Recently, I started working on pixel art again after deciding to start making my own resources for future projects. I won't say I'm a complete beginner to pixel art ( I started in 2009 when I started editing Phantasy Star IV's cutscenes for fun ) but I'm far from being as good as I'd want to be, since it was never a regular practice of mine.

So, I decided to make this thread to keep track of my progress. My goal is to one day create an entire tileset to make a small RPG with. I freehand everything with a mouse, which can be a bit tricky because I don't use my dominant hand. In a way, I'm sort of ambidextrous. Draw with the left, pixel/colour/shade with the right.

Scenes: I started on this around 2 or so days ago.

48 colours.

Still a WIP.  80 colours.

Separate images:

First need to finish up all that trees and foliage...

I'm welcome to C&C.

With a little tweaking these could be battle backs too. Very cool. You should remove the pillow shading and try a little hue shifting in your ramps, it'll add a lot of life to these.

Yeah, I am experimenting with hue shifting as well, and like most pixel artists who start out, I am guilty of the dreaded 'pillow-shading'. Need to break that habit. Maybe in a few months I could release some stuff as resources ( for ReStaff ).

Oh my god! These are amazing Luchi! Why do you say they're not that good? Trees = Pretty! Backgrounds = *faints in amazement!*

Have my 50th post as a reward!

Pillow shading is a lot easier to avoid if you've got a clear light source and keep it in mind as you shade.  I find it useful to get the basic feel of light and shadow down first before I go into details.

Here's a fun tool for getting a good ramp.  I've never used it myself, but it's still really fun to play with and you can learn a lot just by looking at it.

I wasn't happy with the shading on the smaller tree, so I fixed it up a bit. Think I may have got rid of most of the pillow shading this time, since I made my light source come in from the left. May need to add a few more

highlights though.

Much improved! Remember that you don't have to have every step of your ramp between colors, sometimes you can and want to have the darker shades right next to the lighter ones. It doesn't necessarily need more highlights, I think a bit of noise reduction and focusing on getting those little spots to imply leaves would be a good idea.

Pretty much making custom resources for the whole of Vol II of Enelysion. New sprites, battlers, tilesets, the works. Rear view battlers are rarer than hens teeth on the RM scene.

No lol I wasn't mad at you I was just going insane cause you said in resource index and I could not see it for the life of me and thought it was the one you have with the trees etc. Sorry. But its going to be used to a good cause. A scene of a character on an island overlooking the ocean and wanting to go home with seagull sound effects playing and the song "Courtship" starting at 2:54 from Disney's Dinosaur movie. If you put them together tell me that's not one emotional mixture for a great scene! Thanks Luchi! Nice game btw =)

Wow... after using them both the sunset one with trees and that random wall you built look a hell of a lot better. Cant believe I waited for the worse one lol. Im still using it for other parts but that first one is great. I wish you made a beach below instead of that wall. Good job though Luchi!

Getting things together. The only thing that isn't mine in this screen is the ground tile, which is REFMAP's. And yes... down that parallax road go I.

Good thing is, the least beautiful asset in this pic is what you haven't done yourself ;) .

As much as I love this, going to Parallax you're actually betraying your faith of tileset mapping. XD

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
