So, I'm editing a RPG Maker XP game that was originally made in Japanese (mainly for the purposes of translating), but I've very quickly run into a problem. All of the switches, variables, and most importantly the dialogue text that were originally written in Japanese are nothing but question marks. I then noticed that even if I were to manually copy-n-paste a Japanese character into the text, it would immediately change into a question mark (this is shown in the attached picture). Also, if I open up the game in play test mode or regular, the text is completely invisible. I have a Japanese font pre-installed on my computer, so I don't think that's the problem.

So what do I have to do to get the Japanese text to display properly? I did try changing my computer's language settings to Japanese, but that didn't work at all. Also, I'm on Windows 10.

Thank you in advance!

P.S. I did look all around on Google and these forums first to see if someone had already found the answer to this problem, but I couldn't find it, so if it's here and I missed it, I'm sorry!

Chances are that the editor was made with stipulations for the use of either a single font or a range of fonts within. They would govern every dropdown, textbox and main editor forms. This would not be something that can be edited or changed. The only feature that would accept Japanese text is the Scripts Editor as it's set up for Unicode.

I was able to get Japanese text into the database and any event commands that used text (Show Text, Show Choices, etc). I don't recall having to do anything special to make it work.

Maybe you just need to install a different font?

Actually, I think I might have realized what the problem is? But first, I should probably clarify my problem:

I don't want to be able to paste Japanese characters into the dialogue boxes, controls switches, etc.
I have an already completed game that I downloaded that was made in Japanese. Even though there should be a bunch of Japanese characters to sift through and translate, they're either question marks in the editor, or invisible in-game.

Anyway, though, I think I've figured out that the problem might be that I need the Japanese RTP for RPG Maker XP (I didn't realize there was a different runtime package). I downloaded said RTP from here: https://tkool.jp/support/download/rpgxp/rtp, but it doesn't seem to have done anything. I tried changing my location to Japan, but that didn't work either, so what do I need to make the Japanese RTP work?

The RTP affects the game when you're playing it, not the editor.

Is this game one that's open to other people editing it? Or have you hacked it to get at the project files?

Oh, crud, then that doesn't really help.

Well, I mean, the files weren't compressed, so I'm assuming that means it's fine to edit? Either way, I'm editing it for myself, it's not going up anywhere.
Also, even if I open the game normally (from a fresh download) and not through the editor, the text is still invisible.

All I can suggest is installing some fonts that have Japanese characters.

I'm not sure what you need to do to get the editor to USE those fonts - as I said, I don't recall having to do anything special.

Yeah, that's what's confusing me, my old laptop (Which is broken) had no problem with Japanese games like this. If I did anything special to that computer, I don't remember.
It's better than nothing, though, I'll start looking for different fonts to install.

As a site focused on helping people to make games, we do not normally help people with problems playing a game made by someone else.

I am, therefore, closing this.
