Firstly, there's
Clouded Heart. It's not great, graphics-wise. In fact, the early parts of the game are... pretty bad. The mapping does get better as you go along (or at least, easier to ignore) but the characters are where it's at with this game. They're written very well and you just grow to love them a lot over time. There's this one part... well, no spoilers, but there's a death scene that was great. Also, towards the end the game got pretty fun. I really recommend it if you can look past the graphics of a game.
The Way - it's a bit of a controversial series when it comes to whether it's a great game or not. A lot of people don't like the systems in it. A lot of others do. Most everyone can agree that the story is pretty great and that there's a lot of work that's gone into the game. It has multiple endings and lots of great characters. There are bad and good points but in my opinion, it's one of the better games of its era (early 00's). It also has one of my favourite female characters from an RM game - Scatha.
Notes of the Second Mellynd War is a tale of friends who are living through a war that came apon them unexpectedly. It's a great little 2k3 game with a lot of heart and interesting characters and great story telling. There's apparently an XP remake in progress, too, as well as a side-story.
Story of Innocence One of my favourites, it's the tale of two girls, though only one path is currently open. The story telling is amazing in this game and I'm eagerly awaiting the next release. I even wrote a review for it! One day I shall LP...
Legion Saga II is the best of the Legion Saga series. Drawing inspiration (and, in some cases, out-right ripping the story of) the Suikoden series, these games were fun, interesting and had some pretty neat story aspects to them (aside from the whole 'stealing Suikoden' thing). They're classics and if you enjoy Suikoden, you'll probably enjoy these three as well.
The one
butterfly game that I still don't remember the name of and can't find anywhere that was made in (I believe) XP for one of RMN's birthday events. It took about 5 minutes to finish but it was such a sweet piece of work and I'm so upset I can't find the damn thing and that no-one seems to remember it. :/
Beautiful Escape: Dungeoneer I'm prepared to catch a bit of flack for this one. Yeah. It's not for kids - hell, I don't think it's even for sane adults, but if you want a game that will make you question your morals, this is it. It's one of those games that you either love or hate. It's also one of those games where people will hit Alt+F4 because they can no longer play it. It's not a horror, in the definition of horror we use for games, but it is horrific. I do not recommend anyone under the age of 16 play because, frankly, the situations it deals with are not juvenile and should not be laughed at or joked about. It's one of those very serious games and I was hesitant to add it to this list because while I think it's a game that does what it intended to do in a great way, it is not a game that you can call a favourite. It does, however, deserve to be shared. Just don't blame me if you have issues with it because I will say I warned you.
Love and War One of the best-known classic games about politics and love. It's a great game to boot. It recently got an over-haul to update the graphics and it looks great. I highly recommend checking it out.
The Frozen World - or any game by Lysander, really. He threw out a lot of great games while he was in the community and was considered the best by many people. Even now, people still await his long awaited sequel to A Blurred Line - his most-loved game. Personally I prefer Frozen World, despite it's mapping issues and the clunky battle system. At one point WIP, (once-dictator of RMN) was creating a revamp, but it fell by the way-side. Which is a pity because the game story and characters are very well done and the gameplay - bar the clunkyness - is quite interesting, too.
Kinetic Cypher (Again) Widely considered to be one of the best puzzle RPGs of its era, KC is a great game, even if it is a demo. It's a pity the creator just stopped because everything about the game was great. Characters were interesting, story was intriguing, battles were challenging and puzzles were puzzling.
Dhux's Scar One of the few religious-heavy games that is serious in content, Dhux's Scar is one of those games you can't explain, but have to play to understand. Let's just say that there's a lot of death, a bit of gore and some awesome story-telling, characters and graphics and leave it at that.
Leo and Leah Forget Pom, this is the cutest game ever. Follow a young lion cub as he tries to rescue the love of his life. Coming from the creator of A Home Far Away, it's no surprise that this game is so fun and entertaining. The characters are neat, the graphics all fit in a clashed kinda way and the cuteness is in overdrive.
The Most Stupidest Game Ever: Re-duh! If you like to laugh, enjoy a good bit of humour and don't mind a few Monty Python jokes thrown around, then this game is worth checking out. It's one of those games where you wonder why you're playing, then you encounter a smurf village and it all makes sense. Seriously, for laughter, I recommend this.
Everlasting Journey Another humour-driven game, this time with a great plot, fun characters and pretty awesome graphics. Though still a demo, it's a pretty decent game and a lot of fun to play, thanks to the characters and humour. Also has a lot of neat ideas and is great for inspiration.
Jay's Journey is one of those very overlooked classic games. Sure, it's mapping isn't the best, but the story and characters are what make this game worth playing. It's one of my personal favourites. Also, one of the first instances of well-used voice acting in an RM game.
Three The Hard Way - One of the better full games out there when it comes to story and characters, this is still topping a lot of older players' lists of what is a great game. There a points that make you laugh, parts that have brought tears to my eyes and while the graphics are a bit of a jumbled mis-match, the rest of the game is pure gold.
Paradise Blue is one of those beautiful games with completely original graphics. It hits all the right points for a game of it's type and while the story itself might be a touch darker than you'd think, the bright graphics - a staple of Ocean Dreams' - make you feel like you're on the brightest adventure of all. Tongue-in-cheek in some ways, the writing is well done and the battles are fun too. It's a really well-rounded game and I'm gonna have to LP it one of these days.
The Longing Ribbon was one of the first horror games released for RPG Maker and it still holds up well against current games. It's scary, unsettling and sadly overlooked when it comes to people doing LPs of 'scary RM games'. Which is a pity because, while the battle system is balls (there aren't many battles iirc) the general story and atmosphere was great.
Hero's Realm - I would be very remiss if I didn't add this game to the pile, especially as it's been an inspiration to me in my own creations. It's a mix of everything good from the early Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games and it fricking rocks. It's a lot longer than most of the games on this list, and it definitely deserves the accolades it's received in the past. While the story is simplistic, everything else makes up for it.
Lastly,
Sunset Over Imdahl because, frankly, there are a lot of great games that I love the hell out of but this list has got to end. SOI is one of those games that just pops up out of no-where and shocks everyone because, holy Frick, this game. Not only is it one of the first parallaxed games that was created (and possibly the first complete and completely parallaxed game), it's an amazing piece of work. As such, I now want to LP it. See what you did, Dalph? Now I've added at least half these to my 'To LP' list. :/
Frankly, there's a hell of a lot more games I could add to this list. You may have noticed that I've stuck to the classics - that is, the 2k/3 era. While I do enjoy a lot of the new games and there are some on my favourites list (like Princess Princess, Star-Stealing Prince, Manifest, The Grumpy Knight and quite a few others) I have to admit that my most beloved games are those of the 2k/3 platforms. I have reasons for that - it's partly nostalgia and partly some small piece of me that I can't quite explain, but the old games are always going to hold a pretty big chunk of my heart.
I've included links to those whose links I could find. Some can be found around the internet if you google them. You may or may not see a few of these LP'd in the future, too.
