Is there a way to expand a game with DLC?

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask such a question, I just need to know

I've been working on my game, and I've been thinking as a treat to the fans to later on release an "expansion"

that lets you play a different story. But it is supposed to be integrated into the full game, not released as a seperate game.

Is there some way I could make this work? I wouldn't be too surprised if this would be impossible or too hard of a task to do, but I have some hope.

You don't plan on charging for the DLC, you can just add stuff to the game and update it.


If you want to have the DLC as "separate files", there are several different ways it can be achieved, but I don't think any of them is simple.


My game is fully compatible with DLCs, but I developed it with that in mind from the beginning.

What I would do is have an installer that overwrites your game's content. The players would lose their original game, as it'd be overwritten...but it seems like the easiest way to do it.

If you want just a single expansion pack, that shouldn't be too hard in this way, but if you want different expansions that keep overwriting the game it's not possible to do it in this way. 

If it's just adding new maps and characters, then your task is easy.

There is a patch script available on the master script list, that can be used for additions to a game. But those still require manual download and copy, it's not automatic.
