A fantasy, adventure, JRPG.
After 500 years of unity, mankind had advanced technology further than what was ever imagined possible. World peace allowed humans to focus their efforts, resulting in their greatest achievement: the discovery of separate, strange dimensions. Through a series of unfathomable experiments, a method was devised which would merge these dimensions, giving rise to a new form of energy.

However, with this new energy, sparked desires thought extinguished. Nations frantically studied this energy, attempting to be the first... to create weapons of mass destruction unlike any every seen before. Having never seen this energy, called Seryl, no one knew how to defend against it. Hence, before they knew it, mankind had suffered Seryl Armageddon.

Now, centuries after this event, the surviving few have established themselves on a mysterious island, seemingly untouched by the warheads. Having vowed to never advance technology past what is necessary, mankind finds themselves in a perpetual age, similar to medieval times. But certain desires can not be extinguished. Manipulating Seryl in new and innovative ways, individuals unsuccessfully attempt to overthrow civilisation. However, it's only a matter of time before chaos takes over...

Story Synopsis

The Shadowcasters were able to summon clones, shadows, of themselves at will. Hell-bent on destroying civilisation, it seemed that there was none who could oppose them. None, that is, until the Bandits were formed.

After his home town was destroyed by the Shadowcasters, Rivel, at the age of 7, was taken in by Malice to be one of the leaders of his new organisation, the Bandits. But that was over a decade ago. The Bandits killed the last Shadowcaster a few years ago and since then the Bandits have served no purpose. At least, that's what Rivel thought...

After uncovering the dark truth behind the Bandits, Rivel flees for his life, only to stumble upon a magic he thought long gone...

Unwittingly, Rivel becomes a Shadowcaster...

Characters

Throughout the story, the perspective will switch between two protagonists: Rivel and Hornet. Rivel will be accompanied by his two shadows.

Hornet is part of MYST, a group of six comprised of the brightest and strongest in Malament. They're dedicated to stopping groups like the Shadowcasters, should any more arise.

(More character bios to come!)

Fare Ruin, a strange terminal lies outside.

A boulder puzzle in the current demo (don't expect many of these throughout the game).

Tensions rise between childhood friends.

Why, it's a Slime Staff of course! Along with some Concentrated Slime Goop and 6mL of that precious, precious Lucrum.

Rivel rockin' the Thief primary class with Cryomancer as the Magic, allowing him to flaunt that sweet Slime Cloak!
The World

The entire game is set in the continent of Lemuria. Lemuria is a continent primarily made up of a single island - Malament. Vast, dense forests and mountains occupy the landscape, with a few towns scattered throughout. The towns that do exist are governed by a group known as the Elite Vanguard, comprised of the continent's best lateral thinker, best fighter, an elected Tenenbra representative and a member of the Royal Bloodline (King or Queen). However, the current rulers are often distant from the people, the current King hasn't left his castle in years and the previous Queen disappeared.

(above, the continent of Lemuria)

Despite the tiny number of towns scattered across the continent, there is an abnormally large number of ruins. These are remnants of a time gone by, Before a vast series of events that left Lemuria desolate; unpopulated.

Fare Ruin, a strange terminal lies outside.
But the most iconic of all of the ruins are the remnants of the structures that utilised the many caves across Lemuria - the subterrion. Subterrion are large castles that were built underground.

The eerie Bocidia Subterrion (not available in current demo)
Surrounding Lemuria are the countless "Lost Lands" of the world. These are islands that have become inhospitable due to their irradiated nature. Nothing grows on these islands, and nothing lives on these islands... besides their legends, that is.

Humans aren't the only self-aware species to inhabit the continent. The small imp-like creatures known as the Domin Tenenbrarius (Tenenbra for short) are natives to the land, occupying a few mines around the place. Although their primary form of communication is through body language and facial expressions, they are able to learn and speak English.

Elves also occupy the continent, however, they are confined to the north side of Dyatlov Pass, mostly residing in Wintercrest Forest. There exists some racial tension between humans and the elves and they have been in a constant state of war for decades; although now they seem to just keep out of each other's way.
Lore

Very little is known of Lemuria's past, but that which is, is bleak at best. All documents of history have long since been lost, and attempts of recording current events are few to none. The only news that is passed from parents to children is through word of mouth.

A story goes of the King whose wife and child were murdered. There were rumours that one particular King would father a child destined to destroy Lemuria. And so, when the Queen became pregnant, the King did everything in his power to protect her from those that may attempt to harm the baby...

It was a stormy night on which the child was born, and it was taken as a very grim omen. Inevitably, an assassin showed to kill the baby. The countless royal guards situated by the Queens side... let him through. The King didn't make it to his wife's aid in time, and the assassin had disappeared without a trace. The head of the Royal Guard lost his, and the others were banished from the capital.
Features

Respawn instead of Game OverBecause game overs suck (lose nothing on death, but respawn at last respawn location).

Journal

A neat little feature that provides a space to record number and phrases that could potentially help to solve puzzles. There is also a dairy section which serves as a short retelling of the past events and current objectives.

Class and Subclass System

Physical classes such as thief and brute can only be equipped as primary classes, where magic classes can be equipped as primary and secondary classes.

On screen encounters

When walking through tall grass, enemies may appear and chase you. If they touch you, they will fight you.

Cartographer System (not available in current demo)

New locations can be accessed once their maps have been found or bought from a cartographer. The world map can only be accessed through physically leaving an area.

Unique Dungeons

Every dungeon will be different to some extent, not necessarily in appearance but always in content.

Secret Dungeon Bosses
(not available in demo)

They also drop unique loot! Each secret (and sometimes not so secret) boss has there own, unique (visually and effects-wise) set of equipment to be collected.

Enemy Levels

Enemy levels scale to the approximate level of the party. Each enemy has a max level (varies from enemy to enemy) in order for there to be some kind of incentive to level up.

Post Game Super Quests!

Sad that you've beat the main story and the game is pretty much over? Well sad no more! Upon completing the main storyline, very large side-quests will be accessible, which flesh out stuff that's grazed upon in the story.

Unique Equipment!

Each and every enemy has a set of equipment that they drop, which is unique to them! e.g. slimes have a small chance to dropping: Slime Cloaks, Slime Staffs, Adhesive Goop, etc.

Equipment Level Ups!
(not available in current demo)

A lot of equipment will be able to level up. Simply giving a blacksmith the required items will allow them to upgrade the hell out of those shoes!

Amazing Animations, Wondrous Weapons, Awesome Armour, Incredible Items, Such Skills, wow.

That's some actually nice but basic mapping you got there. Thats a good point for mee.

HOWEVER! The story description is a bit...chewy. Try to make a main header shorter and with more of a bang (try to imgaine it's one of those back of the book synopsis that make you go "wtf was that, i want to read this now". You can give extra details further down if you want, but having a shorter blurb as the main text will help. (Separate them in Synopsis/Lore for example.

Morethings....COLORS! Different Sizes for headers! It's all very arid to read once you get past the screenies :I Break some of the spoilers, make the headers colorful! And mayme stop with the centered text for the part that is not the main synopsis, it makes the text harder to read comfortably).

A distribution that works for me gamepage wise:

>Big fancy banner image/big title font<

Fancy blurb with small synopsis

More story details header (size+color)

-Blah blah story details

(if this runs too long you can put it in a spoiler, but if it's moderate (3-4 medium paragraphs) there's really no need).

Characters (size + color)

-IF applicable. DISPLAY THE GRAPHICS OF THE ACTUAL CHARACTERS HERE! (So mny peoplejsut leave text. Frog that, we want to SEE them.) (same as above, dont put ina  spoilr unless ir runs long)

Any extra lore-type stuff you may want to say (size+color)

-bla bla bla (same spoiler rules)

Screenshots (size +color)

This goes in a spoiler, yes (unless you have very few and they dont clutter the screen a lot).

Do not put multiple spoilers for the section if possible, it just feels bothersome to the viewer (one spoiler is enough. If they're for different situations simply put a cline of text saying that between them.)

Game details/Features (size +color)

-yadda yadda

Credits

THIS goes in spoiler. Most people won't care, so don't clutter the page.

Afterword/updates/anything extra

Always at the end of the page! Usually no need to put it in spoilers unless it's running very long.

AND I REALIZE I RAMBLED TO A POOR INNOCENT PASSERBY. I'm sorry I jsut get a bit tired of all these bland game pages, and this one has promising screenshots that sort of got left behind OTL Feel free to ignore me, I was just trying to help in the nosiest way possible XD

And hey, the game looks appealing enough so far (nice mappign is a big thing to me :I) If when you have a demo yu're up to someone dismantlying ad pickign it apart, poke me and I'll LP it.

Thank you Indrah! I really felt my post was a bit... underwhelming, and you've just told me why!

You're advice actually is very appreciated (I'm glad I passed by at the right time :p )

Uhh... My screen shows that the credits are in a spoiler... I might need to check that out :/

Rest assured that changes will be made!.. (tomorrow)

Yep, mapping so far is pretty good (it's always hard to find games with decent mapping), not everyone can manage to create good maps without parallax.

I'm not a fan of the generator faces but the game looks nice and interesting enough, I will keep my evil eye on it because I like all the features.

@Indrah:

I'm surprised you didn't mention anything regarding the amnesia thing, if I remember right, you hate this concept in games...ahah.

I couldnt be arsed to read such a long and arid stufff =_= That's exactly why i derailed with layout bits.

(And I get tired of saying the same things about cliches over and over XD Besides, I'm mre likely to forgive them when visually the game is not kicking me away with terrible maps)

The font you're using is way too small and hard to read. Since she's already here, Indrah will probably (maybe already has) tell you; using a cursive font for your game is a big no-no. And it doesn't matter if the concept of the game is cliche'd or not, simply how it's executed and how it stands out from the rest. So I'd suggest grabbing a better font so that people can read it and understand your game better without being turned off by the lousy cursive font. I'd recommend any kind of serif font, or anything that's basically readable; it doesn't have to be elegant, it just has to work, especially when showing off something.

News!

Added banners and stuff to the original post... Just generally made it better overall.

Characters Section has been added (more character bios to come)!

The font in the game has been changed to Alegreya-Regular which is much more easy to read than the cursive font displayed in the screenshots.

News!

Demo now available!

The play time is estimated to be around 60 to 90 minutes.

Check out the links above if you're interested! Feedback would be greatly appreciated!

edit: note that I may not be able to work on the game much these upcoming 10 or so weeks. I've been trying to get the demo up about a week before school starts so, as a result, some maps are yet to be parallaxed.

Haha, thanks Indrah! I've seen your LPs and I have to say, I've been readying myself XD

But seriously, I'm pretty sure I'll be able to take it!

Looking forward to your feedback :D

News! (It's been a while since I've typed that...)

Demo V 1.2 is finally uploading, a mere 5 months after the first demo.

However, the changes are astronomical! Cast aside any precious memories (yeah right) of the old M's Wellspring, it's dead and gone! V 1.2 is almost ready!

~ Demo's up!

Demo V.1.2.1 is now up.

A few bug fixes, but most noticeably, file size has been greatly decreased (171.34 MB down to 63.83 MB).

Progress update/what to expect in next demo v1.3:

Working on a few new places. First up is the next stop after Fare Cave - Blackwood North.

You could either spend 5 seconds here running through it and leaving Blackwood, or you could spend about 5 - 20 minutes exploring.

As soon as you enter, you'll come across the first unique monster in the game - the Flame Biulsion (Fire Slime). You can search around for 5 or so minutes trying to figure out how to actually fight the damn thing. The other thing to do in Blackwood North is head into Echo Cleft, where you'll find the second unique monster - the Wolf Sonat.

Upon heading through Blackwood North you're greated by the world map scene for the first time. From here you can head to the first town in your travels - Cassidy.

This secluded, small, mountain town is home to few. There's a blacksmith and his sister, the pub/hotel manager, and the staff that work there. However, as it is the only town in Lemuria with the means to sell alcoholic beverages, it attracts a lot of business.

~ Plus, refining current skills available and adding 30-something new skills.

~ Adding new equipment so every enemy in the game (besides first boss) drops unique stuff.

~ Fixing a few bugs.

You do a wonderful job with the non-parallax mapping. I'll throw this on my "to-play" list. :]

Small update/what to expect in demo v1.3:

Kid versions of Rivel, Hansel, Gretel and Sarah are ready for the new intro.

An updated look at Echo Cleft:

Also, first version of the world (continent of Lemuria) map:

Finally, you can expect a major dialogue update in the next version. I really want character's personalities to show and so a lot of work has gone into writing out scenes (I've got to a point where I go to a random scene, hide who's saying what, and read a random line. If I can't guess who's saying the line, I change it).

Hmm not much to show for these past couple of months (I'm in my final year of high school this year so, unfortunately, I don't have much free time. Oh well; gap year next year so I'll have plenty of time then :p  ).

If anyone wants to try out the current demo (v1.2.1) I'd be happy to hear any feedback  :)

I've decided to give your game a shot, seemed really nice from the screenshots.

I'll write down things as I notice them. Can't promise I'll play the whole game as I have to work on mine as well, but I'll try to give you some constructive feedback.

- Hooray! A reasonable file size! I'm so tired of demos that last 15 minutes and are 300+ MB because the creators stuff them with music they don't even end up using.

- You may want to implement mouse support - not really necessary or anything, but people usually like it. Didn't take me too long, there's plenty of good scripts.

- Mapping's a big plus - the outside map looks great and the inside one, while a bit barren, does the job perfectly.

- The music's matching the atmosphere really well as well.

- Bandit Grunt is wearing modern clothing... looks a bit out of place.

- Those tree walls look pretty bad, as the bottom of them is way, way too dark. I'd make it a gradient of some sort.

- Thief is misspelled in the class menu.

I need 5 wood to build the bridge or I can't go further and I only have 4... I looked for more for like 10 minutes - am I blind or is it a bug?

I stopped there, as I didn't save before and had no clue on how I can get more wood. Probably I'm just blind or really unlucky if there is a random amount of wood you can get from a log.

Also, I ran into this bug:

I don't know what it is or how to fix it, but it popped up quite a lot. You may want to look into that.

Overall I have to say that I was kinda sad that I got stuck there, I was having a good time with it. The slime battles are kinda ''meh'', but the story seems promising and overall it's just fun.

I'll give it another try when I have more time. Maybe I'll notice what I did wrong next time.

Edit: Messed up up the spoilers. Ugh.

OMG! Thank you so much for trying out my game :D

Hmm, I think someone else said they were unable to get past the collecting wood point as well...

Here's where all of the logs are:

There are more past the river on the right.

I hope I haven't stuffed up somewhere in the demo and that they are all there (it seems to work fine when I do it).

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
