Well met all,

I am a longtime lurker who has finally decided to join in.

I go back all the way to RM 2003, stuck around with VX Ace for a long time until I pulled the switch on an upgrade to MV, and recently yo MZ. Crossing everything over from VX Ace to MV was fairly straightforward, but MV to MZ is a nightmare...

I learned RM on my own, mostly through trial and error. I would say I am medium-advanced, I have several functional but incomplete games under my belt. I MacGyvered using conditional switches and hidden items to make something that's not perfect but works. I never tackled scripts.

It all started as one game, then I had ideas for a sequel, then a prequel origin story, and then a side spinoff, and then a prequel spinoff... This has grown into an out of control saga :guffaw:

At any rate, I look forward to honing my craft amongst fellow enthusiasts.

Welcome!

Your story about coming up with an idea that turned into an uncontrollable beast of a project resonates with me XD this is just how it goes sometimes.
I hope the whole saga is a glorious success! Maybe you can talk to some of these local geniuses with their coding wisdom to see if there aren't any scripts or plugins that can take some of the work load down for you.
It's a wonderful community with a bunch of wonderful, helpful people and all they ask is that you include a screenshot when you want help with your game haha

Welcome to the forums! I check out tutorials but mostly learn through trial and error.

I appreciate the welcome, everyone :)

I'm curious about one thing, though -- I see we have a forum for completed games. Do some of you have gone to the trouble of copyrighting their original story? I mean, it would be slightly pissant to spend so many hours crafting something, only to have it ripped right off...

I dunno, but I feel like this community would eat people alive for stealing someone else's creation XD

I'm sure those who publish a game for profit probably copyright it. Personally, if I published a game for fun, I probably wouldn't bother with copyright. But then again, I'm not a very talented game developer, so maybe I'm just not worried because I know there's better stuff to steal than what I've made haha

Speaking in the context of US Copyright law, copyright is automatically granted to you when you create the work that can fall under said law.
So if for example you write a story or draw a picture, the copyright is already given to you, assuming it doesn't infringe on the rights held by another person. You can register it with the U.S. Copyright office, but that's not a requirement for it to be legally recognized. Registering simply gives easier and greater protections.

I have zero doubts a plagiarist would be crucified on the public place

I was curious because I often wanted to have beta testers for the project that is numbered 1 so "officially" the first game, but I've always been leery to do so because of copyright and IP protection.

Updated my game's development post with the first video of it in action!

'Milestone Get!' :p
Heh, heh. I've been experimenting with a naughty word detector Common Event and using scripts to check certain strings. I never thought I would see such language in computer code. I would post a screen shot, but it probably wouldn't be appropriate, even with a Spoiler. But it certainly makes me laugh and it works great.
Yknow what? Im seriously considering recruiting a manager to oversee my games development.
Because I cannot focus or complete these tasks by myself. I need someone to give me orders, without having them be my boss.
