I usually don't, because when I create a new map (even if it is the humblest dungeon in my game), I always have something in mind.

But that's not a general rule, I think it is ok to have some anonymous dungeons in a game, so generated dungeons would do. Everything depends on your tastes and needs.

If you're new to mapping, they can be something of a help at the beginning, but you need to start editing them from the get go to make them more your own.  Only you know the details of your game and what will fit, the program's generator does not.  Also, editing will help you learn how the tiles work, how to do efficient, effective layouts, that sort of thing.  I wouldn't recommend staying with them too long, as they are quite limited in many ways.

You generate a big dungeon then tweak it to make it pretty.

It depends of course.

I would use it if I had to make a huge dungeon map.

I personally dislike auto generated dungeons a lot.
These can actually really easy distract me in interrest of a game. :/

I prefer a bad own designed dungeon of a auto generated one. ;)
They are mostly repetitive and boring. You can clearly see the pattern in it. :D

But it's a good way to get a look, how to make walls and objects look good in maps.
So for training it is totally okay. :D (\s/)

I love them! I start out with them for a general random layout and then start breaking down rooms and changing the connections so its more random.

That's a good way to do it, but if you look at steam workshop, they mostly only use them in original and don't even put some objects in these. :/ (\s/)

Try it for yourself and see!

In general I think they come out better than expected but not nearly good enough to actually use in a quality game.  Better to look at the "perspective" (size and position of walls, floors, etc.) that Dungeon Generator gives you, learn from it, and make your own (better) maps using that same perspective.

That's what I tried to say. :D

I actually only looked on them and then created my own, that looked similar, but still different in my own style. :D (\s/)

I wonder (just out of pure curiosity) if someone could remake the "Generate Dungeon" function as a separate application to include additional functionality, such as dynamic size, greater randomization of paths, additional decorations, and the like.

As it is, it works best as a demo for building your own rooms, and not much else :\

It only work on the default 17x13 size, so you cannot make bigger rooms with it, and the rooms are very simple. Not exactly interesting game design in the least-bit.

I don't like them, issue is, when you generate, you have a 50x50 map, the rooms are very square, and generally small caves.

They are good (like others have said) if you are beginning to get a feel, but they are very basic, and so unpersonalized to the game!

I have used one before but felt that I needed to edit it to much for my game. It could have worked if I needed something big and then could edit it as I needed.

Only use one if your putting a maze room into your dungeon. They can be a good start to a maze

Although, personally... I think it should only be a maze for a tutorial or in the first 10 minuets of the game or something. I personally don't use them, as they make the dungeon look very cookie cutter. plus, the maze will have more heart if you do it yourself

Well, they can be useful, that much is true, you can use them as inspiration for you dungeon. However i feel like they're not as good as they could be, you can really make some great looking dungeons with the rpg maker VX Ace and the dungeon generator doesn't do it as good as a person does.

But hey, if you're new to mapping you can use it as a guide.

I know! use it story wise as someone who wanted to make some tricked out dungeon to stop the hero but failed miserably! could make for a funny moment in a game as long as the dungeon wasn't too big, yet was big enough

I've scanned the responses, so here's my input, which might be restating things already said.

The generator, imo, can make a good start. I have found when I've used it, that I need to make a bigger map than what I really want. It tends to put a lot of solid wall space all around, and not so much cave/room space. And as others mentioned, I usually then take the base and begin tweaking the room sizes/connections/layouts to make them better suited.

However, I'm one to get caught up in worrying about is each tiny space right, so if I tried to make mine from the start I would spend days on a 10 x 10 section, fretting whether it is "right" or not. So using it as a base start really helps me.

I usually start with one, then build from there. I don't think the dungeons are all that great for use in the game, but they've almost always been closer than paint bucket-ing a room with my chosen wall tile.

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
