Is there a way to make the menu only show the text options ("Item, Save, etc.") but not the party members?

And how would you fill up the rest of the screen?
I don't recall a default option to hide the list of heroes at all. I guess only a plug-in written in C or C++ could help you with it...

The presence of party-window is needed to navigate when you choose skills, equipment, status, row or formation (so I guess you have already excluded all of those from the list, right?).

Also, members would still show up in inventory when you have directly in-menu usable items targeting actors in your game and then there would be no reason to hide their status in mainscreen.

To just disable the menu like you did is a way, but if you still need it, a patch could be created for this.
