Setting and Gameplay
To the Underworld and Back Again is a fantasy mystery RPG game made with RPG Maker VX Ace. It involves role-playing as a paladin who solves mysteries in order to save your goddess's son and also to get a bigger picture of what’s going on in a fantasy world. For the IGMC, there’s just going to be one big mystery.
Allard, a half-god has recently passed on. The half-god’s mother is the goddess of the human race, and she isn’t particularly pleased with her son’s death. You, the hero paladin, have been summoned by the great goddess to enter Nerach, the centre of the Underworld, and help resurrect her son from the dead.
There is only one problem with this plan. The Underworld has an ironclad law stating that “The dead should remain dead.” Any successful attempt to revive the dead will result in the Underworld and its god hunting down the lost soul and the lawbreaker (meaning you) to the ends of the earth.
If you fail, you will face the wrath of your goddess. If you succeed, you will face the wrath of the Underworld and its god. Good luck, hero. You’ll need it.
What does your notebook have to do with it? Download and play to find out.
Notebook World mechanic (Important)
Investigation plays a very heavy role in this game.
The amount of notes you find in the main world will affect the amount of options and possibilities you have for making discoveries in the Notebook World.
The amount of discoveries you make in the Notebook World will affect the difficulty level of the last boss. A final Notebook World score of 6 (out of 12) or below will result in an overpowered boss fight. On the other hand, a full score of 12 results in a lot of help for the final boss battle.
The Notes System
In this game, your Notebook is a powerful magical device able to create a realm of its own. Your Notebook Spirit will summon you into the Notebook World the moment it has gathered enough notes to help you out in your current situation. You do not summon the Notebook. The Notebook summons you.
About half of the NPCs will have something important to say and are worth talking to once or twice. They’ll be making random comments about their world, their gods and their history. It is up to you to make notes (The game does it automatically for you) of what they say.
If you miss out on one or two notes in a city, fret not. The game will have a tracker to track the notes you’ve taken to inform you of the total notes available.
What do you do with the notes you gathered? Well, what do you do with puzzle pieces? You assemble them into something larger. At some point of the game, you’ll be stuck and transported to the Notebook World. How do you solve the situation? By looking at your notes and combining them to infer a solution.

Other Notes
This game's sprites and graphics are mostly RTP. The battle system is bare to the bone. To save time, the characters are levelled enough by default and random encounters do not exist. There will only be 4 different battles throughout the game.
