But the topic isn't whether some people want mouse movement or not; it's whether it's important. Shaz cites a portal where its users want mouse support, which is fine, but why? Why do the users want this? And do they actually use it? And how does it improve the game over WASD/Arrow key movement? And is it as great in every game, or is it better in some games? And if so, what is it that makes a difference?

I feel that just shutting down the whole discussion because you've got a lot of players who say they like mouse movement is disingenuous; it's not what the topic is about. The topic is whether mouse movement is important or not in RM RPG's (or perhaps this style of RPG's in general), and if so, why? There's a lot left to discuss here that can be beneficial to all of us. Answers to the questions above would be of great value to me, for example, because for my part and the people I've had playtest my game, mouse movement was never brought to the table. And the people who played it are PC centric gamers who are used to using their mouse for most of their gaming.

RMMV
In that case, if you're trying to distribute through a portal that requires mouse control, then yes, mouse control is important. Maybe not to playing the game, but to getting the game accepted on that portal. Who knows WHY customers of that portal prefer mouse control? It's probably because all the other games they play, from the same portal, use mouse control - even though they're different types of games. They may just be used to playing games with the mouse and don't like having to use the keyboard instead (as simple as a behaviour/routine they are uncomfortable about changing).

If the question is "do you NEED mouse support?" then the answer would be a definite NO. It's already proven that you can play the game without the mouse, as there IS no mouse functionality built in by default (unless you've added something to the game that can ONLY be done with the mouse).

But if the question is "should you PROVIDE mouse support?" then it comes back to the audience, and whether they will find it more or less difficult to play with the keyboard or the mouse. And to the game itself, and whether there are any parts that will be more or less difficult to play with the keyboard or the mouse.

And that question can only be answered on a per-game basis. There is no single answer that covers all games. :)

I've found that when rpgmaker games incorporate mouse movement, I prefer the keyboard option anyway. I'd say it's not very important, unless the game portal is requiring it.

At the game-only level, it's NOT important... in the marketing level, it MIGHT be important... since that will possibly bring up a larger market...

It's not a question of "possibly" bringing up a larger market.  It does bring up a larger market.  Therefore at the marketing level it is not that it might be important.  It is important.

If you are selling your game and want to reach a wide audience, there is no choice, imo.  You have to include a mouse.

If you are not selling your game then you do have a choice.

Simple as that, really.

Agree, simple as that. If you don't understand why a portal requires it, and whether or not they will accept a game without it, all you can do is just ask. They have the final say, if you want your game on their site.

Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
