RPG Maker Forums

One of the nice things about the community here is our broad range of tastes and interests. Each of us can make vastly different games with the same version of the Maker.

I prefer standard fantasy fare. I love the medieval times (although living in them would have sucked). Designing various aspects of my current project has been even more fun by the fact that as I research terms, ways of life, etc. I stumble upon some great articles. (Example: This article on old logging practices.)

While research I happened to think about the fact that this community is a huge repository of knowledge as well. I thought it would be fun, informative and useful to discuss some aspects of medieval villages, both in games and in real life. Here are some questions that I have been thinking on, and I would like to see everyone's views and opinions on them.

  1. People used to mine out stone, then cut them into blocks and other useful parts. What would you call them? What would you name the building/area in which they performed their work?
  2. Same goes for wood. What were the names for a person who chopped down the tree? What about the person that cut the logs into lumber? How about the buildings they used.
  3. Who planned out growth in a village?
  4. What were key buildings that every village should have?
To toss out some of my answers (please don't let my answers sway yours).
  1. To me a miner would work a quarry or a cave to mine out ores and stone. A stone cutter would cut those into usable stone and a mason would put that usable stone to use. A Stonecutter and a Masonry would be the names of the areas for those.
  2. A lumberjack would chop down the trees, a sawyer would saw up the logs and a carpenter would work the lumber into whatever the end product would be. A Sawmill and a Carpenter's Shop would be the buildings.
  3. I would think a Village Elder or Mayor would plan out the layout and design of a village, as well as handle the overseeing of the village.
  4. As far as key buildings: Church (or similar), Shop and an Inn should be a basic requirement in a game. Additional would be a Smithy, Magic/Military/Class Schools, Sawmill, Masonry, Town Center. There are many more I am sure, but just not off the top of my head.

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
