The battle mechanics of Legionwood 2 are kind of modelled on tabletop RPGs and the video games based on them (ie. Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights) and so you are right -- it actually IS a dice roll. In those games, it's quite common to get a string of bad luck and miss often in the early levels (I remember getting killed in the first area in Baldur's Gate by wandering monsters at least three times), but it shouldn't happen every time. I like to have an element of chance in an RPG as a personal preference to keep the players on the toes, which is why the game is designed like this. This style of gameplay is certainly not for everyone. Many people who are used to normal J-RPG mechanics will be taken by surprise, as Legionwood 2 is more of a J-RPG/C-RPG hybrid than the first game was.
That said, most of the testers have found the difficulty of the game to be managable, and at a similar level to Legionwood 1. I do agree that the opening was a little too hard, so I toned it down and re-released the demo today. If you downloaded it yesterday or on release day, you probably still have the original version. In the current one which I tested today, the first boss was doing a very managable 20-30 damage per hit.
Thank you for your interest, though. Perhaps my next game will be different.
