Welcome to the 2018 Indie Game Making Contest!

The IGMC is a yearly game making contest that has been held by Degica Games, publisher of RPG Maker MV, OneShot, and many, many more games! The IGMC's main goal has always been to encourage indie designers to finish their games. You have one month to deliver a one hour game, any game you can dream up, for the chance to win massive cash prizes.

Follow us on Twitter @igmc_degica for updates and the Itch.io page for more information about the contest!

This year though, we're shaking it up. Instead of looking for a complete package, we are looking for the next big indie game. We want to work with the winner to turn the contest build of their game, into a full commercial game. We want to help you jump from indie amateur, to indie pro!

So get your engines started, it's time to dev.

    CONTEST RULES
    1. Development on contest entries MUST be started after the beginning of the contest (October 29th, 2018). Commissions for the contest must also be started after the beginning of the contest. Pre-existing assets that were not created specifically for the contest are allowed.
    2. Games MUST be submitted by the deadline (Midnight PST, November, 29th 2018). NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED! Make sure not to submit last minute to avoid missing the deadline.
    3. Games MAY be developed using any engine.
    4. Game Length: Judges will only be required to evaluate a game for 1 HOUR if it passes the screening stage. Any game over 1 hour will be judged only on its first hour.
    5. You must have the right to use all software, resources, and tools involved in the creation of the game. Please make sure to accredit resource creators in a text file included with your game.
    6. There is no limit on the size of the development team. You can have one person or 10+ people. Keep in mind that prize winnings will only be awarded to the user that submits the game.
    7. Contest participants can be involved in UP TO TWO submissions. This means you could work on a solo project and collaborate with another team, collaborate on two teams, or even submit two solo projects. If a team uses your resources, but you were not directly involved in the development of the game, then it won't count towards the TWO game limit; same with commissions.
    8. All files required to play the game MUST be included in the download. This include RTP resources. If the game exe does not run because of missing files, it will be disqualified.
    9. No 18+ Content: This includes strong sexual themes and content, graphic nudity, or extreme portrayals of violence. If you're unsure, please follow ESRB guidelines: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entertainment_Software_Rating_Board
    10. Plagiarism and any other forms of CHEATING are grounds for disqualification. Let's make this a clean and fair competition for everyone!
    11. Games must be available in English, but you are welcome to include other translations (just make sure the default language is set to English).
    12. Your game submission must be able to run on Windows 7 and higher. You can include additional downloads for other platforms, but only the Windows version will be judged.
    13. Contest Judges have the right to penalize or disqualify a submission for reasons including, but not limited to, the violation of the above rules. Judges decisions are final.
    PRIZE CONDITIONS & LEGAL
Prizes will be delivered electronically via the email associated with the user who submitted the game. Winners will be responsible for all taxes and fees associated with their prize package. If working on a team, please discuss how prize winnings will be split before winners are announced to avoid potential legal issues. The IGMC team is not responsible for splitting prize money.

No purchase necessary to participate in the contest. Must be at least 13 years of age to register and submit entries. Additional restrictions on age and nationality are subject to the contestant's local, state, and/or national laws.

Creators retain all rights to their respective works. The contest runners (Degica) reserve the right to promote the game on the appropriate websites, blogs, social media, etc. as outlined in the prize packages.

Degica reserves first publishing rights for games that win Degica’s Choice, People’s Choice, and/or YouTuber’s Choice.

    JUDGING CRITERIA

This year, we're looking to find the next big Indie Game. That means that we aren't focusing on complete, polished games. That doesn't mean you want to turn in something that is a mess of bugs, but it does mean that we want to see games that have plenty of room for expanding into full games. Because of this, we are judging all entries on the four following criteria, rated on a scale of 1-20.

    Gameplay
The gameplay includes any part of the game that the player can interact with that gives feedback in the form of meaningfully different reactions from the game. This includes both the mechanisms used and their execution. You want a game that people want to play as much as they want to experience!

    Presentation
The presentation of the game includes quality of the visual art, music, and sound effects used in the game, as well as how well they are used to convey the story and/or gameplay to the player. You want good writing, good music, and good art!

    Engagement
The engagement of the game measures how well the game draws the judge in. How much the game makes the judge want to play more or experience more of the game. This can be due to a “fun factor” or some other method of hooking players in. You want to have a solid hook that keeps the players playing!

    Potential
The potential of the game represents not what is in the game, but it’s potential for expanding into a full game. How would this game fare in the commercial landscape with additional material and polish? You want to make sure your game has somewhere to grow!

    Bugs!
Since we aren't looking for completely finished and polished games, we expect the games to have some level of bugs and glitches. Bugs are hard to eliminate! As such, any bug that is not game ending will not result in a penalty to your score. A bug that makes the game unplayable in the first 10 minutes of gameplay will result in disqualification. A bug after the first 10 minutes will have to be judged solely on the merits of what the judge was able to play, with a -5 penalty to overall score.

Additionally, to reflect that these are games that are meant to be expanded and further polished, your highest score among Gameplay, Presentation, Engagement, and Potential will be doubled when added together for your final score.

Question. Months ago I tried to make a mechanic that was super complicated and failed. If I start over from scratch but its still the same idea, can I use it in this?

@Appropriate 2018 Indie Game Making Staff Member.

A concerned question relating to the allowed contest entries.

I released a game about a year ago that had the concept of people travelling worlds to save there own world from attacks from monsters. It was a very short game, but became about a total of 2 hours long in length.

I wasn't very well mentally at the time I made it, so it could've been improved upon a lot. If I were to make a completely new game, yet have a very similar plot concept, but otherwise different ideas, and mostly different fictional characters, would that count as an acceptable entry? The original game was made on RPG Maker VX Ace, while this time I would make a game in RPG Maker MV, so a different game engine too. Basically, I want to use new characters with this game and new ideas for almost everything, but perhaps keep a few similar ideas while still changing them. On a new engine, without copying anything else over. Is that allowed?

Please could someone respond to me here about this? Thanks. Much appreciated.

The idea that I was planning to pursue for this year's IGMC is pretty much the exact opposite of what you're looking for. Lol! Not sure if I'll be able to come up with something new on such short notice that's good enough to compete but I'll see what I can do.

If we've written notes for a game but haven't actually started putting it together, would it still qualify as an entry?

Im sure thats fine. Everyone's thinking of ideas and such before it starts. It'd be impossible to go into a new project with a blank mind knowing before hand you wanted to make something. I think the rules apply to things like using the maker itself, making maps, music, art, sprites, scripts and coding etc

That sounds fine. As long as you are mostly just using the idea and not the materials/coding/etc. I don't see how it could be an issue.

    100% Ok.

Question about MogHunter's Chrono Engine. I'd like to use his ABS system for this contest but trying to put his plugins into a new project is impossibly buggy. Are we able to use the demo he provided to start our project as long as we don't use anything from the demo, like the skills he made, HUD art, items, animations, etc? Its purely for how the plugins are put into the maker.

@Touchfuzzy Yes, it's mainly a few similar ideas with different characters, events, graphics, database and coding. Thank you for the response and answers. I've decided I will enter the contest and try to make a game.

Why isn't this on the banner of the home page? I had no idea it even existed until somebody else told me about it.

For my current game, instead of creating plugins I modified the existing JS files. Most of the game is done through scripts and common events, with very few map events on it. I want to make a completely different kind of game for the IGMC, can I copy/paste my existing project, delete all maps and database and then work on that?
