What I am trying to do:

When the party leaves the town or other location and enters the world map, all followers disappear and only the party leader is visible.

(Not a problem,  Use 'Change Player Followers' command).

A much smaller sprite than the usual one appears.

(Not a problem, I have an identical set of sprite sheets to the normal ones, with the sprites at the correct size, and I can do a 'Change Actor Graphic' command.)

That works flawlessly when I know who the party leader is.  However, unless I lock the party leader, it could well be another actor.  The player is going to want to see the actor of their choice on the world map.

So how do I identify the party leader and then ensure that it is that actor's sprite which appears?

Thanks.

EDIT

In case it is helpful to know, the ordinary sprites are on a sheet called 'Actors 1-8' and the smaller sprites are on a sprite sheet 'Actors 1-8 Overworld'.  The actors are in the identical position on both sheets.

EDIT AGAIN

I know that once I can identify the party leader I could do loads of conditionals (if party leader = actor(id), change actor graphic to (whatever), but I'm hoping that there is some nifty script call or similar which will save me having to do that, and so reduce the chances of error.

The party leader sprite should always be the one that shows when followers are turned off (or even when followers are turned on). My question is why that's NOT happening for you. Is it because you are forcing a certain sprite on the overworld map?

I have instances in my game where party members are riding horses, or swimming. Here's the way I accomplish it easily, which I THINK may work, if I understand what you're doing correctly ...

Have a common event for every different form - one for normal, one for riding, one for swimming, one for overworld. On the event where they all mount horses, add a Call Common Event which calls the "riding" common event. Where they dismount, call the common event for "normal". In those common events, you change ALL actor sprites - even those that aren't in the party - to be the version where they're riding a horse, swimming, overworld-sized, normal-sized, etc.

In your case, it would simply be the events that transfer the player to/from the overworld maps. One to set the sprites to overworld sized, one to set them back again.

I use a common event (Going Small, Going Big) in the transfer events.  And yes, whoever is the party leader is the one left showing after the Change followers command.  But the Change Actor's Graphic requires me to specify who the actor is before I can specify which graphic to use.

Oh wait a minute - I've been having an airhead moment (a rather sustained one at that).  Of course, if I've done a change graphic command for everyone, then the right one will automatically appear.  Duh.  Okay, maybe I should have gone to sleep a couple of hours ago.

Thanks.

Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.

The development never ends as the developer thinks to be the smart cookie by coming back and beginning by saying... "Oh bother, this indie game has been long overdue..." How could one resist such?
