I'm going to be working on a adventure/puzzle project for a game jam that has the main character's head turn into a TV set. However, this actually turns out to be useful, in that it gives you abilities such as:
  • Being able to play VHS tapes that let you access (mini) levels (i.e. a recording of a 1950's sitcom sends you to a grayscale Americana street).
  • Hooking up to security camera feeds allows you to see through the cameras.
  • Playing a laugh-track can get an NPC's attention/startle them.
  • Turning to a blue screen allows a player to see in the dark.
I'm trying to think up more abilities that the player might have access to, and was wondering if anyone had any ideas on here. (The game has hostile NPCs, but not really any real fighting.)

I'm mostly at a loss for ideas, but this concept is hilarious and awesome.

Maybe turning the channel to something inspirational to turn a hostile NPC to your side, or turning the channel to something wildly entertaining to distract a guard once he's spotted you?

Maybe a few puzzles that require you to change the Tint and Contrast to see things that are initially hidden, or an activity that requires you to correctly and finely "tune" your display to avoid getting too much static?

Perhaps some 8-bit-videogame-inspired minigame that you literally play on your own head, with certain extra-diegetic features like resetting the game or tilting the screen actually baked into the minigame's gameplay?

You will probably want to lean into some subset of the mechanics rather than trying to throw in the kitchen sink, but the more I think about this idea, the more it feels like a winner.

Hmm there are definitely many possibilities.
I can only think about 2 abilities:
-Hiding your body behind a desk can make the NPC think you're a real TV
(it's like a camouflage system).
-Use boring channel to make the NPC fell asleep.

This can be a good combo.
Disguising as a genuine TV, then making the NPC fell asleep as they approach you. :D

Even though I spent 100's of dollars on my game already. I think I might just have to give it away for free. Since I haven't heard back from people if I could use some of their graphics. Even from a global mod here. Maybe I can make a donation thing.
you know, some days you get resentful that game dev is even considered a "fun job" and other days it's like, welp, time to roll up my sleeves and code these molotov cocktails
If you suck at playing trumpets, that is probably why.
Been sick with a stomach virus for seven days now. Not going to work tomorrow because I'm still contagious according to my doctor.
Much as I love my job, I really hate playing "office politics". It would be nice if I didn't have to pretend to be someone else all day long.
