I'm getting the fabled "load violation of address ..." error in 2k3. My project is in the official steam version of 2k3 and has never been opened in any other maker other than the steam version. Two of these errors pop up when attempting to open the Troops tab (see screenshots below), and one error pops up in the Battle Screen tab (also shown below).

I've googled and read every thread related to this error I could find. I have tried the advice of expanding all resources up to a large amount of slots (Actors, Classes, Skills, Items, Enemies... etc) in all of the tabs and even the switches and variables, but no dice.

I also have an earlier backup of the project in which everything works. I have tried comparing the project folders side by side and verifying that every single image/sound/other media file that is included in the working project is also in the broken project. What's weird is since that last backup, I haven't even touched the database. The only modifications I've made are adding new backgrounds (via Panorama/Parallax maps), so it feels like the project got corrupted somehow.

Kinda at a loss here.. anything else I could try? Anyone hex-savvy out there able to tell me what the memory locations might indicate? I understand 00000608 at 004979cf points to an area in memory the engine is attempting to draw from. How about 00000018 at 0050e74f?

Any point in the right direction would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

question back.
which rpg2003.exe cause this error?!?

steam? or project?
suggestion:
1. copy rpg2003 from other project
  • make new project
  • close project (steam rpgmaker also just in case)
  • take the rpg2003.exe put on your project
  • cek it out? still error?
2. reinstall rpgmaker 2k3 from steam.
3. try using pirated for testing ONLY. NOT recommended.. this is last resort..
  • make sure your antivirus are active
  • if the site say you must turn off AV.. please search another
  • take the rpg2003 from pirated and tried again
As you mention earlier about memory and stuff.. it mean something not right
not sure the image related to this problem.. tried make sample image with same size.. and tried added it..
and as you mention about image.. I'm not sure the problem on tileset/charset etc related
too bad.. I were uninstall the program.. since my pc need a lot of space right now

Thank you @gundambison for the reply and suggestions! I did try reinstalling 2k3 as a first step, and it unfortunately didn't work.

When you suggest to replace the project rpg2003.exe with one from a fresh project, I assume you're actually referring to RPG_RT.exe? I believe rpg2003.exe is the executable for the editor, and it's not included in the project directory.

Funny enough, the game runs and I can play through all my battles with no errors. I only get this error when attempting to open up Troops or Battle Screen tab in the editor, so it seems like an editor bug.

The offset 00000608 can be very clearly identified as refering to the width of a graphic that has been loaded to memory as an instance of class TAuroraSheet.

Since we can see it just as that little number in the error, the actual pointer to the graphic's address is zero, which in turn means that an image needed to display the battle-layout in RPG2003's database (because it happens in troops and battlescreen) must've failed to load and the program, always have been broken as hell, hasn't properly handled the problem.

This includes backgrounds, windowskin and actors. It most likely could be that an animated battler somewhere in some pose or weapon may reference an image that doesn't exist in the game's folder or there are not enough battlers defined in database.

Thank you so much for the help everyone, with your advice I was able to get it resolved

Long story short, I recently made edits to my window skin and saved it as a 32-bit image which was breaking the editor Troops/Battle Screen.

Some important context that I failed to mention in the first post - I'm using the EasyRPG runtime as a replacement for my RPG_RT.exe, which allows me to use 32-bit images in my game. Usually it's not a problem for the editor, but the 32-bit images will show up blank. However in this case it was actually causing this error in the Troops/Battle Screen, but I didn't notice it at the time of updating the window skin because I haven't needed to access those tabs in a long time (and of course EasyRPG displays the images fine).

Anyway, @AkiraKotatsuhime when you said "window skin" it dawned on me that I had made that change recently and had totally forgotten about it.

Thanks for saving me the despair of starting over from an old backup and losing a bunch of work (which I was about to do)!.
