I'm trying to get her into using VX Ace to make her little stories and i think a game to represent it is the best way to sell her into the idea that learning the basics is worth it. The game can't have too much complexity with moves and skill trees and such and it needs high quality art and custom animations, if any.

Suggestions?

P.S.

MODS! I posted the original in the wrong forum but i could not delete it, so i posted this one on what i think is the proper channel.

There was a recent thread about discussing simplicity options in the terms of an older audience, specifically parents. You could read up on that and take some tips, same general concept. (This refers to making simple games)

http://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.php?/topic/18183-simplifying/

On actual basic games that other people have created, there's a Ace game titled Crysalis, you can find it under this site's product section under Ace. (It's free to download/play)  It's pretty simple and uses no custom scripts at all, and it's not encrypted so you can go into the project and see everything first-hand. (Events, database, maps, etc.)

Crysalis is too complex. Each character has a library of TP moves and modes that will frustrate a 10 year old and i want her first experience to be a positive one.

I would argue that I played more complex games at that age and loved them, but then, I was always really big on video games... I don't know how the experience would be for a kid who didn't normally enjoying playing them.

I must have been an odd one then. I played complex games since I was like five or something.

I personally have not played any good RPG Maker games with a such simplistic combat you are seeking for recently. So your bet is probably seek a good visual novel like game without the combat element.

How about that Halloween game with the witch, vampire and ghost?

I can't remember its name...

I made a visual novel when I was trying to figure everything on RMXP out.  There was no gameplay at all, but it was good for getting used to some of the more basic elements.  I'm not suggesting you show your niece something exactly like this, because it wasn't really age-appropriate, but a visual novel might be worth a go, because it's a little easier to grasp.  It doesn't require much in the way of scripts, or getting the hang of battles, or conditional branches, etc, etc.

Just a little curious, does your little niece has any gaming background? That could help us to have an idea of how "simple" has to be the game. Also can help you know how inclined she is to the idea before even trying anything. Any signal of she being uninterested is a fail! Kids are that much of troublesome!

If not, why don't you buy her a book?

She makes little stories on Moviestar Planet, but they are very limited since MSP has a microtransaction thing. She has a Wii with tons of games, but i have never seen her play something like Pokemon, Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest. I found a game here on a banner, A Girl and her Familiar, and it seemed to at least have a very simplistic beginning, plus the main character is a mouthy girl, just like she is :p

I'm trying that to see how she likes it, but any other suggestions are welcome. I guess the game can be complex but later down the road.

It is imperative that they have a slow, simple start until she is comfortable enough to catch up.

I wouldn't give a 10-year-old an RPG with all the bells and whistles of TP-based combat, skills etc. Give her adventure games made in RPG Maker, which don't rely on numbers, but rather story and puzzles.

You Are Not The Hero is a story about a girl who must complete mini-games to save her town. It's light gameplay, really fun, and well-polished. The only drawback is that it's fairly short, since it's a demo.

Pirate Rush is quite noob-friendly, and though it contains battles, it is done in a fairly intuitive manner and holds the player's hand every step of the way. She may enjoy this game since it is friendly to beginners of the genre, and contains minigames like fishing. Again it's a demo, though.

That's called Halloween Flop.
Halloween Flop is a cute and tiny game, but it requires knowledge of TP costs, elemental advantages, types of skills and other RPG tropes. It's actually one of the more complicated battle systems despite its cutesy art style and topic matter. I wouldn't recommend it to a 10-year-old girl due to its complexity and possibly scariness.

Princess Princess is a fairly light-hearted adventure which eases you into gameplay. I don't think she'd be too confused by it, and I think she'd also like the story since it's very cute.

Edit: Legionwood 2, despite its combat system is a very nice story that kids would enjoy and a gameplay and world that they would love. It's also very long, if you're looking for something that's not a demo and can be finished in 10-15 minutes.

The Grumpy Knight, or on that hand, anything by Indrah, has a nice beautiful and cute atmosphere.

Child's Light is a fun, simple mystery game and is especially made for young girls.

It features colorful and children storybook like art and custom music and such.

Back in action to develop the indie game that has been long overdue... Final Fallacy. A game that keeps on giving! The development never ends as the developer thinks to be the smart cookie by coming back and beginning by saying... "Oh bother, this indie game has been long overdue..." How could one resist such? No-one c
