Okay, So I've been using this thing about a weekish now.

My first game started as this... (https://www.dropbox.com/s/4n1oz2ax7x4ze74/Map001.png?dl=0)

I have since moved on with another project that is chugging along, and much smaller in scope.

However, I DO want to create an Epic, open world experience.

Go back to Fantasy (Current project is modern, and not really serious, lots of joking) and perfect this big ass world you can run through and make a life in.

There's a whole lot of stuff I know that I CAN do in my dream game with Ace, and a few things I'm still not sure on.

However, I really would love to get a little feedback on this map.

It currently has 65 locations, but I planned to add about 30ish more. Bring it up around 100 even.

The map is 350x450, and not all is land, as you can see. The roads are kinda upsetting me, but there's not much to do other than re-design the landmass with more ridges and mountains, so the roads would be more bendy and fluid.

I really like the map though, the rivers...and the huge maze in the southeastern part of the continent.

Let me know what you think, if there's any tips. If you think I could pull it off, or if you think that's just WAY too big for a world map.

Everything I learn is going right into new projects, fixing bugs, and improving the gameplay experience.

Also, I thought this was the best forum for this thread, since the size of the world is an actual gameplay feature. As well, if it's too big, it could be game-breaking... So if this post should be moved, I apologize in advance.

Also, I have named each one of these locations so far, know what will be there, and the rough feel I'm going for in that town. Some towns are ports, some are mines, some are lumber yards.

So hopefully you can take that all into account and let me know what you think. This of course isn't a final version of the map, it's just the first fully filled in one. There is currently nothing else in this project but the map and the default assets.

If you were shooting for an open world game, I think it would be a better idea not to have an overworld map. The idea of an open world game is to experience the setting from the ground level, after all, and an overworld view like this is more of a bird's eye view than ground level.

I don't like it.

It's unnecessarily big, the roads are very even and straight,

the map is very bland. It's just like this:

Road

Grass

Tree

and it does that for about 200blocks, then the Trees turn into Hills, then back into trees.

Like add some variety in to the trees. Make mini lakes, make bigger lakes. Make the roads less curvy. If it doesn't need to be that big, make it smaller.

Add those big single trees. Add mountains, mountain ranges, big mountains. Snow, Desert something.

All I see is straight roads, plain grass, same trees and Empty space.

Game Mechanics Design is for looking at general principles, systems, approaches etc.  It is not for looking at a specific, individual project.

You have a couple of choices of where to put this, so I'm not going to move it, though I will be closing it.

You could put something in the Features Feedback thread

If you have enough material, you could open an Early Project thread - though it sounds like this is not far enough on for that.  Still, you may have other stuff on this project which you haven't mentioned here.

You could put your map in Game and Map Screenshots which is specifically for getting feedback on maps.  Generally speaking it is better to link your map in such a way that it can be seen just by clicking on it.  When I clicked on it, it looked like I'd have to download it.  As many people have limits on how much they can download, or (like me) don't want to clutter up their HD more than is necessary, you are going to restrict the number of people who will look at it.  Having said that, it looks as if you have had valuable feedback already, so you might want to revise your map in the light of that before posting again.

I am, therefore, closing this thread.

Our latest feature is an interview with... me?!

People4_2 (Capelet off and on) added!

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
