Hello all,

I am 100% new to this process; I downloaded the trial version just yesterday. I have blazed through the tutorial, which helped tremendously, but when I got to the battle creation section, I absolutely loathed the battle style. Luckily, I found that you could change these. Victor Sant has one I adore called Map Turn Battles, a Chrono Trigger style battle, and it is exactly what I want. I even like how much more zoomed in it looks.

Alas, now I feel 100% overwhelmed. I have no idea how to create or trigger a battle on the map like that, and my overhead view is far too zoomed out to look good or in the style I want. I have the scripts copy/pasted properly, but I have no idea where to go from that point. I can make maps until I'm blue in the face, but no clue how to use this script to start making my battles.

I would do nearly ANYTHING for help--even pay for it! I just need some one-on-one love from an expert to a newbie like me. Even something like helping me like the tutorial did--make a small dungeon where I can test and practice the concepts, that way I can start to understand the process and how to script those battle events.

Your help would mean so much to me.

Thank you

Can you please add a link to the script you're using - preferably to the blog article or forum post where it's introduced, as they usually contain screenshots, explanations, and discussion that aren't in the script headers but are still useful.

Usually the instructions for a script are in the comments at the beginning - including instructions how to configure the script.

All action battle scripts are among the most complex to use because they change too much of the original engine in order to allow on-map-battles, and that specifically means that they cannot simply be copied in like with simpler scripts, they always need to be configured - and usually there need to be notetags in the database to tell them what data to use.

That't why it's extremely important to read the instructions given in the script - and why you need not only to give us the link (so that we can read those instructions as well) but also that you tell us what part of the instruction you have already done and what part you didn't understand.

Below is the original post I discovered this on. Post #7, if you reveal the photos, shows screenshots of a beautifully aesthetic world zoomed in (and looks prettier/higher res than the stock program!):

http://www.rpgmakervxace.net/topic/4819-ve-map-turn-battle/

Below is Victor's Scripts, and you can see the youtube "demo."

https://victorscripts.wordpress.com/rpg-maker-vx-ace/battle-scripts/animated-battle/map-turn-battle/

I love this because, 1.) the game looks more zoomed in than the stock RPG maker and 2.) the combat I simply adore. I want to model my world after this, but there's almost no point beginning if I am unable to achieve the zoomed look or the combat.

Further, I know I am still only using the free version (but will definitely buy if can get the above to work), but I also love the graphical quality achieved here:

The free version is the same as the full version - just without the 30 day limit.

True, but doesn't the full version contain many more art assets? Either way, full or lite, my desire is for the high resolution zoomed look found in my first link (the pictures on post 7) and the combat system found in link two.

And please know I am definitely don't want everything handed to me on a silver platter. I have worked hard these last two days playing around with the game, but coding/scripting is foreign to me. I am trying my best, but I could really use a nudge in the right direction by someone who has the time to help :)

No extra content.

The screenshots are using different graphics they imported themselves, many which can be found here.

Trial version = Full Version with 30 day limit

Full Version = No 30 day limit

Lite = No 30 day limit, limited resources and no scripting support inside the editor

I appreciate everyone clarifying the differences between the game types :) however, my main question remains!

I'd really suggest that you familiarize yourself first with the basics of RPG Maker, maybe try to make a simple game first just to get the hang of it than directly dabbling with these more advanced stuff. Implementing these scripts are mostly just following instructions and doing some minor things on your own, which needs grasps of the basics of RPG Maker.

We understand that, but unfortunately you still haven't answered our questions:
What part of the instructions inside the script have you done, and what part did you not understand?

Please give us a screenshot of the event you made to start a battle with the data you wrote inside the comment command (which is neccessary according to the script instructions)

I'm at work, so screenshots will come when I get home :)

In the meantime, can you explain how they achieved the zoom effect and the beautiful art aesthetic? Tutorials for both would be great, even just links to them and how to get them going.

Please remember I am extremely new at this. I have made the tutorial game so I know my way around many of the basic features, but I'm the type who likes to dive head first and absorb as much as possible :) not to mention if my ultimate goal is for the zoomed effect and art aesthetic, may as well start working on small maps for that!

Thank you all again for assisting :D

There are no zoom effects. It's all simply new graphics that they mostly found here on the forums or elsewhere. Go to the VX/ACE Resources sub-forum and you'll find them.

I would do a small, basic game, even if it uses the combat style you hate, so you really get a feel for how to use RPG Maker, long before you dive headfirst into using an action battle script and custom resources.

For the basic game, using the standard resources is fine.   It's more of a "throwaway" project just to get your feet wet.  You will want to at least make minor tweaks to the States, Classes and such to get a feel for how those will work in the game you really want to make.

Diving headlong into your dream project, ESPECIALLY when you're using a completely different battle system that requires extensive configuration, is a fantastic way to get utterly discouraged and completely swamped in the details, emerging out the other side with nothing.

Start simple and small, make that work, THEN start treading out into deeper waters.

I think almost everyone who gets RPG Maker, including myself, did exactly that - jump in headfirst to our Dream Project.  Then get utterly confused and lost with the details.  So I started again with a tiny throwaway game and learned a lot.  When I completed even a tiny game, and made it work, I learned a LOT more.

Where? On your linked post? The only media I saw there was the video by Victor and I can't find anything new there. It's RTP.

Anyway, most aesthetic is probably from using another graphics pack instead of the RTP. Or editing the RTP to look "better". There's no scripted way to make a non-good graphic to be good

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
