money. Most 'military contractors' provide support services such as mechanic and electrical work, because the Army underpays, so an Army mechanic is going to leave after his contract expires, join up with KBR, and make six figures doing the same job that Uncle Sam was paying him minimum wage for. However, it's not as if the mechanic's loyalties are ever up in the air, and the root of the paycheck is still the US government - it's just at a market rate now.

Similarly, the few military contractors that are 'trigger pullers' are usually special forces guys who get too old to do special forces stuff any more, but not old enough to take up shuffleboard. The Army isn't smart enough to find a good use for them, so they usually end up in a 'private' outfit either training security guards or being security guards. Again, former US service member, loyalty never up in the air, and the root of the paycheck is still the US government. The only 'mercenary' I've ever known was an ex-green beret who trained local security guards to man the watch towers, which freed up the use of soldiers with the added bonus of making the first line of contact someone who spoke the local language. But yeah, it's not like the guy was an "Expendable" or such.

Why should you care? It adds a bunch of plot holes to your story. Reality is that a few key politicians are a lot cheaper than an entire army. For example, the Hessians at the time of the American Revolution are taught as being mercenaries in grade school, but they were technically soldiers in the service of the Hessian prince, and the British paid off the prince. A 'private military' like you suggested would be liable to take over the company in a coup if it were properly funded, which it likely wouldn't be because companies have to cut costs. Frankly, militaries are the one thing that free markets absolutely suck at.

My suggestion is to have the national militaries effectively work for KGC because their leadership has been bought off. You can set them up as the evil puppet-master that gets others to do their dirty work for them.

Now for my question:

So, it's common in RPGs to have your hero be some kind of 'chosen one' on a quest literally to save the world. Is that a positive or a negative? I mean, for me one of the biggest frustrations in big-title RPGs is that you're this messiah figure (even if you're roleplaying an *******) and the fate of the universe hinges on everything you do...and it just seems overdone to me. The intended plot for my game has a hero, just not a destined one, and one who is saving those close to him in an imperfect world rather than righting every problem he comes across like Superman.

Then again, the big-title RPGs are making a ton of money, and I figure they have to know what they're doing. So, do you guys like being the 'hero of destiny' in games?

Essentially you're end result, to me, is similar to what Apple gave me. You just focused on the private military part of it to blow up :p. But I'm not married to my original notes, just that I want my evil corporation and some cause and effect on the smaller gatherings of people who cannot afford the luxury. Both of y'all said go a different route, in your own ways. Whether it's military or mercenaries though is neither here nor there for me. Private protection is nothing new in fantasy settings in whatever form it comes in.

My inspiration with the gas company, is ComStar from the BattleTech universe. Except they control interstellar communications, and, have their own military presence.

That said I edited my plot down to it's first 2/3rds....ish? I'll put it in spoilers so it does not make the thread drag out on scrolling. Wouldn't want people on mobile breaking their thumbs! Excuse my poor writing, I'm merely trying to get the idea across. John and Dave are placeholders, I have name's for those characters, and "some" backstory. But some of the other characters I do not have names for. They are character to push the story's needs.

This is pretty much a first draft of my thoughts from while back. You will see how I would like to tie in the gas company. It's a "look at this hand" while my other hand is busy. I do have a full ending for it too. But it's irrelevant to me until I grind out issues with my original thoughts.

Characters of Interest

The Messenger: This is the player’s character. This character has no name, the player will create their own. The Messenger is sent back in time to fix their current present.

John: A playable character that joins The Messengers party first. But leaves before the player meets Dave.

Dave: A playable character that joins The Messengers party second. But then eventually are brought together with John. John and Dave reunite, not having seen each other since the war.

The General: Major NPC.

The Emperor: Major NPC.

The Gas Corporation: A secondary antagonist, the side story to the main story of the Messenger. The Gas Corporation is used to galvanize the relationship between the player, John, and Dave.

Evil Force & The Meta: This is not a fully fleshed out thought. The Evil Force is the primary antagonist that causes some of the monsters to happen in the world. “The Last War” is the war against the Evil Force, the war that John and Dave were apart of, and played their own pivotal moments in.
The Messenger was sent back in time to change the past. The Messenger's present is savaged with conflict after the loss of a long war to an evil military power. But the teleportation to the past came at a cost for The Messenger, it’s a one way trip. The Messenger may never return to their timeline, and will be left to grow old and die in the past.

The teleportation process malfunctions though, and The Messenger gets amnesia. The Messenger cannot remember their purpose and wakes up in an inn, not recalling how he/she got there. This is where the story begins.

The Messenger will run into 2 alternate main characters, John, the aloof military veteran, and Dave, a soldier until the day he dies. These two characters served in the military together, but different units, ranks, and titles. Through battle they became good friends. The Messenger meets them both individually, then all 3 are brought together after a short time. The Messenger goes on a series of adventures to combat The Gas Corporation who have a stranglehold on the planet's natural gas supply.

The General, that John and Dave served under in The Last War. He is a close friend to the Emperor. The two had long been friends since they were children. The Emperor was of royal blood, and The General was of non noble blood, but worked his way through the military's ranks. The General was a master strategist. John and Dave both viewed The General as a father figure. Dave still serves as the General’s right hand. The General is popular among the people, he is a war hero.

An Evil Force from the Meta invades The Generals dream one night. The General is shown an outcome in the future, an outcome where The Emperor, turns mad and has their military begin to slaughter the civilians in the streets. The dream is being manipulated by the evil force, twisting it darker. The dream becomes recurring for the General each night. The General is slowly driven mad, and begins to fall prey to the visions in the dream. He begins having doubts of The Emperor. The General begins plotting a coup against The Emperor, and The General makes a choice that would drive a wedge through the middle of the Empire, as the military and civilians would be forced to take sides. The General executes the coup.

This will cause a divide between John and Dave. John disagrees with The General’s actions, and Dave feels the need to be the loyal soldier to The General. The player will ultimately have to pick a side.

During the adventures against The Gas Corporation, The Messenger slowly regains their memory, and their purpose. But keeps it secret, nobody knows The Messenger is from the future.

The General going mad, is happening in the background while the player party deals with The Gas Corporation. When the adventure is done, the coup begins.
Aside from issues with that section of the plot I posted, something I'm also having trouble with is a female protagonist. Everything in that plot is pretty much male, one way or the other. And that's boring and not balanced. But my creativity pretty much stalls after I have pulled inspiration from some of my favorite games and alternate universes.

I feel like this is the same road block I have hit for any project I have created, I never have the story that guides my project. I have become pretty handy with MV and learned a lot of it's basics at this point. But MV does not help me write. My goal with my current project is as simple as Dragon Quest, but I still lack the story that's driving the player from location to location. And stops me from making the next map, next event, because in reality, I have no real setting, no world, no story.
No sugar and no Kool-aid!

Please continue picking at things. It's got to get refined somehow!

Again thanks in advance. As always.

Edit: Forgot, @Ailius I think after reading your question, make what you want to make. Thoughts have been getting recycled for a long time and will continue to be. I think you're overthinking that part. A player still needs to feel some sort of importance. Especially if it's a fantasy setting with orcs and goblins sort of stuff. The Messiah thing let's the payer disconnect from reality and get more into the fantasy setting of the game. I just would not try to focus on avoiding a stereotype so much. But end of the day just make what's fun for you!

Although I love your awesome tutorials and always want more, I sure hope you're not going to burn yourself out.
Has anyone else ever thought about how the title of Gym Leader is usually hereditary? Usually the gym leaders child or sibling becomes the next gym leader. Not always, but usually. Pokémon nepotism
