"The story of a young thief trying to fight for what's right" 

Intro

News have been floating around the king deciding on going on war against the neighboring nations. Estella decides that she doesn't want to see anyone go through what she went and decides to all she can to prevent this war from happening.

 

Gameplay

In the game you play as young thief named Estella who'll make use of her skills in order to fool your enemies and acquire the most precious loots. 

  • Hide in the shadows to conceal yourself from enemies
  • Make use of hiding spots in order to remain undetected
  • Steal from guards in order to gain important items
  • Search for secret pathways like tunnels to reach secret areas
  • Traverse the Nation of Brumine and it's neighbors in search of clues for the lost heirloom 
Background/World History

The game is set in a fictional medieval fantasy world where in the a continent exists nations that are in constant struggle with one another. Since the year 650 the nations have fought each other with the worst war happening between the years 685 and 695. It became known as the 10 year war and led the Brumine nation to take control of the Ghora region previously part of the Likram nation. Many lives were lost on both sides but even with the victory the numbers for Brumine were far worse. 

 

Now is the year 706 and tension between the two nations have started to grow again. For fear of another 10 year war protests across Brumine's capital have been a common thing. Meanwhile in the shadows of it all, a young female thief named Estella tries avoid this war from happening using other methods. 

 

Main Characters

Estella: Young 22 year old thief Estella has a hard past behind her. Having lost her father to the 10 year war and her mother for a disease not long after she ended up moving in with her aunt and uncle. Treated as maid and unappreciated by them one day she decides to escape, badly hurting her uncle on the process. On the run she drops a necklace her mother gave it to her. Her only memory of better days. She ends up meeting a stranger she only knows as "The old one" who takes her in and teachers her the way of stealing.

 

After years of petty thefts she becomes a clever and dexterous thief. Later in her life she befriends the only other student of "The old one" called Tonan, who owns a bar at the capital. She decides to help him with the "jobs" he gets in exchange for his help gathering info on her family's necklace.

 

Tonan: Tonansky Makownov was born in the cold freezing land of the north. His father was a sailor who got involved with his mother and left to work on a exploration ship but never returned. With all the difficulties of living on the frozen northern regions his mother with his grandparents moved south to the promising Brumine nation and opened a store there. Business was prospering when suddenly his mother ended up getting killed by a thief after leaving the store late at night. He ended up being raised by his grandparents who died of old age later on. In his early 20s he decided to search for his mother's killer and ended up becoming a skilled thief in the process. He later met The Old Man who would become like a father to him.

 

He's 41 now and stopped being a thief, at least directly.

 

The old man: Little is known about the old man, except for the fact that he's a formidable thief. He has trained both Tonan and Estella and was known in his youth as the masked thief.

My goal with this project is to make a fun and enjoyable stealth game using the RPG Maker VX Ace. Yep, you read that right, it's a stealth game, not an RPG. I've always loved stealth games and decided to see if I was able to finish one. So the idea is to have a solid stealth game giving emphasis on pure stealth (staying hidden, not being detected, and so on) with a decent story to play out. I'm using a lot of cues from traditional RPG's stories so expect a lot of conversation and character development with mostly being optional.

 

Questions

  1. What did you think of the game? What's the best and worst?
  2. Are you into stealth games? What elements did you miss/ think are necessary?

I played your demo, and I loved it! I felt like I was playing Thief xD Im a sucker for any game stealth related.

Downloaded and played through. It was pretty cool and I see loads of potential here.

Here's my feedback:

Bugs:
  •  When stealing: A instead of S
  •  When entering through the door behind the guard that “finally leaves his post”, the saving message looks as the guard  behind the counter is saying “saving…”
  •  When finding the “main treasure”, the chest is left on autorun, breaking the game.
  •  Guard who finally leaves his post’s move route is bugged (walks into a wall)
  •  Is the first door you come across meant to be locked?
  •  Transfer events in cargo deposit are one square higher than they should be.
  •  Should include RTP (when selecting "compress game data" tick the box that says "include RTP data"
Open sound effect missing from iron bar door

Unable to find graphics file for prison cells map

Unable to find graphics file when leaving dining room

  •  When leaving the cargo deposit, game comes up with a script error, that’s as far as I can get.
I really like:

  • The hiding in stuff feature
  • Being able to change your stance (The main character looks so cool btw :p )
Possible Improvements:

  • Intro music really quite/ after intro music was a lot louder
  • Increase Guard’s step frequency. I know this is the game style, but it felt a bit tedious having to wait for guards to inch toward one end of their move one step at a time, then inch all the way back to get past them. My suggestion is have the guards constantly moving until they need to turn to face another direction. Then have them stop, wait a little bit, turn around, wait a little bit longer, then start moving.
I'll pm you some other stuff as well.

I couldn't get the key front the Elite guard ... Probably something I'm doing, but still. It's looking great so far.

You have to hold the A key rather than the S key

I realized that RPG maker doesn't export the key bindings that I set. You have to press A instead of S. I still need to look into this ;)

Fixes:

This was a pretty cool demo, gotta say i enjoyed the stealth action, very well thought out IMO.

Couple of bugs i spotted below,

I spotted a few typos and little bits that you could tidy up, a simple play-through with a keen eye and you'll spot them. 

I also noted, when you first get in the bar and speak with tonian and the two friends, they have

emotions above their heads, exclamation marks etc, they kind of interfere with the text bubbles.

Also, there are gaps in the "you 're/ They 're" etc.

I also chose to stay with tonian instead of returning to the bar, it then entered a cut scene of sorts and I assume someone entered this room, as they begin talking

about the ring, at this point the character that entered the room was invisible for me.

EDIT; ~ Also, you could add a unique title screen to the game, not sure if you're planning on it, but this would help to make it look more 'unique' as your game deserves.

Hey, tried out the demo.

Here's a list of stuff I picked up:

First of all, at some point during the second mission, guards stopped being able to see me. I could sprint straight past them and everything. Not sure what caused this; could be a freak occurrence or something.

A few typos. pm me if you want the list of what I picked up, otherwise meh.

I noticed a couple times in conversation there were 3 dot point things rather than 3 full stops - was this intentional?

During second mission, after you pickpocket the first major guard guy, you enter a room and a guard says: 

"(sighs) another long night."

Then Estella says:

"Guess there's no coming back the way I came" - was there a bit of text missing here? Not sure I followed her reasoning.

Anyway, I go back the way I came (out of curiosity), then when I enter the room again, the guard that was just talking was gone.
And, just a suggestion, you might want to give Tonan's place a different BGM than the tavern. It's good but it gets a bit monotonous when it's been playing for a while and all your doing is reading text.

Either way, it's good to see progress being made. Found all treasures in both levels... I think. Good luck :)

Really Cool! Exactly what I was hopeing to find the extra button functions though basic are pretty rad considering its rpg maker!!

Guys I can't stress enough how much your feedback pushes me to keep working on it and improving it. I think I got most of the typos corrected. Finished a new level and started working on a new one. Hope to have a better version by the end of this month!

Its amazing any plans on adding a throwing weapon function ?? I wanted to do a game like this only a slingshots found and shooting it can cause effects to happen that allow distractions to ensue or just be your own downfall!

Was there any coding required for this or no? Im really impressed although I merely run the RPG maker XP
