Incorporating 3D into RPG Makers that are not designed for 3D, as it stands, requires you to consider three things
1. Who will maintain the engine. Writing good code that is optimized for 3D environments is not easy. Sure, "I imagine it would be basically like that other software" sounds pretty easy doesn't it?
2. Who will supply the graphics. Depending on what kind of game you're making, you may or may not need custom graphics. For example, if all you need is to be able to use a 2D sprite in a 3D world because you want to take advantage of the fact that it's a 3D world, you could just use 2D sprites. Nothing wrong with that. It's been done before, and it's been done well.
3. How will you be maintaining your game. 2D editor isn't going to help, so you're going to need 3rd party tools.
There are plenty of reasons why I would like 3D to be implemented in RPG Maker, but I don't really see that happening unless someone actually takes on that project.
