The position "Japanese video games suck" is blatant jingoism, colloquially speaking, and is hardly worth addressing. Whether the Japanese gaming industry has become comparatively stagnant is open for some more debate, though I think that's more relevant to the individual company, if not the individual series or title. Insofar as I'm concerned, Japanese games are the name in fighting games right now, and have had plenty of recent successes in the RPG market. Was FF12 and FF13 good? I personally don't think so, but I don't have many kind things to say about Two Worlds or Dragon Age 2, either. Generalizations can rarely withstand even a token deconstruction, and Phil Fish's words are more inflammatory than insightful.

I specified that I was being colloquial, and used the word as it is often used in the vernacular. Correctly, at that. "Japanese games suck" is a country-wide generalization with the implication that another nation (America) or region (the west) makes better video games. Hence, jingoist. Not a severe or even particularly telling case by any means; Fish probably doesn't carry this ideology into any other facet of his life, but a generally sensible man is still capable of making baseless generalizations.

SO ANYWAY.

A few months before Metal Gear Rising's release(maybe it was back in November 2012), Hideo Kojima had an interview and

answered a question about how Japanese games can be successful everywhere else around the world. I think he said something about games having a plot, theme, or story that everyone can understand should be direction that the Japanese game industry should take.

I totally agree with Kojima, seeing that many Japanese titles(today) just don't catch on to the Western consumer compared to Skyrim

or Dead Space.

also why is phil fish have to sound like a dick in his opinion? maybe that's why he's indie lol

RMMV
Japan in particular finds more strategic, numerical-based games to be highly enjoyable, where Westerners usually like faster-paced games that employ motor skills over logic.
Disagreeable, there is, and still is quite a lot of strategic, numerical-based games developed by US and Eastern-European developers to this day as there was 10-12 years ago. Sure, the casual market says otherwise in the West, but there's still quite enough gamers here that do prefer games that are strategic.

Why do you think it took a good 12-10 years for RPGs to even become remotely popular in the U.S.?
Depends where you're looking (and sales), but there were quite a lot of RPG's that were incredibly popular in the United States in the early 90's.

Considering the first RPGs were made in the 70's, that's still quite a bit of time until they became popular.

Western RPGs got their start in the late 70s and early 80s, and were developed on the few available types of computers during the time.

Again, depends on where you're looking at. Pen and paper Roleplaying Games dominated in the 70's and 80's. Whereas, Computer Roleplaying Games such as Might and Magic, Ultima, and Wizardry (to name a few) were starting to define the cRPG market - and these games were very successful enough for the developers to continue producing sequels. It wasn't until the late 80's/early 90's where cRPG's really became popular while the the tabletop industry started to decline in the 90's. Either way, RPG's in the west have always been popular, whether it was playing with friends around a table or booting up a computer and playing it by yourself.
