wow that's amazingly good report. (a little thing about the bear shop, its purpose is that he overprices all items in 2 times their price i believe? hinted by his dialog , so its like a way for you to have a easier way through the third biome using all that unused money. permanent stuff are only with grapes)
you caught couple of the things i was going to mention too, so gonna scratch those on my next feedback lol.

Yep, apparently permanent upgrades are only those bought with grapes... haven't been able to get any yet, so I'm wondering for how much longer I'll be able to survive, and what will happen exactly when my party is obliterated...

I'm gonna give it another try now, hopefully from where I left it if the save disn't dissapear

Question about Mini-Regen upgrade
In the Boss Fight (harpy) for the first area I noticed smth odd regarding the mini-Regen upgrade, don't know if by design: bought the mini-regen upgrade from the Bazzar, but the Fighter is healing for less than all other chars with that regen. Didn't manage to take a screenshot, but it was smth like Fighter heals for 9HP and others for 13HP each turn or smth like that (not speaking of party healers heal, but the upgrade heal, don't know if it's fixed HPheal number or HP%).
Edit: never mind, I figured it's auto-regen goes by maxHP%. :LZScat:

The 'skeleton' and 'goat' monster/mini-boss sprites (map markers), for the mid-sections of each map, are much appreciated, same as level/area bosses like the harpy, to inform players of what's coming on and allow them to handle their own pacing /party formation /healing BEFORE the fight.

Witch robbery
I checked again, and I'm almost positive that after the $100 heal, now the witch is charging $200.
I believe this is an overlook: first heal $50, second heal $100, third heal should be $150, not $250, and the same with the prices curve. Is too steep, and I'm thinking in higher difficulties one will be forced to use the witch heals almost compulsorily. Anyway, food for thought.

I feel I lost some money. I just got a Tent 'cause I already had the 'First Aid' Relic (it's awesome that the game checks and acknowledges that, also via dialogue box). The tent is not awesome, but not terribly bad (appreciated, but would have appreciated a Lazarus Heart on top of that).
Perhaps an idea could be, when player has already unlocked the mini-regen buff and chooses the big donation, to make the old man give [Tent+Heart], or [Tent+Tent], or another mini-boost, like the mini-Def buff, even if it's more expensive, just to reward the payer for their generosity and kindness towards the poor old man.
Oh well... let's call it the good deed of the day. Moving on.
Oops, one death!
1684792930877.pngI just lost the Pickpocket (as usual) in the fight against the 4 monkeys, so now I'm in a terrible dilemma: what item to use exactly, in the context of a scarcity of items? I know Tent restores party to full health, but does it also revive them, like the "witch heal"??? [item description doesn't say]

Without knowing precisely if the Tent also revives dead chars, it's terribly anxiety-inducing to have to decide this: if I use the Lazarus Heart and it turns out the Tent would have also revived dead chars, then I wasted a precious Heart; if I use the Tent and it turns out it doesn't revive chars, and I have to either spend a fortune on a "witch heal", or also use a Heart, then I wasted a precious Tent.
The lesson being: please inform the player more, with a line for the Tent in item description, like: "Does not revive fallen heroes" OR "Heals the party AND ALSO revives fallen heroes". Same for the Heart, a couple more words like "Revive's a fallen party member (hero wakes with 1HP)", or smth like this, very specific.
Ok, time for the mid-level goat monster mini-boss
Just for the sake of masochism, I was tempted to use the Vixen (and see how she almost never charms, or dies immediately, or when manages to charm the monster dmg output is reduced to 2 points...) but I think I'll try the Pyromancer (presently 80HP lol).

Manticore! Almost obliterated me! (nice design for the attacks, with the poison and all, as suits a classic Manticore). Pyromancer's Burning DOT dmg is too low! just 8HP! Having in mind how weak the Pyromancer is, I'd make her more attractive by increasing the burning dmg significantly a bit!

Also, just $10 for defeating the dreaded Manticore seems a bit low! I think you're missing a zero or two for the reward...

The Assassin is too weak!
So, I had tried only once the Assassin in the first Vainilla run (without Evil Shards) and found him even squishier than the Pyromancer and Vixen, reason for which I didn't use him again until now. This time, with the 20%HP Upgrade, he had just 100HP. The turtles do 40dmg each so 120dmg/turn. The Assassin managed to hit ONCE this battle (for 10dmg >:(... the Poison DOT is correct and proper, 60HP for the turtle) but he was immediately obliterated. A High Evasion Chance for the Assassin would make him more attractive to use.

Also, I find it necessary or at least polite to inform the player in this char description how much is the Poison Damage Over Time value (20% iirc)-

So the ONLY way to make him somewhat useful and attractive to use is to give him a 50% Evasion Chance (as befits an Assassin), otherwise he's infuriating... look what his death costs me!

Also, this heal is WAY overpriced! Last one costed $250, this one should cost $300!

Suggestion: Please inform the player about it in the item description text - "Heals the Party AND revives fallen chars" (so one knows it's the same as the Witch Heal).

Oh! Just found a (bonus) Yellow Slime! Thank you! It's great you include this kind of 'bonus' monsters, very much needed. With this one, I've gathered like 2 grapes for this run, so, appreciated.

What if I don't pay?
Presently, I've always been able to pay my Loan debt... and I'm curious as to what happens when one doesn't. However, I'm to afraid/lazy to try it out, if it implies a game over where I have to do the whole run again or I loose the Bazaar forever... hopefully it's just a mini-boss tough fight, but with the Bazaar still being an option (i.e. not disappearing forever), or smth as dreadful like an instant game over.

The Duelist seems very nice, it's basically a Fighter but with survivability (252HP) and same attack value (60dmg) but twice...
I'm wondering how does he interact with the Sandals Relic, where each char attacks twice :popcorn:

Oh! Just tried it out! He attacks for 60x2 the same enemy! Thought he attacked twice for 60, but two different enemies, 'cause he's a Duelist.

So, I read again the Item Description Text on the Inventory and the Bazaar Description for the same item. There's a DISCREPANCY regarding text.
The Inventory description says "act an extra time per turn"
The Bazaar description reads "act an extra time at the beginning of each battle".
Only one can be true.

But there's another problem. In my past Feedback I mentioned some chars were acting accordingly with the Sandals description (like the Elf High Healer, which heals twice as she should) but other chars are not recognizing the Sandals: Protector and Soothsayer, for example, are Not acting twice each turn, nor at the beginning of battles. In other words Sandals are not working on all chars.

It was tough with the werewolves dealing 40x2 each, each turn, plus the Regen Buff they have, plus the Feather Whatever buff (what is it?) all enemies have now. Tough fight: only possible with some relics, like Sandals (even if they only work on some chars) and TWO healers.

I'm seeing wonderful strange things reaching this area in the NG+ with 2 Evil Shards.
First, I'm seeing the Bear Shop, even when last time I was in the beginning area I didn't have enough Grapes to buy him again, which I'm guessing means that, once unlocked, he stays unlocked! If this is the case, that's the way to go! It was SO expensive to unlock, he should be there always!!

Ok, this run was fun, extremely hard at the beginning with my rotten luck (got almost all children killed, and Vixen and Fighter as first unlocked chars, and lost ALL money to that DAMNED Gob Gob! Please let us fight him to get our money back! LOL)
But it was somewhat manageable, with utter care and patience, and extremely careful use of money (the $500 Loan WAS compulsory).

Hi again! :kaohi:So I took a small break and now I'm starting the Evil Shard x3 run.

Already glad to see there's new things! (I appreciate much Random Events and "New weird / interesting stuff" for each new run, to keep the player interested (having to clear the same world map at least 5 times without new different stuff happening might be a bit tedious, despite difficulty curve or whatever).

I was going to suggest precisely that, more Random Events, and even more "?" spots, even if they don't have any mechanical/progression function (could be just small funny dialogues, idk, relating the different chars background story or smth) but more "?" POIs or NPCs like this one (?) to keep us interested while grinding the world map several times.

Don't know if already mentioned it, but it's SO very important, and polite, and good design, to inform and remind the player all the time of these things, like merchants relocating so last chance before the 1st boss, etc. Compliments on that.
So far EvilShardx3 Run has been manageable (almost had Mage and Cleric murdered by the crazy powerful monkeys, in those groups of 3 and 4, but fortunately they didn't target them so often... one more hit and party obliterated).

It was a very interesting fight! Thanks to the equipped Relics, and the good healer, it was possible. Without a nice healer would have been impossible!
I also like the battle spoils! Feel rewarded, and as difficulty ramps up, these will be necessary!

P.S. Importante Note: Choosing between Chests and New Heroes, even if one ends up not using them, is so odd.
I chose a Chest (possibly $1000+1Grape and didn't get anything, $200 or smth, so made me feel choosing chests instead of heroes is a mistake.
Perhaps an idea, to make chests more interesting, could be to raise the possible prizes, adding some items or random relics or smth)

Nice! Treant and babies! :3 was manageable!
Some attacks, like Leaf Cuts I think, did +100DMG! When the 3 babies did the AOL attack consecutively, felt almost unfair.
Didn't mind at all they have Heal! It goes with the Treant/Plant theme. However, I was amazed than, when I killed to baby treants,
the Big Treant didn't summon another baby to replace it...
I wouldn't touch anything from this Boss, except that, Mom Treant should have a Baby Treant Summon skill.
For the rest it was manageable without healer, for my astonishment. Not EASY, but possible. Don't increase their dmg imput!!

Nothing... well, guess the Cleric recruit and then the Upgrades for each (Fighter, Cleric, Mage) will be implemented in v0.8
(seriously tho', it'd be SO NICE to be able to permanently upgrade those three weaklings, like with the Children, to make them really shine, even if it takes some grind-runs for Grapes: 1st Upgrade for each could be just HP/Dmg/Df, but 2nd Upgrade could be about making them better in combat: example, Mage LvL 3 adds some status -sleep, confusion, smth- to his basic attack, Cleric LvL 3 adds Regen to her basic heal, 2x attack for the Fighter each turn, etc. would be really nice!)

I'm so impressed with the idea of permanent char progression with the grapes, and being able to finally recruit Fighter, Mage and Cleric (well, Cleric is missing but I'm sure u have her planned for v.0.8), AND progress them too, live level them up.

I'm wondering, what will happen now with 4 Evil Shards? Will the difficulty curve turn already impossible?

* Gift Giver furry gave me again the "Light Curtain" Relic. Does he always gift that same relic? I was expecting "Heavy Curtain", or "Sandals" for this Last Run! LoL. Not that it matters that much, but still, just curious, does he always give the same gift?
* Ok I found smth odd for the first time: repeated chars! Cleric AND Cleric!

In the first forest area, the merchant-bandit was selling Cleric, but also the "random char POI" from that area gave me a Cleric. Don't know if that's by design, or if you wanted chars to be unique/not repeated. Just so you know
* RunEvilShardx4 does feel much more challenging in the first area! Before the Harpy mini-boss, I already had to use 2 Revive Hearts and at least 2 Healing Juice. Managed to beat the Area Boss Harpy, but barely survived (with this weak party anyway).
* So, for the first Blessing after the 1st area, took 5th party member. Now this is my party, and they're managing, but hardly!
(that Cleric is SOOO weak sometimes, even with the "Light Curtain" Relic equipped, she barely survives against groups of fairies...).

* In difficulty EvilShardx4, the wizard died with just two turtle bites. So this will be my third Revive Heart used on this run. Which makes me think: the Tent also reviving chars IS A MUST! Runs would be absolutely unbearable without the Tent healing and also resurrecting ppl, with just the steep prices of the Witch. So, kudos for thinking of that. At least 3 accesible sources of revival are needed: witch, tents, hearts.

* For the random event in the desert I got the nice Magic Tower for the red mage again. Just noticed all objects in this mini-map have some description, except the crystal ball! :kaoswt:

fortunately, when re-entering the tower, I could find her in the same usual spot!!!

Since in a previous run I chose the Single Enemy attack (Gravit-one), and since the dmg is adjusted for bosses (which is only informed AFTER you have already made the choice :distrust:), just for the sake of testing I'll try the AOE attack (Gravit-all) for this most difficult run... :rock-left::D:rock-right:
hope I don't regret it.
* A minor thing regarding these spell names: for consistency I'd use either "Gravitonall and Gravitonone" OR "Gravitall and Gravitone".

please don't nerf Sandals/don't make this enemy more difficult: it felt nice to be 'acknowledged' by the game instead, for carefully positioning party members, learning the relics, and planning party setup and equipment. Yey! Felt like a nice victory (well, if you'd think about reducing that OP dmg from Medusa's rock throw, then more HP for this miniboss would be ok).

Final Verdict: FANTASTIC GAME CONCEPT!!! HUGE POTENTIAL!
Just needs MUCH POLISHING for the details (e.g. review all the tile restrictions, aesthetics, balance, random event variety), and you'll have an RPGMaker Masterpiece!!!
I appreciated much the work, ideas and concepts behind it. The essentials are already there for a great game!!!
Please do consider changing the current placeholder animations (for visual consistency with the retro pack), and do give a thought to the many things I mentioned.

I'm playing your game while there's progress on another I'm following, that uses the same retro pack! :kaojoy:Thanks for sharing!

A very interesting, strange, and super fun concept! I'm thankful to see more of this 8-bit pack, at least some char portraits, tile-sets, enemies etc.

(Oof! speaking of enemies, some of them hit like a truck and feel A BIT TOO RNG! Like those groups of 4 monkeys hitting for 40HP or more TWICE! EACH! if they all randomly focus on one or two chars, they're totally obliterated in a turn, so I'd have the Witch or someone sell more Tents and Reviving Hearts, or also make Tents and Hearts random rare battle drops). You already have white and red skulls on the map to somewhat point out difficulty. I'd appreciate some green ones in possible, to simbolize ''easy'' battles (not like there's any truly 'easy' battle, but you know)

Oh! I've only found ONE revive heart. Is this by design? Fortunately so far I have not needed more!


I have much feedback, but so far, just couple ideas:
* Liked the music. Always disliked that Menu "accept" sound, it's so high-pitched, and one has to hear it so often all the time while in the menu for items and party formation, that ends up making my ears bleed!!! :kaoswt: lol (no, seriously, another ''accept'' sound would be a great change :kaocry:
* Why not use the packs' animations instead? I know animations are not the games' focus or anything but felt so odd not seeing the animations from the pack.
* Witch: I believe healing price jumped from $200 to $500! if so, a bit too pricey.
* I stopped playing with the four starting "child" chars a while ago, but they are just standing there in the party rooster without purpose... I'd try to give them some use or smth, for instance:
- sacrifice one of them to the witch in exchange for one full party heal
- sacrifice one of them to the bandit dealer/loaner in exchange for the $1000 loan payment
- sacrifice one of them to the bandit dealer/loaner in exchange for another char ($200) or a Discount (as part of payment) for a good char like the gunslinger or smth
- sacrifice one of them in exchange of a tent
- sacrifice one of them to Gob Gob for the $500 bet, speaking of which...
* Gob Gob dice is rigged!!!:kaolivid: I bet $1000 with the ****ing bastard, $100 each time. The damn clown ALWAYS got 5 or 6! He won every single time! There should be a third dialogue option after losing, which is to fight GobGob mini-boss and get the money back!
LoL :kaoangry: aside from that I appreciated that scene, and the mechanics and game concept.

I've recruited these chars so far and I like them all:

I haven't died, so I have not used the Grapes for upgrades.
The Cleric is super squishy! all my healing potions are consumed by her all the time.
The Assassin feels like a 'Child' char, even with the poison, almost never use him 'cause he feels too weak, idk, too dull, but giving him a High Evade chance would make him much more attractive.

Regarding dialogue, I found it hilarious and refreshing! Fit for this game concept :kaojoy:

I would 'hide' some rewards in them! just to reward idiotic players who, like me, are trained by decades of classic RPGs to EXPLORE everything, click on EVERY SINGLE thing on maps, just like I did on yours trying to find some hidden secrets! for instance, you could place somewhere on these minipas, idk, some healing potions, a reviving heart, some money on those tree stumps, something. Just an idea, to make these little maps more interesting-

Well, some ideas on the Vixen class...
I love the idea of the Vixen charming enemies, but she's too weak! She's always dying!
Not only her skill is single target, but not always works! This was a battle where the Vixen could have been of great help IF:
* her skill would target all enemies with at least 50% chance of charming them
* her charm spell would last for more than 1 turn (make it at least 3 turns, she's so weak!)

I don't think I'll be using much the Vixen: either she dies always, OR, when miraculously she manages to actually charm someone, then it's immediately killed by another party member so, useless... it'd be really helpful if she would act first always, before ANY other char, AND her charm skill would be AOE, and the status effect lasted a bit longer, imho.

Found a Bug! (I think!)
Not sure if a Bug or an overlook, but bought the super expensive $1000 Sandals at the Bazar, that make party members act TWICE at the beginning of each turn, however the Protector is always acting only ONCE! Despite all other chars acting twice as intended by this rather expensive sandals!

Aha! Here they are! The super expensive sandals! They're not working properly! It says "all party members act an extra time PER TURN!!" however what I'm experiencing is they act twice JUST ON THE FIRST TURN of the battle, AND not all of them, like with the Protector (who doesn't even act twice on the first turn). Something weird is happening there with the sandals!

Well, to be fair she went down rather quickly... I'm always hesitant to give any feedback to many anything harder in games (there's already a widespread trend to make everything ''super hard'' for the ****ing sake of it), but in this case what happened was that FOR ONCE rng gods were in my favor, i had all the relics, and all heroes targeted the necromancer in succession so my advice would be: DON'T make her ''harder'', don't increase her HP, don't decrease the heroes attacks, JUST make it impossible to hit her BEFORE killing the zombies, like a zombie wall; once rid of them, then make it possible for heroes to target her, and she can summon more zombies or smth every 3 turns or smth. Just my two cents)

Well... with the LOAN AND some masterful playing AND buying the Protector and Soothsayer AND the small 5PH regen AND paying the robbing Witch *****, I managed to return my party from the brink of death, and perhaps will survive a bit more, but what will happen when the difficulty curve rises again? How much grind will be needed to get some grapes and make the party semi-resilient to survive reasonably?

well, gotta rest now a little, played your game too many hours straight (also part of the feedback!).
before i leave, another great idea could be to change somehow the world music for each area; since it's a semi-open world you're using, I'm unsure on how to achieve easily (perhaps with that Yanfly plugin for areas/terrain/smth? or via events or somehow? so there's a little varierty for the music, much needed for the grind in the NG++ etc. and then you have some nice track for the first forest area, another one for the desert, etc.).

Thank you so much for the super in-depth review/response. I really appreciate it! I read this the day you posted but have been meaning to respond and hadn't found the time (I recently became a parent and the human pupa consumes all time like a black hole consumes light).

The next update which I am working on will be a major departure from the previous version in that instead of a world map you walk around, it will be more similar to a traditional rogue-like path structure where you will have to make decisions such as do you go for a healer and a chest of gold or do you fight an enemy and recruit a character?

I also intend to implement a choice of 2 characters anytime you recruit a character and will be replacing the music with more retro themed music.

For the animations, I have the retro packs but the animations need to be assembled frame by frame and I haven't gotten around to starting that process.

It will be a few weeks before I am able to complete and release the next iteration but all your feedback will be taken into account. Thank you again for taking the time to play and give such detailed feedback, it is monumentally useful.

In the first forest area, the merchant-bandit was selling Cleric, but also the "random char POI" from that area gave me a Cleric. Don't know if that's by design, or if you wanted chars to be unique/not repeated. Just so you know
* RunEvilShardx4 does feel much more challenging in the first area! Before the Harpy mini-boss, I already had to use 2 Revive Hearts and at least 2 Healing Juice. Managed to beat the Area Boss Harpy, but barely survived (with this weak party anyway).
* So, for the first Blessing after the 1st area, took 5th party member. Now this is my party, and they're managing, but hardly!
(that Cleric is SOOO weak sometimes, even with the "Light Curtain" Relic equipped, she barely survives against groups of fairies...).

* In difficulty EvilShardx4, the wizard died with just two turtle bites. So this will be my third Revive Heart used on this run. Which makes me think: the Tent also reviving chars IS A MUST! Runs would be absolutely unbearable without the Tent healing and also resurrecting ppl, with just the steep prices of the Witch. So, kudos for thinking of that. At least 3 accesible sources of revival are needed: witch, tents, hearts.

Since in a previous run I chose the Single Enemy attack (Gravit-one), and since the dmg is adjusted for bosses (which is only informed AFTER you have already made the choice :distrust:), just for the sake of testing I'll try the AOE attack (Gravit-all) for this most difficult run... :rock-left::D:rock-right:
hope I don't regret it.
* A minor thing regarding these spell names: for consistency I'd use either "Gravitonall and Gravitonone" OR "Gravitall and Gravitone".

Also (minor detail, not important but) in the inventory the 4 shards remain broken (meaning not 'crafted' by the fairy into the said blessing):
perhaps it'd be an idea to make the game check for those 4 shards, and replace them with whatever artifact/blessing the drunk fairy made!!
(also item descriptions missing for grapes and evil shards and blessing/artifact made of them!)

Ok, ALMOST died with that crazy succession of AOEs from the Evil God!!!
I'd say, give the evil god much more HP to make the fight longer, BUT reduce the exaggerated dmg output AND so many AOEs in succession, or do smth to pace more the battle! Cool battle anyway! YEY!

Final Verdict: FANTASTIC GAME CONCEPT!!! HUGE POTENTIAL!
Just needs MUCH POLISHING for the details (e.g. review all the tile restrictions, aesthetics, balance, random event variety), and you'll have an RPGMaker Masterpiece!!!
I appreciated much the work, ideas and concepts behind it. The essentials are already there for a great game!!!
Please do consider changing the current placeholder animations (for visual consistency with the retro pack), and do give a thought to the many things I mentioned.

OMG I somehow had missed your two review sequels and just read them both! Funny story! Gob Gob ALWAYS rolls a 5 or 6 (50/50 chance) but your roll is standard (equal chance to roll any number between 1-6) so it IS designed to be basically impossible, but when I first tested it, I won in the first try... I was like... OK I probably programmed something wrong? I restarted and got him again, without making any changes and ALSO beat him on the first try at which point I was absolutely convinced I programmed him wrong. After about 30 mins of looking at his script, I could not figure out what I did wrong and put him on the backburner "todo" list.

So I kept play testing without making any changes to him and then proceeded to never be able to beat him again XD As far as I can tell, I got stupid lucky the first two times I beat him. He is seriously a pain. I do agree that I should make him "fightable" but maybe make him strong, or unlock the ability to rob him if you have specific characters in your party like the pickpocket. I will implement this in the next iteration.

All of your feedback makes sense to me, theres SO MUCH to respond to and so little time. Walking through the volcano is a bug, seeing a cleric when you have one is a bug, yes enemies should give more grapes. I will make notes of all your feedback and implement it. Oh it SHOULD let you recruit the Mage for free? I think? If not that is a bug, it saying it costs money is certainly unintended.

Thank you so much for the super in-depth review/response. I really appreciate it! I read this the day you posted but have been meaning to respond and hadn't found the time (I recently became a parent and the human pupa consumes all time like a black hole consumes light).

The next update which I am working on will be a major departure from the previous version in that instead of a world map you walk around, it will be more similar to a traditional rogue-like path structure where you will have to make decisions such as do you go for a healer and a chest of gold or do you fight an enemy and recruit a character?

I also intend to implement a choice of 2 characters anytime you recruit a character and will be replacing the music with more retro themed music.

For the animations, I have the retro packs but the animations need to be assembled frame by frame and I haven't gotten around to starting that process.

It will be a few weeks before I am able to complete and release the next iteration but all your feedback will be taken into account. Thank you again for taking the time to play and give such detailed feedback, it is monumentally useful.

Fixed visual bug where Reaper did not disappear after defeat explosion effect.
BUG that froze game once all characters recruited SHOULD now be resolved.
Visual issue resolved when Money event rolled in Volcano area causing money event to look like Bowman.
Text fix here "an" dark shard or "an" Rusted Antique was being used.
BUG where white fox character in starting town could be used multiple times addressed.
Meadow spot now shows Red when it can be entered.
Vampire event was giving Gloom recruits hurt. Fixed so they join at full health.
Grape purchases made more expensive since Grapes are now provided much more generously.
Skeletons in Graveyard can now move.

Proper localization into several languages on a commercial rpg project might be one of the best signs that the developer is super invested into making the game something high effort, because it ain't cheap to hire good translators.
6 hour drive back from Florida and I was able to plan out 6 mini game Common Events for my Game Jam entry, including a new one I hadn't thought of before. Also had some new ideas to improve what I already have and the post game options to continuing playing the mini games that you liked or didn't get to try. Pretty productive drive.
