Great tutorial! I feel mapping is my personal weak point, so this really helps. A somewhat related method is to start out with one of the sample maps and remake those, just to get a starting point.

I have a lot of issues with mapping, to the point where I'm starting to wonder if everything just has to be ridiculously stylized or it won't work. As an example, a hallway with doors on both sides. This is typical of reality, but not video games because in 2D top down you can only see one wall in a hallway, if that. I've noticed that most interior maps have half walls and no doors or only doors that are on north walls, and no doors are ever side doors. Such a thing can't exist in 2D! I honestly don't know what I'm supposed to do other than the nonsense that is highly-stylized fantasy interiors. So many people have these map tutorials that say "look around at reality," but reality doesn't work. I have a large living room with a big couch, an ottoman, and a lot of empty space. I have a large dinner table in a dining room. I have walls with doors! This is true of pretty much everyone. But it looks ridiculous in RM, if it's even possible. (There's no large tables in RTP, for instance.) So... what should I do?
