I'm sure most people creating video games or worlds grab inspiration from everywhere. Sometimes, if you can't create a race or monster on your own, you use popular ones: slimes, dragons, zombies, and etc. Most of these come straight from legends, fables, and myths. They are public domain.
Lately, I've been noticing some inspiration other game developers use. And it's lead me to wonder about "copyright" or what's safe to "use" or "base off".
Square Enix's FINAL FANTASY series has a few of these.
What do you take of all this?

Square Enix's FINAL FANTASY series has a few of these.
- The Coeurl is a recurring enemy that often appears like a large cat who can petrify party members. Coeurls first appear in a science fiction novel by A.E. van Vogt. Considering that a group of Japanese developers didn't ask Mr. Vogt if they could use Coeurls in their games, how were they able to take his idea and place it into a now popular series?
- The same goes for the Mindflayer - first found in Dungeons & Dragons. Are D&D creatures available to use in the public?

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
