Also, whenever i tried to fly to space, it won't move my character, it lags so badly that it won't even let me travel to different places.

@SonGoku wow that sucks, really sorry about that. Can you describe where it crashed exactly? Do you know the RAM and video card on your computer? Space has a very large number of events in it, and I'm not sure if I can do much about it at this point.

Changelist:


1. 'Mastered' balancing of Sagas 1-3. I've reduced the random encounter rate to focus more on exploration and all fights should be fair now.

2. Various graphic improvement. Flora's face portrait improved. Many maps better.

3. Music updates. Songs loop better. New songs added. Unused songs removed from directory to save space.


4. Saga 1-3 text vastly improved. Conversations flow better. More flavor text. There's a new cutscene in Saga 3 (can't really describe it bc spoilers, buts its a damn good cutscene)

5. Many bug fixes. Most notably disabled menuing during cutscenes.


6. Improvements made based on tester experiences (yes, I've had testers finally).


My motivation is high now that people have actually tried the game out. I'm going to try and finish Saga 4 battles and hopefully Saga 5 this week.

Sorry man, I don't know why that's happening. Wondering if maybe it is a Win 8 issue because nobody who has played on Win 7 so far has had any issues. You have plenty of RAM but maybe CPU needs to be faster I'm not sure.


I think I can fix the lag in space (or at least improve it). I have an intensive cutscene in space that is probably causing the lag. Even while the cutscene isn't running the events exist, which can cause lag. To fix this I can put the cutscene on a separate clone map of space.

P.S. Saga 4 is almost done (as in 100% done, to every last detail). I'm on a roll. I think I've gotten better at balancing the battles. This game could be done in about a month.

Unfortunately I'm also involved in a DKC2 speedrunning tournament that will end up taking a lot of my time. I'll see if I can somehow balance these two hobbies.

Changes:

  • Battles 100% balanced through Saga 4 (of 7)

    Saga 4 enemies now have stats and many unique moves
  • Saga 3 some battle changes
  • New Spells
  • First Saga to use 4 balanced player characters throughout
  • Saga 4 boss has the most complex 'troop' script I've made so far
  • Lots of fun equipment upgrades that get progressively more interesting and effective

[*]Final player spell list programmed, and inserted into game's spellshops. 

  • Many new custom animations for spells like Fire III, Lightning III, Meteo, Ice Comet, Dark Matter, Flare, Holy, Holy II
  • Some spells that once were learned on level up now require purchase in spellshops
  • New moves for Zerg all with a 'blaster' theme (as in laser gun)
  • Improved animations for Saiyan techniques like Kamehameha and Final Flash

[*]All shops 100% done.

  • Roughly 13 cities throughout the game
  • Each city contains item shop, weapon/armor shop, inn, and spellshop (sometimes)
  • All have fully populated shop tables with appropriate prices

[*]Vastly improved maps for:

  • Heaven
  • Triton (MASSIVE space military base)
  • Gobi Desert

[*]Massive cutscene imrovements

  • Several completely new cutscenes that explain things once ambiguous or underdeveloped
  • Heavy editing on many cutscenes in Sagas 3, 4 and 5 to improve clarity of events and enhance the game world
  • Tons of text edited to fit more aesthetically into the text frame

[*]Bug fixes:

  • Techniques not forgotten that should have been
  • Space background now moves in such a way to convey movement better
  • Plot inconsistencies and NPC inaccurate statements
  • Several songs didn't loop cleanly
  • More child friendly content (though I'd still give it a PG13)
  • Lots of cutscenes could be interrupted by menuing
  • Various legitimate tester complaints, such as weak healing from the white mage
  • Lag issues caused by excessive sprites
  • Innumerable other minor fixes




Stay tuned for more updates before the end of the year. All that's really left to finalize the game is creating and balancing the random encounters for Sagas 5-7. Maybe some cutscene editing here and there. We're almost there.

If I had infinite time and resources, I'd totally want this game to be a comic book and/or cartoon. Maybe I will someday, and remove the copyrighted characters.


As far as actual game progress since the last post, I've added all the enemies I want to have in Saga 5, but their stats are still generic unbalanced.

Massive Update - Saga 5 Complete


New Package


Demo of Saga 5 Final Boss (Don't watch if you don't want spoilers):










Changes:

  • Battles 100% balanced through Saga 5 (of 7)

    Saga 5 enemies now have stats and many unique moves
  • Lots of fun equipment upgrades that get progressively more interesting and effective
  • The last 2 bosses in this saga are among the hardest so far
  • 8 more completed dungeons with over 30 new enemies
  • By the end of Saga 5 your characters will be about Level 50-55. This was exactly my plan from the start so I'm pleased with the pacing.

[*]Game is ridiculously long and in depth

  • My playtest from the beginning of the game to the end of Saga 5 took 16 hours! And I knew where to go (but did talk to most townsfolk, check most chests, etc)
  • The length isn't because I abuse random battles, don't worry. A huge portion of the 16 hours comes from cutscenes, exploration, and solving dungeon puzzles
  • No 2 environments are too similar. Almost every dungeon, town, and outdoor zone has a completely different look and feel from the others.

[*]New moves

  • Mostly new enemy moves with some unique animations
  • Goku and Vegeta both got a new move

[*]Vastly improved text for Saga 5

  • Through several drafts of revision, the plot makes a billion times more sense
  • Character personalities are showing more
  • Generally much more engaging plot than before revisions, imo

[*]Vastly improved a few maps

[*]Critical bug fixes

  • Crash in saga 2
  • Screen stuck in faded out in saga 3

[*]Edits to some faces for more expressions. Nothing dumber than seeing a character with a smiling face say "I'm so scared!!!" lol

[*]A few more save points in dungeons. I don't want you all to have to do long corpse runs if you die to a boss.

[*]Overall progress on the game is well over 90%. Very few tasks remain:

  • Develop the random encounters for Sagas 6 + 7 (the last 2, Saga 6 isn't even that long)
  • Make the bosses in Sagas 6 + 7 the most interesting and badass bosses so far
  • Minor revisions to the Sagas 6 + 7 maps and cutscenes, which are all already developed.




If you want to play this game, I think it'll be a good experience even though it isn't 100% complete yet. Yes, the last 20% of the game doesn't have random battles or balanced boss fights, but the maps, dungeons and cutscenes are all there. It'll still feel like you've experienced the full plot. But I understand if you want to wait for the rest of the fighting to be developed, especially if battles are the main thing you enjoy in RPGs. I can't promise any particular deadline for the complete product, but if I busted my ass it couldn't take more than a couple weeks to finish. I'm involved in some competitive gaming so I can't focus on this project all the time, but I'll try to get it done soon.

Massive Update - Saga 6 Complete


New Package


Changes:

  • Battles 100% balanced through Saga 6 (of 7)

    60 new enemy troop formations
  • 8 new bosses
  • 12 + new enemy attacks
  • 6 new dungeons
  • The longest dungeon in the game so far (last dungeon of saga 6)

[*]Player character improvements

  • 4 new useful utility buffs for Flora
  • Several equipment upgrades with unique properties for each player character
  • The final character to join the party developed. This character is introduced in late saga 6, and is very powerful.
  • By the end of Saga 6 you will have the final party formation, and will be ~ level 65

[*]Major plot reveals

  • Saga 6 sets the stage for the climax in Saga 7
  • Many hidden truths about the main character revealed at last
  • Tension mounts

[*]Vastly improved a few maps and existing conversations




The game is almost done!


There are 7 Sagas in this game and 6/7 are now 100% developed and tested. I'd consider the game as a whole 95% complete!


All that remains:

  • Create enemies for Saga 7 random battles and balance their stats.
  • Place them on the already fully developed maps for Saga 7
  • Balance the 24 remaining epic boss battles that occur during Saga 7 (yeah I really go all out with bosses here)
  • Make sure player character stats scale appropriately for the final level ups and upgrades (should end up around level 80-90 by the final boss)
  • Proofread Saga 7 cutscenes and conversations
  • Improve the outro cutscenes
  • Test Saga 7
  • Re-test the entire game one more time

After 3 years, the Beta package is out! Game is complete and balanced from beginning to end. Just needs more testing.

Some fun facts about the game:

  • Playthrough is over 25 hours long (27 for me and I knew where to go)
  • 544 individual maps
  • 62 total boss fights, with 2 incredibly hard optional superbosses
  • 6 playable characters balanced with 10+ gear upgrades for most characters
  • Over 25 spells can be learned by party members (many highly customized with unique animations)
  • Optional endgame armor quest based on farming materials (required for superbosses)
  • Smooth progression from level 1 to the 90's right in time for the final boss.
  • 7 distinct chapters form separate sub-plots that converge during the climax.

The game is a little closer to production quality now. Lots of text has been revised, some battles have been rebalanced, and Saga 2 is massively overhauled. I made Saga 2 very early in the development process, and since then I have learned so much more. The Saga 2 revamp takes the techniques I've learned throughout the rest of development process and applies them. This equates to better cutscenes, and better text.

One map, Myriar, has been completely redone. I feel bad for anyone who played through the old version of this map because it was pretty bad and had waaaay too many random battles. This dungeon should be a more enjoyable experience now.

I hope I can get the whole thing to the quality I really desire soon so I can finally post this in the completed games section. I can't think of much more that needs fixing. Going to complete another test playthrough.

Good news everyone, I've completed testing and fixed lots of issues. There is also now 8 directional movement, and a super top secret area you may never find ;).

I'm going to stop updating this page and now take the game to the completed games section!

Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
