1. Introduction

Little Briar Rose is a graphic adventure game inspired by “Sleeping Beauty” fable (the Grimm brothers version) and is our entry for the 2014 Indie Game Maker Contest.

In this game we’ll play as a brave prince that will try to save the princess, under a spell that makes her sleep forever. In order to save her, the prince will have to explore the enchanted forest that isolates the outer world from the castle where she’s penned.
It won’t be easy to save her: the forest is populated by different magic creatures, and the prince will have to understand and help them, so he can break the curse.

2. Characters

You are the prince of the fable, but will you be the real Charming Prince? Or will you just be an ordinary pretender, like Philip, Arthur and Edward before you? As the legend says, "Many tried, but only one prevailed". Every time you fail, a new suitor will come and try to save the kingdom.

3. Gameplay

This is a Graphic Adventure where you have to use the mouse for everything:

  • Look: to look far items
  • Action: to use an item or interact with an object
  • Talk: to talk with peoples
  • Go: move your hero to next the map
There are several items around the game. To use an item, select it from the item menu and click on the character or the area you want to use it.

Got to say, this looks gorgeous. Seems to be a good, old fashioned point-n-click with a fresh coat of paint. I'm looking forward to checking it out.

I don't like magic and sorcery, so i won't play this game, but your graphics are beautiful

I want to play this just to interact with the artwork. Beautiful and very different! The premise sounds fun too.

I think my jaw dropped when I saw the screenshots. Each and every one of those pictures could be a wallpaper.

I can't wait to try this, and kudos for an interesting premise too.

The art style is so unique. OwO It is seriously adorable. I like the idea of the gameplay, too, sounds like they will play together well. Definitely excited to see more. eweb

That was cool.

Only thing was the use of the word "kid", that sort of jars with the idea of a fairytale (this may just be me, but the word "kid" gets thrown around in a lot of things where it doesn't fit). Would Young Man, Youth or Boy not fit better?

Other than that, totally jealous! Looks awesome.

OK! We released it! Thank you for your feedback, guys ><

@hotfirelegend: I'll pass you my first project and, after laughting a lot on my mistakes, you'll change your mind about it ;)

@paladin: uhm... our translator had to cut some words in order to create a poem, and kid was sufficiently short, I think. But I got your point!

Let us know what do you think about it!

Just finished the game, it was the noble prince Edward who prevailed :)

I really enjoyed it a lot, music's nice, art's amazing, story interesting. The only things I noticed were spelling and grammar errors. I think it would be nice if someone who's a native English speaker could proofread it for you.

Some errors I remembered:

  • Not sure if it's intentional, but the music outside the forest is much more quite than inside the forest.
  • If you present flowers as relics for the gnomes, in the merman cutscene it will say theyr fury, instead of their.
  • After fixing the lake, Mermaid: "...help from the gnomed" => gnomes
  • Also not sure if intentional, but the mermaid asks for a dark berry, instead of an ink berry.
  • During the insult scene, the gnome says "But if I haven't seen you..." should be "But I haven't seen you..."
  • Also during that scene, the crow goes: "...were you saying..." instead of "...what were you saying..."
There were more though I think, so hopefully somebody who's native in English will come and help you out :)

  • Also not sure if intentional, but the mermaid asks for a dark berry, instead of an ink berry.
It could have been purposefully non-specific, since the game generally requires that you explore every nook and cranny of your surroundings and use some basic logic skills in order to progress.

I already mentioned it among the comments page within the game's IGMC profile, but this was highly charming and enjoyable!

Sorry for the slow answer D:

We added a new version yesterday, that fixes many minor bugs and adds an achievement system to the game ;) Thank you for your feedback and bug reports!

@slimmmeiske2:

  • Not sure if it's intentional, but the music outside the forest is much more quite than inside the forest.
It's intentional, but you're not the first that reported me that as a bug... maybe after the contest I'll add a kind of fade-in

  • If you present flowers as relics for the gnomes, in the merman cutscene it will say theyr fury, instead of their.
  • After fixing the lake, Mermaid: "...help from the gnomed" => gnomes
Fixed ;)

  • Also not sure if intentional, but the mermaid asks for a dark berry, instead of an ink berry.
As Ratty524 said, it's intentional ;)

  • During the insult scene, the gnome says "But if I haven't seen you..." should be "But I haven't seen you..."
  • Also during that scene, the crow goes: "...were you saying..." instead of "...what were you saying..."
Fixed :3

I'm doing my own reviewing thread, but figured I'd post this here in case you missed it.

Little Briar Rose

Comments: I've been itching to play this one for a while. The stained glass graphics sucked me in, so I really had little choice in the matter.

Rating: 4.5/5

Story;

The story, while there and the main driving force behind the whole thing, wasn't really delved into as such, based, obviously, on the tale of Sleeping Beauty. It was a story I knew already, and as such the lack of story focused gameplay didn't bother me very much.

Graphics;

There is but one word to be uttered for the Graphics in this.

WOW

and that is all.

Gameplay;

I liked the way the gameplay worked out in this, the fulfilling quests before you could progress, and it was interesting. The only thing I didn't like was that when my Prince got it wrong he turned into a Spriggan and a new one appeared to take his place, meaning I had to do the whole quest all over again. I would have preferred being just one Prince, the whole way through no matter what, with maybe the option to retry the decisions made.

Final Comments;

Overall this game was lovely, quaint and in keeping with a sort of childhood veiw of things. There were some spelling and grammatical errors I picked up on, which could be a little jarring because they cropped up so unexpectidly in what was otherwise a lovely little game.

Worth a play through, but be warned to be very, very careful before committing to any choices.

Back in action to develop the indie game that has been long overdue... Final Fallacy. A game that keeps on giving! The development never ends as the developer thinks to be the smart cookie by coming back and beginning by saying... "Oh bother, this indie game has been long overdue..." How could one resist such? So I was playing with filters and this looked interesting...

Versus the normal look...

Kind of gives a very different feel. :LZSexcite:
