First of all I want to apologize for the informal tone I'll be using when asking this, but umm I'm new to RPG Maker (I just bought VX Ace) and I wanted to ask what the capabilities are. From what I've inspected for myself (as well as some mog hunter scripts I've encountered) the engine seems pretty powerful. I typically use unity, and occasionally game maker, but I've became attracted to VX ace, due to it's convenience for those who wish to primarily create role playing games.

Okay yea anyway, my question, VX Ace, does it have the capability (without utilizing .dll files) to harness vector graphics, and if so what are the limits? Also, I'd like to know, since there are so many amazing scripters here, has anyone made a beat em' up style battle system? I'm not really talking about "ABS" as I've seem labeled, I mean more like Streets of Rage, and other games in the beat em' up genre, or something like the tales series, BUT, my question isn't if this is possible, but if the program would allow for action packed high speed intense combo based input, with countering, blocking, and parrys.

I apologize if this is all very basic information, I'm not quite used to the program yet, but I am trying to learn, also I apologize if this isn't where I'm supposed to post this, I am assuming Program and Utility would include engine capabilities and the such!

D: Hope everyone is having a nice day, and I look forward to learning more and more about rpg maker vx ace!

The resolution is 544x416 and can be easily changed to 640x480Pixels.

I supose that could be too less for detailed vector grafics. But take a look at the High Fantasy Pack, it has Diablo1 like Chars

which are not made Pixeled but made in a 3D Editor as far as i know. Safed as .PNG Grafic

The Devs are also working on a High Resolution DLC for this or maybe the next RPG Maker(No much Infos out yet).

ABS or beat em Up are nothing for starters or normal users, this goes to the Limit of the Engine and needs very Good Ruby Scripting knowledge.

Possible yes, Performance should be no Problem. This Engine does not have inbuild advanced Physics or Pathfinding like in Construct2 or other Engines.

Also no Ragdolls. But for Pixelgames its realy nice and straightforward.

My English aint the best, so i hope i could help.

RM doesn't have any vector support.  You could use vector graphics, but they would have to be rasterized first.  This means you can't have a puppet that could be changed dynamically, it all has to be rendered before hand into frames.

I'm not a programmer in any way so I'm not sure about the beat-em-up question.  I haven't heard anything about dropped inputs or anything though, and people have made ABS's and DDR styled games which would have a lot of inputs at a good speed.

Edit:  Oh, yeah, this is in the wrong place.  Let's fix that so you get the answers you need.  I've moved this thread to Support - RPG Maker VX Ace. Please be sure to post your threads in the correct forum next time. Thank you.

Well after looking around, some of the pixel art I've seen here is amazing, I may wait for the high rez dlc though because that interests me a lot but the current res isn't that much of an issue anyway!

yea that makes sense, and thank you for moving my topic! <3

If you mean something like this with "Beat em up", then yes it's possible as a minigame (can't see it done on-map):

Thank you for this link, its really helpful, infact with a bit of tweaking I'm sure I could change this into a tales of clone, and use that as an starting point! Do you know if its possible to change the button commands, because I'd rather X and Esc not be considered the same button.

The PLAYER can change the default button assignments by pressing F1 in the game.

For you as the developer that is NOT as easy, because you'll need to rewrite the key handling scripts. And even then it might cause problems if you don't check for country-dependend keyboard mappings.

I am still a bit interested, but I only know the qwerty layout, so unless I had advisors it would probably be a bit unrealistic D:

Thank you for all the information!! I'll make this thread as solved! Thanks again for all your help!

Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
