Removing the gem would be rather weird given the name. Carbuncle has a very interesting meaning in the sense of the gem. (I am not so much interesting in the medical aspect)

It is a very deep red, and has been thought to shine in the dark like a lighted coal, but this is known to be otherwise. It is said to be as hard as a Sapphire, and to be found naturally of an angular figure; however, as it is very uncommon, there needs no more to be said about it.
It's rather the very fox-like interpretation that I would be concerned about.
