Item based magic skills

I've noticed that in some games magic skills are sometimes based on having a specific item (eg. Wielding the thunder blade gives the actor the lightening slash skill) or how magic is entirely item based(eg. The djinn of the golden sun series)

Has anyone here created a system like this or is there a way to do it within the RPG maker system?

simple if you make it equip-based

Any equipment can add skills to the actor when equipped, so just don't gice magic to the class but create objects to be equipped that grant the skills.

Alternatively you can add plugins or scripts for skill requirements, that is a bit more complex but will allow for other options like items in inventory giving skills.

When in doubt, try a Common Event

You should be able to make a Common Event that checks if Character A has Weapon X equipped and grants Skill Y if they do. Might be a bit complicated to trigger, but you can always Parallel Process it if you aren't running too many Events in the background or you can even call it before the start of battle if you can combat encounters triggered by Events instead of the default Random Battle System.

You can also make a skill that requires a certain item to be in the inventory to use. I think you can even decide if the skill consumes the item or if it just checks that the player has at least one. Obviously, if the player does not meet the condition then the skill can be greyed out or have a "fail" condition where the player tries to use it and nothing happens.

The actual implementation will likely depend on how the rest of your game is built.

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
