Synopsis
25+ hour game in traditional turn based side-view battle style combining characters in a Kingdom Hearts-esque fashion from all of my favorite things from childhood. This includes Dragonball Z, Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Breath of Fire 4, and Everquest just to name a few. The combat system features a unique combination of super saiyan transformations, chi attacks, magic, swords, and sci-fi weapons versus enemies of demonic and sci-fi nature.

The story follows the life of a Saiyan, Jace, living on modern day Earth. He is found and trained by Goku and Vegeta, who are from another planet, at a young age.

Before long, the young Saiyan learns that he is the 'Infini', hero of a Prophecy created before the dawn of the Universe. Guided by Archangels and his Saiyan mentors, the Infini travels space to various planets throughout the Universe, meeting new party members along the way, in search of ways to strengthen himself enough to handle the upcoming Apocalypse.

The party saves the universe several times from increasingly dangerous threats, travels time to save multiverses, and eventually storms hell itself in a climactic final battle!

Similar to DBZ, the game is split into 7 'Sagas', unique sub-plots that simultaneously function as individual stories of their own right and pieces to the overall story. Each Saga has its own special flavor that makes the game feel fresh throughout, all while gradually revealing the deeper overarching plot that links the Sagas together

Note: This plot was written before DB Super and thus doesn't have facts consistent with that series.

Characters (Playable)
Jace

Class: Infini

Background: Raised on planet Earth, he becomes a pupil of Goku and Vegeta. He is of Saiyan lineage, and has the potential to become the strongest of them all. As the story progresses, you will see him grow from a naive young boy, to a rashly overconfident teenager, to a wise and powerful leader.

Abilities: Flight, Chi Attacks, Transformations, Magic

Goku

Class: Grandmaster

Background: The protagonist of Dragonball, and the first Saiyan of the modern era to become a Super Saiyan. A century has gone by since the events of DBGT, and much has changed about his life circumstances. He finds his new life purpose in the discovery of an extremely powerful child, Jace.

Abilities: Instant Transmission, Chi Attacks, Kaioken, Chi based healing technique, Kamehameha, Spirit Bomb, Transformations.

Vegeta

Class: High Warlord

Background: The rival and companion of Goku. He is still the same hard boiled tough guy he always was, but he has in many ways matured with age.

Abilities: Chi Attacks, Galick Gun, Flying Kick, Final Flash, Transformations.

Zerg

Class: Voyager

Background: High ranking military officer from the Capitol of the Universe, Illumina. His Elite Task Force oversees the security of much of the known Universe. After saving Jace's life in the vacuum of space, they become great friends and allies while battling the forces of evil.

Abilities: Magic (Ice), Tools, Katanas, Intergalactic Travel

Flora

Class: Lifegiver

Background: Princess of the forgotten Kingdom of Doria, cursed to remain hidden from the rest of Earth. Upon meeting Jace, she cannot take her eyes off of him, but she soon discovers that theirs is a deeply spiritual connection. She is of incredibly pure heart, almost angelic.

Abilities: Healing, Water, Defensive Magic.

6th Party Member

Class: Mage

Background: I cannot reveal who this character is for fear of spoilers, but the character is quite powerful.

Abilities: Offensive Magic.

Battle Mechanics
TP (Tech Points)

TP is a pool of energy consumed by many attacks in battles. It is primarily used to fuel ‘Chi Attacks’ such as Kamehameha. TP is indicated by a green status bar, and has a maximum of 1000.

At the start of each battle, TP is reset to 100 for all characters who use TP. TP is spent when using special attacks, but it can be recharged in several ways:

  • Landing regular ‘Attacks’ (generates 50 TP per attack landed)
  • Landing ‘Dragon Fist’ (generates 50 TP if successful)
  • Taking damage (a percentage of damage taken is converted into TP)
  • Using ‘Charge Up’ (100% chance of gaining 100 TP at the cost of 1 turn)

Chi Attacks

Many playable characters can use Chi Attacks in battle. These are typically stronger than physical attacks, but consume TP to use.

Chi Attack damage is determined by the ‘Power’ stat. Furthermore, their damage output is heavily modified by Super Saiyan transformations.

Transformations

Saiyan characters will unlock Transformations as the game progresses. These transformations can only be done in battle, require TP to use, and will consume a turn while transforming. At the end of each battle, Transformations are reverted and you will return to your base form.

Though transformations only last until the end of the current battle, their benefits are profound:
  • Greater damage output from Chi Attacks (in some cases, FAR greater damage)
  • Higher Strength
  • Higher DefenseHigher chance to dodge
  • New sprite
While transformations can radically increase damage output, you lose a turn transforming. Therefore, only transform when you feel the increased damage output is worth the time spent transforming.

Magic

Certain Magic techniques are learned automatically as you level up. Others must be purchased from Spellshops, located in select cities throughout the game. Healing spells, in addition to certain healing items, have additional speed in battle. They will often be given top priority when determining who acts first in a battle’s turn.

Items

There is a hard limit to the amount of a particular item you are allowed to carry. This limit is different for different items, depending on how good the item is.

Special

Some characters will learn special techniques in battle that don’t belong under ‘Chi Attacks’ or ‘Magic’. These techniques can be found under the ‘Special’ menu, and typically consume TP to use in battle. Many Special techniques can be used outside of battle (covered in more detail under Overworld Mechanics).

Thanks man! I bet you guys get a LOT of DBZ stuff on here haha.

I should note though that this game really doesn't take place in anything like the DBZ universe. There are some familiar areas from the show, but 90% of the game takes place in locations that either exist, or loosely resemble environments from classic video games and folklore. For example, you will find yourself in a purple forest resembling the 'Moonlight Forest' from Seiken 3, and a rocky, mountainous planet called 'Utaii'. The 'Next Dimension' concept from DBZ is largely elaborate on and expanded.

Major Update:

First of all, the first 3 sagas have been largely re-balanced to be made easier in general and more welcoming to first timers. I realized my knowledge as a dev was improving my gameplay far beyond someone new, especially on the first few missions. Even I was getting my butt kicked before. Also, the first 3 sagas have less random battles, so the total gameplay through the end of the 3rd saga is now 7-8 hours, instead of 10!

Secondly, the 4th and 5th sagas are well in progress. The new package I've included here and in the OP includes random battle-less demos of much of the later saga contents. I am motivated again and have been having a stream of consciousness on plot development, so I expect lots of progress in the coming months. I have a VERY clear image of the conversations and events that will happen for the rest of the game, minus the 6th saga, which needs some fleshing out.

Finally, I have videos of the first 3 sagas on twitch! Please see the videos below:

Saga 1:
http://www.twitch.tv/kanis999/c/5523691

Saga 2 (3 parts):
http://www.twitch.tv/kanis999/c/5536812

http://www.twitch.tv/kanis999/c/5537545

http://www.twitch.tv/kanis999/c/5546443

Saga 3 and lots of samples of content under contruction:
http://www.twitch.tv/kanis999/c/6012044

ETA on game completion = 6 months

I am pleased to announce that I've just updated OP with the first package that has animated battles!

Wanted to also bump for a Youtube video I made demonstrating gameplay and battle mechanics:

Major Plot Update

Saga 4 plot events and maps are complete! I have updated the package in the OP. You can now see the saga 4 in its entirety minus random battles. The package includes a save file that will take you directly to the beginning of saga 4. Replace save name with 'save01' after extraction.

Thanks man, appreciate it.

New package in OP has random battles in Saga 4 and many Saga 4 bug fixes. Enemies in Sagas 1-3 are balanced, but Saga 4 enemies aren't quite done development yet.

At this point, plan is very concrete for plots of Sagas 5-7, meaning the plot for the entire game is done. Just need to program it, and all the accompanying maps.

I'd say game is ~60% complete now. Right about now marks 1 year of working on this project (though with sporadic time off).

I totally agree with your constructive criticism, thanks man.

Unfortunately it is something I don't see an easy solution for. Got like 500+ sprites in game currently with the chibi style characters. Ideally, the battle characters would be large sprites that actually look like anime characters and have much more animation. I would need a team of experienced battle programmers to do it though :(

I've decided to de-prioritze battles for a while. I really like DrakeValentine's suggestion of looking for partners to help with that aspect of the game. I do not feel that battles are my specialty, though I do try my best. If I cannot find partners, I will still work diligently to master battles before the final release (but after I finish developing everything else I'm about to mention)

I feel I specialize in plot, cutscenes, and dungeon design, so I am going to try and finish up all maps and events for the rest of the game without random battles. This will take many months, for I have at least 5 towns, tons of filler maps, and over 15 dungeons left to make. On top of that, I work on the game in spurts (albeit extremely obsessive spurts where nothing else in life matters during that time period!).

I am very clear on how the plot goes for the rest of the game so I will program custcenes as I map. There are essentially 3 'sagas' left in the plot. Saga 5 will feel kinda like DBZ (only saga to take place on the DBZ planet), and saga 6 will feel kinda like Chrono Trigger, with time travel and all. Saga 6 will also introduce a new character to your party I'm sure you will be very pleased to have.

Finally, Saga 7 is 100% about the overarching plot, which has been gathering tons of flavor throughout all of the other 6 sagas. Saga 7 is almost castlevania-esque in that it is basically one single MASSIVE dungeon split into multiple areas. I am really freaking stoked to see how these maps turn out.

I have picked out every single song for every single map and event in the game. Matching music to scenario/environment is by far my favorite aspect of game design. I am looking forward to showing the kind of songs I chose for final levels and final bosses.

The final boss will have 3 forms. His first form will play the track 'Dragon Blood', the song for the final form of the final boss Fou Lu in Breath of Fire 4. His 2nd form will play 'Birth of a God' from Sephiroth's first form in FF7. His final form will be a one-on-one battle with the hero, and will play an untitled track from the American Ocean Dub DBZ anime, which is famous for being played during the original Goku vs Vegeta fight from the Saiyan Saga (Best moment in the entire show imo).
I may change my mind and do more battle design along the way, but for now I am most excited about getting the rest of the plot and maps actualized.

If anyone is interested in programming badass chi attack animations, helping balance enemy stats, animating battles more in general, and attempting (if possible) to make the in-battle character sprites have non-chibi proportions, please let me know! I have your basic kamehameha's, chi blasts, and SSJ transformations programmed, but the more variety in skills I can add to the player party, the more fun the game can potentially be. Right now, I view the project more as me writing a book than making a game. Any help on the 'game' aspect would be awesome.

Updated Package

It has been a while since I've posted updates, so here's what's new:

- "Paradise City" mostly mapped, with lots of cutscenes

- First 4 dungeons of Saga 5 complete

- Bosses for Sagas 5 installed, but not balanced

- First half of Saga 5 plot fully installed. Very important for plot arc.

- First 3 sagas better balanced

- Saga 4 enemies nerfed, still not very balanced

All in all, I'd say Saga 5 (of 7) is about 40% complete. This is the longest Saga yet, with 8 total dungeons planned and 4 new cities.

I am liking Saga 5, because it is the first time I send you to collect all 7 dragonballs. I combine this theme with SNES Final Fantasy themes. Almost all of the music in Saga 5's dungeons is from a SNES Final Fantasy game.

Major Update Posted!

New Package

Saga 5 (of 7) is more or less complete, making the game 2/3rds or beyond complete. Saga 5 involves major plot development for the main character while sending players on a dragonball hunt, where they must find all 7 in different dungeons. All of the maps are complete except for the interiors of cities, which are currently unimportant because:

There are no random battles in saga 5 yet. You will fight bosses, but they are currently easy. My plan is to nail down all maps, cutscenes, boss sprites, flavor, etc, for the entire game before I finish programming battles for Sagas 4-7. The dungeons you experience are still varied and interesting without battles, and some of the cutscenes are epic.

Here is a teaser video of what to expect:

WARNING: This video will spoil a major antagonist for saga 5! Do not watch if you want to be surprised by who you fight.

Save File Starting at Saga 5

If you feel like starting with the new content rather than the beginning, download the save file above and replace file name with 'Save01' in root game directory. Your first in-game task upon opening this save file will be to use the 'Fly' technique from the 'Special' skills menu, and go to 'Paradise City'. I'm telling you this only because this save file just barely missed a cutscene explaining where to go.

Hey this looks pretty cool :D

I take it you've seen the dragonball sprites by Pine? might be worth incorporating :)
Hi,

Thanks for pointing that out. I have those sprites saved and I did some basic editing to make them glow like super saiyan. Unfortunately, it just wasn't mixing right with the other sprites imo. While those sprites do look amazing, and more like the actual characters, the artistic style is different than every other sprite in the game. Long term, I could see myself still trying to include them somehow though. TBH the main thing holding me back is that it took like 5 hours to get the original sprites set up with all the super saiyan transformations I have and I'm not sure if I even remember what to do to do that process from scratch again.

You get used to the sprite I'm currently using for Goku and Vegeta though, because their clothing is GT clothing rather than the traditional DBZ outfits as seen in Pine's sprites. Here's the face for Goku and Vegeta:

Goku has this blue shirt on in GT, and Vegeta is wearing a black jacket over a red shirt. I had the sprites try to match this. Vegeta's sprite actually looks pretty close to this when viewed from the front and back, just not necessarily the side.

Will try to mess with the sprites some more eventually! Once I'm done with everything "core" in the game, I'm going to spend a couple months adding as many details like this as I possibly can.

Update Time!

New Package

Updates

- Saga 5 of 7 is officially done in all aspects except for random encounters, which are disabled.

- Fleshed out all of Saga 5's cities and added all Saga 5 flavor text. The 'Z Planet', where DBZ took place is now 100% fleshed.

- Added much more detail to some Saga 5 dungeon maps.

- Added the very beginning of Saga 6.

- Added a God Mode cheat for those looking to breeze through the game with extreme power! To activate the cheat:

Enter Kanis as your main character's name (case sensitive!) and then take the sailboat you will eventually locate to a very mysterious spot on the map where you found the sailboat.

- When random encounters stop being balanced in saga 4, I give you the option to turn off random encounters and only fight bosses. Best option if you're just interested in the story.

- Added hyperbolic time chamber, which can be used for a power up starting in saga 4.

Agenda

1. Map out Saga 6 and flesh out the story and events. Saga 6 is shorter than the past 2 sagas, so this will go by quicker than usual. It'll probably take me 2 months to get this done.

2. Add a few new cutscenes to earlier parts of the game to give the story even more detail. Want to give more exposition to certain bad guys so they get hyped up more. Similarly, want to add some flashbacks and exposition cutscenes to flesh out certain good guys.

3. Map out the 7th and final Saga of the game and add Saga 7 events. Saga 7 will be the longest saga to complete hands down. I already have twice as many dungeons planned for this saga as any other saga. The entire saga will consist of voyaging into the pits of hell, fighting famous RPG bosses along the way. I could easily see this taking an additional 4-6 months.

4. Add and balance all random battles for Sagas 4-7. Finalize all player character abilities and stats, finalize all items and shops, finalize all equipment upgrades, and finalize the boss fights. The game's battles are currently only balanced to the end of Saga 3. I've chosen to save the rest of balancing for last because I need all core events in place to properly pace the battles as I go. I expect balancing to take another 2 months.

5. Release complete game 1.0. Looks like this will be a solid 8-10 months from now.

6. Add fixes for any bugs found by players and add all the niceties I've wanted to to do but couldn't prioritize over core stuff. This will become version 1.1.

As a cool bonus to you, here is a map of the 'Z Planet', where DBZ took place. You'll spend Sagas 4 and 5 on this planet. Each city/dungeon you see on the map is full of detailed maps and events:

In addition, here is the game concept map, which shows how the entire game is structured. This can also be found in the original post starting now. This game has a huge array of locations that are interconnected in complex ways. Rather than a single overworld with locations to visit, the scope of travel is more loosely defined. You will have worlds within worlds, solar systems to fly through, time travel, and travel between layers of heaven and hell. This chart will help you understand the structure of the game world, which is split into 7 'dimensions', as referred to in DBZ's oceandub.

Somewhat important, I added a section to the original post called 'The 7 Sagas'. I've been referring to Saga numbers all throughout this thread without actually explaining what the sagas are, so here is the insider's scoop on Sagas.

This game's plot is split into 7 distinct Sagas, or chapters. Each saga is a story within the story, usually with a unique final boss for that saga. All 7 sagas fall under one overarching plot, but they each have a unique focus plot-wise. Each saga focuses on a distinct part of the hero character's development. Here is a synopsis of the 7 Sagas:

Saga 1 - Childhood

See the hero's childhood while getting exposed to the core plotline. Takes place primarily on planet Earth, where the hero is mentored by Goku and Vegeta.

Saga 2 - Illumina

The teenage hero runs away from home to visit the futuristic capitol of the universe itself, Illumina. You will make many new allies and battle a legion of space terrorists known as The Rift.

Saga 3 - Coming of Age

The hero discovers humility and love. He becomes a full grown adult and must save Earth from a new villain without the use of his chi abilities.

Saga 4 - Triton

The hero forms a private space army, Triton, for the sole purpose of battling demons infiltrating the universe from hell. While cleansing the universe of the demons, however, The Rift returns to cause more trouble.

Saga 5 - The Missing Daughter

The hero decides to reunite with his 3 long lost daughters, who were taken into foster homes during Saga 4, but finds that one has gone mysteriously missing. He must collect the 7 dragonballs on Goku and Vegeta's homeplanet, the Z Planet, in order to find his missing daughter.

Saga 6 - The Nether Vortex

The hero discovers time travel, and meets the mythical Watcher. The hero must travel back in time to the origin of the universe to find the evil Archfiend Chaos.

Saga 7 - Descent to Hell

The prophecy unfolds, and the hero is forced to journey into hell and defeat Satan, along with Satan's three all powerful sons. Everything comes together for an epic climax!

So now when you see me say, for example, that Sagas 1-5 are done, you have a much better idea of how much development is remaining.

As for an overall update, I've finished mapping the first dungeon of Saga 6. I've written at least half of the conversations in Saga 6 as well, meaning they can be added to the game as soon as the maps are developed which include the cutscenes.

I think your game is awesome, complex and solid. The game's first year anniversary is near. How are we celebrating?

Can't wait to see what the next update has in store for us.
