I'm still a bit unsure as to what content is allowed and what's not allowed, and to what extent. I'll give a few examples (in a spoiler) and maybe someone can help me out. I just don't want to spend a lot of time making something that gets disqualified over borderline content.

1) A weapon that is a stick covered in sh*t. It's called a Sh*t Stick. Does it count as one swear word or every time it pops up in the game or every single time a player goes into their inventory and sees it?
2) Heads on stakes. Not gory heads or anything, but heads. On stakes. Is the very idea too much, or does it depend on whether there's blood or not?
3) Squicky plot points. Every played Silent Hill 2? Would a character like Angela push the game into 18+ territory, even if it's all dialogue?

So after reading the rules myself, i would assume that your Sh*tstick would belong to the 18+ category.
But that doesn't mean you cant't use it.
You could simply rename it "poo on a stick" or something that is child friendly.

And in most situations, you can completely re write a script to suit all audiences. Just simple change the wording to give the same imaginative process, but with a less adult theme. Does that make sense?

Would a monster village being destroyed count as 18+? Considering so many rpg start when the hero's town is destroyed, I would assume it's ok? Perhaps just don't include bones or blood everywhere?

The 18+ rule is really mostly there to avoid people submitting gorefests and/or porn games. As long as you aren't falling into those two categories you are probably fine.

I can already see that alot of people are going to be asking questions on the ratings and such.

If you're all unsure about what is classified as 18+, take a look at some games that are currently 15 rated or 18 rated and have a look at the differences between the two.

This link is also the rating system that america uses for their films and tv shows, which is pretty much standard in most countries. It's quite a long read, but if you scroll down far enough there are details and examples of things that would make a 15+ in to an 18+ and examples of how to still portray an 18+ story in a 15+ way.

I don't think heads on pikes is re-writable, exactly. It's either text, a non-gore version or a gory version. Or it's just not in there. And maybe it doesn't have to be, but I think really I'd rather let the story dictate what happens than try to force the direction to go somewhere else instead.

And the MPAA rating is actually more confusing than the ESRB rating - there's less of an indication as to what separates one rating from the next. (The ESRB is confusing bc it talks about degrees - how much bad language or suggestive situations tips a T rating into an M rating, they don't say, but at least you know it has to do with those things. The MPAA rating is so vague as to be almost useless. Worse still is the way the ratings are assigned, but that's a whole other can o' worms.)

I think I'll just have to do my best to come up with a storyline that won't have too much objectionable content (or at least, the type that would get it a higher rating). The idea that I had is probably just going to be too adult, even tho there's no blood/gore, nudity or the like.

I almost want to make a deep, moving game where the reason for there being that stick is so touching and perfect that you have to grudgingly admit it could not be any other way.

But I'm already working on two games, and since I can't actually call it what I want, that idea will have to wait. LOL

SOOOOO TEMPTED to bust out rpg maker mv and work on an original rpg game but idk... Chances are people are gonna be into action games and my game will fall by the wayside due to it being an rpg...

Before anyone gets any crazy ideas, please look at rule #5. This means if you submit a fan game of any sorts that uses art or music from the original game, it is DQ'd. So no Pokeman fan games for the contest, unless you can prove you got permission from Nintendo to use their IP.
