I would have joined, but I am afraid that I stumbled upon this topic too late. Ah well. ((I do love to draw and write and I've an idea for a Visual Novel.))

I may as well officially sign up, but I was asked privately.  I'll be writing and designing something specifically for this to go with my workshop.  Needless to say Jayce and Stacy will have a detective case to work out.

This reminds me, awhile back I was working to implement an event system through common events, that would allow the show pictures to move about more like in a visual novel engine, while also being able to change outfits and expressions as they moved.

The latter required a slight modification to the script, and had to be made through a call script, but it worked very well.

I also bounded each character, outfit and expression to their own variables, so all I had to do to change the picture was to alter the number for a specific variable and launch the common event.

Another thing that I did was make sure that all of the expressions were arranged in the same way, but kept in their own conditional branches.

So '00' on the expressions variable would be neutral, where '01' would be a smile, regardless of the character or outfit selected.

A couple other things I added were character reactions, like causing them to jump or sink down with the picture move command.

Unfortunately, I never got around to finishing that game, and moved onto another project. ^_^;

I have a lot of ideas that I'm looking at making, but haven't gotten around to drawing the graphics or getting the script down for them yet.

I am however interested in seeing how these come out, so I'll be sure to follow the thread for now. :)

It's never too late~
Em... Well you did say, if I am not mistaken, that we'd need a completed script and//or all of the art assets ready by the end of this month, which is hastily approaching. It'd be a miracle if anyone who started at this point could fulfill that request in the time limit. I have ideas, but nothing tangible yet - so therefore it'd be clearly improbable that I'd finish on time.

Hey, I got a full script written in 6 days when I read about this.  Starting from no ideas.  Might as well give it a shot, maybe you can at least get a first draft done in the time.

And if not, you can always use the script later on, for another project, right?

I'd say go for it.

My script is almost finished, and from what I can tell, 1 hour of gameplay equals ~25 MS Word pages written in Calibri 11.

I had to come up with a completely new story for this "contest" and I'm not a native English speaker, so writing 25 pages in a foreign language isn't that easy, but I still get at least 3 pages done each day. If English's your native language, you can probably write 5 pages in 1-2 hours every evening and get done just fine.

If you have 1 hour of script done, you won't need any art assets done in November, as far as I understand it.

The real problem will be the second deadline in December.

I wrote a very short mystery novel set in a prison, so the setting doesn't change that much. Still, even then I ended up needing ~20 backgrounds and at least 4 scene pictures. Drawing a good HD background will take several days, if not weeks, so I think that's where many people will just give up, even with a finished script.

If you can draw, you might find an easy way to do many of of them, but another idea would be to find another project that sounds good and tag along. I imagine there will be many people asking for help from other artists next month.

Sooo... Just saw this thread and I feel like an idiot for not checking sooner, as just today I was talking with a friend about the limitations of rpgmaker regarding VN implementation. It's almost certain I won't be able to get anything done in time (freelancing can be frantic, at times) but, just in case, when exactly is the deadline? Also, thanks for what I think may be a lifesaver down the line, if you are doing what I think you are doing.

Ideally I want the game script done already so when the 'testing' finally happens it's just pure development time.

In case I need to post here as well: I am definitely interested and have a script/assets (some assets, not all are done yet) ready to go for this.

I might be too late for this but is it still okay to send a script in? I've had trouble figuring out how to write it but I'm definitely interested in this

Is it too late or can I still pm later when it's written?

If you're having trouble formatting a script, Trelby is a good free program for script writing.  It takes a little bit to get the hang of using, but it's a nifty program.

http://www.trelby.org/

I believe we will be given resources to work on the project ourselves, is Archeia's plan, so the important thing is to format it in a way that you'll understand yourself. :)

I've got a question: I have a great idea for a visual novel, and I'd provide the art. But the thing is, I can't do the backgrounds. At least, not alone. Can I still join with only character art?

As Sharm pointed out, you can free resources for visual novels on the internet, the only problem is that you'd have to write the story in a way that only uses those backgrounds:

If art is the only limitation, there is quite a bit of free to use stuff out there, mostly over at Lemmasoft.  It wouldn't be original to your VN and you'd have to write around what's available, but there's some really high quality stuff to be found.

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
