I am totally new to RPG maker so I have no clue how to approach this other than what I already tried.

Basically, I've set up a test room to play around with. What I want to create is an NPC that faces a bookshelf, turns to the player upon talking to him for the first time and then continues to face the bookshelf for all other dialogue that follows.

I'm quite possibly inept because I've been spending 2 days trying to figure this out and at this point, I am unsure if I need to use a custom script for this, as I have no experiences with that either!

Pls help. I'm dying inside.

That's relatively easy. Activate a Switch or something at the end of the first talk (of course, you'd have to do that anyway), then put the other lines on a second Event Page tied to that Switch, and enable the Direction Fix option for it.

Now the NPC turns back to the bookshelf after the first dialogue, but it turns back around to the player for the second dialogue and THEN the direction the NPC is looking at is being fixed in place.

there are several things mixed up here, and you'll have to sort that out.

1) by default, all events automatically turn toward the player as soon as the action button is pressed and they trigger.
2) to prevent that autoturn, you'll need to set direction fix on the event page where it should not turn
3) manual turning can be done at any time during an event by setting a move route for that event at that moment.

the exact solution depends on what the developer wants - should the player trigger the additional messages or not?

if all messages should be triggered at once, then it should be a single-page event, with the event turning toward the books before the second message.

if the player should need to press action button multiple times, then you'll need at least two pages - the first one with the autoturn and possibly a set move route to turn back before the other messages, the second page with direction fix to prevent autoturn and the rest of the messages.

If that does not help, we need a better description of the event.
And in that case please include screenshots of what you have so far.

Not too hard to perform. What you may have missed is the direction fix.

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
