I have this thing about big things.. xD so i set my map dimensions to 300x300 later to find out it was reduced to 256x256..
so my question is, is it possible to make a map at about 500x500?
I really need the space.. :(
i don't wanna split up my map into 4 parts it just wouldn't look appealing to my taste
any help is appreciated n.n

basic answer - no, not stable (an old workaround to the limit has proven to create an instable game in addition to problems with the editor)

However, in our experience maps that large are usually not needed - just check the sample maps, the largest of the world maps there is 140x140 and that world is big enough for a 5-hour-game.

This "problem" of the map size limit has been discussed several times in the last two years (just search the forum), and so far no one has shown a good or completed game using maps that large, because large maps have several disadvantages as well (mainly that you need content to fill that map, no player is interested in running around empty maps)

You'd probably need a plugin for that. Although I'm not sure if one already exists.

But why would you need a map that is this large? I don't know of any game with such a big map.

Edit: Darn it, beaten by a few seconds... :eswt:

Yeah, I've actually got a small side project that involves making the entirety of a game on one full-sized MV map. It's a small game, granted, but a game nonetheless. This project includes multi-floor dungeons and enough space between maps that at no time are you able to see that other maps exist on the same one that you're on, giving the illusion of multiple maps.

That said, nine times out of ten, I find when I'm mapping for a regular game, I've made something uncomfortably large and had to squash things in so it feels more like a decent RPG. My suggestion to you would be make a 256x256 test map, populate it with some simple NPCs or objects to me barker points, make some basic things to go around and see how long it takes you to get from your own planned point A to point B. Throw in some random battles if you plan to have those on such a map. See how long it takes you to walk that. And I say walk because I'm 95% certain there are people out there that don't know you can dash.

If you are concerned by the transition between map you can still make it like in Pokemon. Divide your map in 2/3/4 or any number. Every borders of maps wich will be connect should have the same tiles (8 in mv). When you teleport the player remove the transition (and make him teleport on the same tile on the other map!).

The only downside is any events in these borders will pop up when you enter in the new map, so you have to never put in these connected borders events (or you'll need more coding).

This give the impression of being on a single map.

The only way to make it bigger is edit the .json file, and that is far from stable. That being said, you may wish to rethink why you think you need a map that big. Not even the final fantasies (6, 7, 8, or 9) had maps that big, so what makes you think you need a map that big?

I like working on big things in general and its more just for my World map
this game im working on will indeed be a big project and im just barely starting to work on the mapping after half a year of story planning, damage formulas, skills and the rest xD
If it'd be unstable i guess i wont do it I was just wondering if was possible o:
thank you all for the quick responses though :) really appreciate it

My world map looks like it's going to be 675x300. It's split up into different regions that stitch together with map transfers. This technique works kinda nice because it splits everything up into manageable chunks. My RPG Maker game was designed from the start with the intention of doing this, though, as it matches my PnP game I'm basing it on nicely.

Wow, this is so late....
There is a way to increase the mapsize past the limit without a plugin.
- Find the map in your projects folder
- Save and Close your project
- Open the .json in Note book or Notepad++ or something
- Find the tags "height":### and/or "width":###
- Change the Number and Save the file
- Open your project and you're done. (No need to segment your map)
MAKE SURE ALL YOUR MAP SETTING ARE FINAL FIRST!
If you don't your map will reset to 256x256 when you make an adjustment.

The last post was well over a year ago.

As a couple of the posts in this thread mention, editing the .json file produces instabilities, so is not recommended. If you think you have found a way to do that without the downsides, please post a new thread to discuss it. I would suggest Learning Javascript

Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD

Back in action to develop the indie game that has been long overdue... Final Fallacy. A game that keeps on giving! The development never ends as the developer thinks to be the smart cookie by coming back and beginning by saying... "Oh bother, this indie game has been long overdue..." How could one resist such? No-one c
