Invention Destruction
Current version of the game Prologue v1

The elevator pitch for my RPG is Sword Art Online meets .hack with a dash Visual Novel. A socially disordered teen with paranoia. He is shut off from the rest of the world including his family, friends and work. His only respite in a world where he feels like he doesn't belong is a VR world and an MMO called Innocent Sin Online. Here our protagonist can actually hold conversations, relationships and excel at anything he wants to do. What happens when the world you want to run away from encroaches on the world you escape to? What happens when the world you escape to starts to change and deform to a mystery that you must solve. Do you even solve it?

The main character's name, for now, is Brad. Yes, I took my own name. I took it as a place holder, but the more and more I created my world I realized I put in a lot of my own insecurities and issues. Yea... I am kind of putting my self out there with this game. The story takes some really deep personal cues from my life. The basic story arc doesn't get fully laid out in the Prologue, which is what I want to work on, but you get a serious idea.

-Lot's of Custom Scripting

-Custom Sprites

-Awesome music (At least I think so)

-Trying to stay away from the RTP Data except for some sound effects. (Not that RTP is bad)

I am hoping for the game to be a blend of inspirations. I don't expect it to win awards necessarily, though I wouldn't be apposed to that, but I want to create a game that has an interesting story. Something I will be proud to have made. I am trying to go for that classic JRPG feel of games with side view battles and some inspiration. It will have a decent cast of character's, a story that I hope could span two titles with mysteries to solve.

Current Theme Song:

Noapusa - Tokitsuki Mio

The game, in its current state is in an extremely Alpha. I just want to get the community's opinion mostly. See if you guys like the look of the game. The maps that are set up aren't in a final state but will be used in the final game. They've already changed around a bit internally and will probably change around some more. This way though you can kind of get a feel for the game, some dialogue and the world around you. I think the game is currently in a very short prologue state. For the story and the feel of the game though I don't know how to extend the prologue without making it feel like padding. I want the Prologue to end before the Virtual World as a sort of chapter break.

Any advice, notes or constructive criticism you have for me is all welcome. Just remember that this is still a very alpha state. If you see any error's with text, graphics, sounds or error's feel free to let me know. If you have any suggestions for any Art Asset's that would be great. I have several of the Paid content packs but I am always looking for Freely available Commercial Use assets. Tips on how to fill the maps would be great. I think I can make some fairly cool looking maps (a later section I just made) however, it feels like something is still lacking. When I look at other more experienced developers maps it feels meaty and quality. It could potentially be the tile sets I am using? However I paid money for them so their quality isn't necessarily in question but rather my ability to use them properly? I would also love to figure out some cool shading and lighting effects. I am also perpetually on the hunt for Modern / Sci-Fi / Gaming icons, tile's, generator parts etc etc etc.

I have probably read through hundred's if not over a thousand replies to threads trying to find as much as I possibly can that can fit a Commercially Viable game. I am still unsure If I want to sell what ever becomes of this project, but I want to work in those limitations because I want Game Development to potentially be a real source of income. Though I do need to make that Power Ranger RPG I've been planning for years... xD

Press F1 in game to change the various different controls and options. Also, F6 controls the scaling of the game and F5 controls the full screen of the game. There is a custom advanced script to allow for the game window to scale in a nice and proper way and still look pretty good, so give those options a try if the game window is too small. It should also help remedy any resolution changes or stretching that could occur with going full screen.

”Issues”

I know that some of my scale is off for buildings. Some of the later parts that you can't see are scaled a bit better... but those Hallways for example in the building are a bit too wide. In a future update they will be a tad smaller.

I like the visuals you have. They really help give the game a unique look.

Haven't had a chance to try the demo though (quite busy recently :/).

I think the prologue plays like a prologue should, it sets things up and gets you to the meat pretty fast. The only complaint I have is the phone call from the sister at the end has a couple of cliched lines and forced talking points. I'd tackle this a bit by answering a couple questions in your head: How often does she call? What is the relationship between the two? Are they close? If they talk often how often has getting help come up? What did the Dad do to this kid to make him so hateful?

We don't need to know the answers, but the more questions you can answer about the relationship between the two characters the more convincing the dialogue is going to be. Your goal shouldn't be "explain why he isn't doing x" it should be "show what the relationship is between him and the rest of his family." And to a degree you keep to that goal, but you seem to lose focus midway through.

I do however really like the portrayal of fear from the hero. It's very obvious he has a phobia, and how much that has affected his life.

The phone call I did add in after I technically finished the Prologue, so that might have something to do with the feeling of it. I knew I wanted something there, but not exactly what and I thought his sister fit in that roll.

Thank you both for that feedback. I have been having... trouble trying to figure out how to move on with my game. You two and a few others words of encourgment is really nice to hear.

The visuals and audio are something that I am working very hard at. Trying to get it to match up is seriously difficult. More so than I thought it would be. xD

Well good luck! What you have so far looks really interesting, if you are looking at trying to break through writer's block, what I've found helps me is asking questions. It helps solidify the project in your mind and gives you ideas for what you can do.

Writing is certainly very hard but my biggest issue right now is more graphical. I just simply do not have what I need. Buying assets and finding assets is great and all, but its like trying to put together 5 puzzles and still make a good picture out of it. xD I'm trying to stick to the DS+ tilesets as it's base is a lot stronger, but there are pieces from other sets and things I find that are awesome. I might just need to start making new custom stuff.

Are you using VX Lite? 'cause I know you can have more tabs in the full version.

If you are using Lite I totally know what you mean, it's hellish trying to find five tabs that give you everything you need. What I did, which worked, was I edited up a new tab using a combination of Gimp and MS Paint. It was frustrating, but I managed to put all the resources I needed onto one tab. (And believe me, it is frustrating, especially when you realize how exactly lined up everything has to be.)

No im using the Full program. I can have lots of of tilesets that I can set per map, but you're still limited with A1-5, D-E.

With what I have purchased and found there just isn't a lot specifically to what I need, which I did expect. It's just trying to get everything to play well together. Celianna's tileset doesn't match with the DS+ Tilesets for example. My character's, the one's I am using from DS+ match, but other's that I am finding / making don't fit. Look at the girl outside of your apartment building. She doesn't quite... fit. So... ultimatley I think I am sticking with DS+ because it has the most natural diversity of all the tilesets and each section works together well (I bought both packs on Steam). I just either need to find assets that others put up (commercialy) that match DS+ or just create my own characters by hand. Take the base template, which I need to find a DS+ one, and build modern on top of that.

When you are in the MMO I can more easily use the tilesets and characters that came with the packs. The MMO spans a few different type of styles. Like Sengogku and Regular(?). They can mix well enough together too. It's also tough to try and find parts diverse enough so that it doesn't feel like I am using the same 5 or 6 sprites for the generic NPC's, which I will more than likely need to do starting off.

Anyone with Modern / Sci-Fi DS+ assets willing to share? xD Grandma Deb has been an invaluable resource when scouring for assets. It just doesn't seem a lot of people like DS+?

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
