My first Final Fantasy game was Tactics Advance( I got in way too late :D ).

Marche radijuju, I found this post on another forum that was funny.

"He took the dreams of children and crushed them with an iron clad fist. He burned their very minds and souls until nothing was left but callus dry husks, conditioning them perfectly for the harsh truths of reality. After breaking his friends and forcing them to accept their horrible destinies, he dragged them back to the real world where they will live regular, however more successful materialistic lives, after forcing them to realize dreams and miracles do not exist.

They might have overcome their trauma's but at the cost of their innocents. Kefka could kill the flesh of thousands, but he could never utterly destroy and brainwash the minds of mortals like Marche could. If Marche wanted to, I'd have no doubt in my mind that he would become the Emperor of Earth.

Not even Satan himself strikes fear into my very soul like Marche does."

Well, it's a clever joke if you ask me :) .

And yet that's my favorite Tactics game of the series. Thanks for sharing that, it ticked me something fierce.

what i dont get is how "ok" everyone in his clan was with being told that they were all just dreams and would cease to exist once Mewt "woke up". "I" think that would bother me a little....at least enough to where i wouldn't want to help him...but its just a game so BLEH!! Lol :)

Yeah, the plot never... made sense.

I think the idea was that they were living a bunch of fake dreams or something, and it wasn't healthy to do that, but... blah. Square never was good at psychological/physiological stuff, even when they try waaaaay too hard to be @__@

Regardless, the game is still fun to play. It's one of the few strat-RPGs that gets the formula right, in my opinion. Way too many force you to grind for hours just to unlock the "better" classes, like it's a bloody MMO or something ( I'm looking at you, Disgaea: Hour of Darkness... and N.E. games in general, really ~.~ ). That's what drove me away from the first entry.

That aside, if you get one of them Assassins early in the game, you've pretty much borked the rest of your play-through. 200+ speed ftw! BD

I would actually disagree that Marche is a bad person or what he did is wrong. FFTA is a guilty pleasure of mine in terms of plot.

After breaking his friends and forcing them to accept their horrible destinies, he dragged them back to the real world where they will live regular, however more successful materialistic lives, after forcing them to realize dreams and miracles do not exist.
Hahaha, this actually made me laugh. But allow me to elaborate why I strongly disagree with this.

FFTA's theme is all about self-acceptance and rejection of delusions and escapism.

Think about it this way, there is a reason that book lies dormant. What it could be (I haven't played FFTA2 to completion since I hate Luso) and the existence of the wish granter meant that whoever was the previous owner met an unlikely end. Else, St. Ivalice should've remained as a fantasy world instead of that real world they're experiencing now.

There is a reason that nothing lasts forever, and I feel the same way for that 'dream' Mewt got themselves into. Sooner or later, an outside force, or some drawback from the Wishgranter's powers will obliterate/end that dream, forcing them to move on without ever accepting their issues and remain forever bound to that dream. Never letting go and in the end, unable to continue on with their lives. I prefer it that way that Marche snapped them out of it.

They didn't turn into an empty husk and accept their horrible destinies. That's just ridiculous. It taught them to be strong and not let the opinions of others sway them from who they are.

Let's do some character studies! Oh and just in case, SPOILER ALERT.

Let's start with the easiest one, Ritz Malheur.

Ritz Malheur despised her white hair appearance because she thinks it makes her mother sad and she's made fun of. So she turned into a 'tomboy' badass that she is today. What she didn't know is that her mother actually felt bad because she always looked sad and her mother felt guilty for "giving her that white hair." Lack of Communication at its finest. ・゚:✩ *:゚(*❛▽❛)・゚:✩

And another thing is that, just because people teased her for it doesn't mean she's not beautiful. She has some weird insecurity and by the end of the game, she finally accepted that it is what she has and there are people who will accept her for that strange hair color. And you'll see that by the end she realized, oh hey, it wasn't so bad after all. I was just insecure. She might have bullies but Ritz proved from time and time again that she is very capable of herself but she's only shackled by society's view of what makes a girl pretty and that makes her insecure and she decides to fudge it, who cares what they think. I'm fabulous b*tches.

Callus dry husks, conditioning them perfectly for the harsh truths of reality? I think not. She has learned to accept herself and that's what matters. Remember, the only reason she wants that world to stay is that nobody is teasing her for her white hair and that it's a fun world.

Mewt Randell
Okay, kid, I understand you lost your mother, unable to move on, subject to bullying and that you view your father as the biggest loser in the world and don't love him. And in a nutshell, that -might- seem like a good excuse to feel sorry for him and want that fantasy world.

Yes, losing a love one hurts a lot. But everyone loses someone close to them, either through horrible means or natural causes of death. But Death is an integral part in the cycle of life and has to be accepted. It is frightening since people think that's it, nada. The end of the line, and that's understandable. But to make a world revolving around his wishes will bring NOTHING but pain for him.

#1 you will notice that he remains as a brat to those who oppose him, especially once Marche tries to make them accept their reality. You will also notice that the world he created has Gang Wars and the places where people permadeath, I forgot. Anyway, it symbolizes just how SELFISH his true nature is and his wish. This is all about him, not about everyone else. The only reason people seem to like it because you get to act cool and as soldiers. Playing around and man, it's perfect since it's like a game. But where does that lead you?

How do you grow up as a person? Will he remain forever as a power drunk kid, that slowly gets out of his timidness AND then control the world to his bend and will because there will always be that gaping loneliness inside his heart as time passes by? Believe me, it will happen. We've seen this far too many times in media and history. Case in point, Elizabeth Bathory. With great power, comes with great irresponsibility with a kid his age. It's possible that the wish granter is just using him as energy supply and will cast him off later once she's finished with him.

#2 He even has a sadistic side to him (Llednar Twem, read that backwards) that could symbolize what would BE him in the future if they left everything as it is. You will also notice he didn't even bother to reunite with his newfound friends, Marche/Ritz/Doned at all. He's focused about himself. It's all about memememememememe.

Mewt needs to accept the fact that, people die when they are killed. He needs to accept that even when his father is HUMAN and FLAWED, they're still family, they should support each other and accept the fact that they have to move on without mommy.

He irrates me and I don't like the fact that people are supporting this kind of mindset. He will never understand the value of life, clinging to the delusion his mother is alive, forever babying him in her little cradle. Eventually, he needs to burst out of that bubble and move on. He will become an adult himself and he has to realize this. Even if it's a lot sooner than most people.

I am not trying to say that death is an easy thing to move on from, but it is what it is, it even happens to his world and residents there could still die even. But it doesn't mean that he has the right to strip away people from the other side of the world of their dreams and build a world revolving around HIM.

By the end of the game, you will notice he grew out of it, he grew closer to his father and they finally act as a family, and he's a lot more mature and can stand up for himself than just being a damsel in distress. I don't see how this is a bad thing for him as a person. All right, next.
Marche and Doned Radiuju

I actually like this dynamic and I relate to Marche a lot since I'm taking care of an autistic baby sister IRL. I relate to Marche in every way.

It sucks that Doned is forever confined in a wheelchair, it really does. But it doesn't mean he can't achieve great things. He at least has a consciousness and in due time, he can be independent. It does suck that people might pity him for what his condition is, but it doesn't mean he can't prove them wrong. Right now, what Doned is feeling is just a mere annoyance that he HAS TO depend on people, but it doesn't mean that he'll be forever that way. He is actually cunning through your encounters and he even tried to kill you for pete's sake. What a brother. The point is, if there's a will, there's a way. In St. Ivalice reality, he will be able to easily overcome his wheelchair bound life, (he can have prosthetic legs if they advance that far in the future, who knows!) and prove to everyone that there is more to him and he doesn't need their pity.

Marche on the other hand, FEELS BAD, since he can do things that Doned can't do (e.g. be able to walk) AND SUCK at it, revealed that he's really terrible at sports. And being the eldest of the two, he has the obligation to be the adult and sacrifice the cravings of having any emotional attention from his mother. He also doesn't have a father figure. In short, he's acting as the "understanding male member of the family."

This is another case of, Doned doesn't know what awesome stuff he has and focused on himself, while Marche is sacrificing a lot of things for him. I do like the fact that Marche is concerned of what will happen to them in the future. What will happen to them should the dream just crash in the end and they're left unable to accept the things that made them want that dream world in the first place.

Marche is acting like an adult and as an adult, you get a healthy dash of, f*ck you I don't need your help. I never asked for it, without thinking of how it will mentally destroy me in the future. He.Cares. and is the only one who actually tries to reunite with everyone out of worry even when he had his share of fun. For Marche, it was fun that he was finally be able to act as a kid, bashing random monsters, engaging in fun and dangerous gang wars, but he knows that he can't forever live that way and how wrong it is that they're escaping from reality.

Just because Doned is unable to walk doesn't mean that a perfectly and physically fine person is mentally healthy or doesn't have a say to this entire situation.
They might have overcome their trauma's but at the cost of their innocents.
What Trauma? You mean their frivolous social issues? (okay that might be too harsh, but if you look at Ritz's reason) Being ignorant (aka Innocence) is not a good way to live anyone's life. They have to learn how it is to be an adult. I mean come on, you can literally permadeath beings in Mewt's dream world. How is that "innocent?" They're just lizards/monsters/some dream world people that could possibly, actually have another life on the real ivalice and we're annihilating them in some places or putting them to Jail.

Think about it for a moment, Either you DIE or you go to Jail until bailed out or be humiliated publicly that affects the livelihood of your entire guild. And most of if not all events are all about fighting, the world world is revolved around fighting. If you want good income, you have to be a fighter or rely on fighters or be a lawbreaker. Notice how Mewt's world is extremely limiting by giving you limited choices as well in battle. You can't hit this or that or you can't do this and that. It might be gameplay related, but if you connect it to the world and why some people become lawbreakers, since Mewt's rules are stupid, it should tell you something about his psyche/personality.

Oh and another thing, you know what's traumatizing? Having the power to actually dictate what will happen to a person's life. Throwing them to Jail or KILL them or humiliate them because there's no judges around.

What kind of f*cked up world is Mewt leading?

Also, Rebel_Prince brings up a good point, how come nobody is going ?_? at Marche erasing their existence. One possible explanation is that the dream world is catered to their needs/desires, e.g. Montblanc's convenient appearance to save Marche and they might not be even real. Of course this can be quickly debunked, but w/e.

And thus I gushed and not really organized, but I hope that brings my point.

If I were in the same position as Marche, I'd do the same. And thus why I'm totally fine with him having Ramza's hairstyle. As the wiki gorgeously summarizes, they stand against manipulation or in Marche's case, living in a false reality.

Well, at least we get to see them in FFTA2 in a way.

[spoiler ALERT]

Mewt reappears at the end of the game, and is mentioned at the start. Although, time has passed, and now he's a librarian. He just says to Luso that he was once in that world too(Though I don't really know who had it easier in the fantasy world...)
Oh yeah, did anyone notice the teddy bear he still had? It's on his desk still.
Ritz reappears if you noticed at the very start of the game on the questionaire.
Marche.. well. let's see. Go FAR, FAR into the game, and get montblanc into your party(Yay! I got the black mage again! He hasn't improved much over the years, has he?). Whenever he falls in battle.. he says something close to Marche's name.. And that's the last I've ever heard of about this guy.
Well then. At least we all cleared things up. I just thought of Marche as some normal kid who ended up in a fantasy world with his friend, and back when I played it, all I thought was "KILL EVERYONE I'M A SOLOIST.. MEWT'S DARKER SIDE IS A ****.. wait.. what am I doing again?".

Think about it this way, there is a reason that book lies dormant. What it could be (I haven't played FFTA2 to completion since I hate Luso) and the existence of the wish granter meant that whoever was the previous owner met an unlikely end.
Okay, when I finished it(The final boss was so weak..)(Though Hurdy had a nice song as Luso left. :) ) Luso Clemens returns back to the world. Your correct on that one for sure :) , but I still wonder. He 'technically' went back for them in Final Fantasy Tactics:War of the Lions as a bonus character, but somehow, he ended up in the wrong timezone, :) . In fact, my first RPG I tried to make was all around this idea(I placed a lot of planning early on, and had a full-blown story planned, but I never really tried to start it because back then, I was like ALOT of newbies. I directly tried to make a dream RPG :D .),(But then I made a short twenty minute one with mostly story dialogue with a different idea..)

What kind of f*cked up world is Mewt leading?
Hehehehe. I don't know, Archeia. Seems like a happy place.

Ritz

Ritz story was really overdramatic and kinda funny, like i mean it's just so unreal i don't know where to start. she hated white hair and her mother cried while dying it....... pink? if you're ashamed of having an unnatural hair colour, why is your go-to pink? wtf. anyway, ritz and her mother needed a good slap of reality. it's arguable this scenario is a clunky allegory for a variety of self-esteem issues related to your appearance, but the one they chose for it is too unreal for me to find it anything but goofy.

mewt

this one is a bit more real. lol not by much. like mewt has a character arc to overcome, and problems of his own that feel legitimate. his overcoming of said problems is clunky and rough, like somehow by marche wrecking his fantasy world he comes to terms with things? like its plot convenient surely but it does kinda feel like marche crushes mewts dreams, and mewt grows as a result somehow? god this game is clunky, i enjoyed it when i was 12 though. mewt was kinda messed up though so maybe crushing his dreams was ok

doned

marche is an ableist douchenozzle, no wonder doned needs to get away from him, godspeed doned. the plot arc between these two was troublingly problematic and clearly written by a person who didn't really understand the issues at work here, it's trash. more trash than ritz arc.

the story is bad. it's too easy to read marche as doing something bad, and you need to jump through intellectual hoops to see how it conveys the intended message. and the worse thing is, the story wouldn't really have to change too much and convey the things it wanted to, it just would need tighter theming and writing. maybe the stakes could have been raised for marche personally, and he could have also had something to "escape" from, or something i don't know. it's kinda like ff8 in that regard almost, where the deliberately being obtuse, and certainly non-canonically readings ring more true or sometimes even better. But the game is still pretty fun, I dig it.

They won't even really notice I think when they're gone since they're all just a dream... I think it might have more negative effect to Marche than anybody else for that matter...

+ oh well, FF-X also has this dream stuff...

Marche did the right thing.

Fake!Ivalice was just as fake and harmful as a drug addiction.
As someone who lived their entire childhood basically in a state of perpetual daydream I can say this statement is absolutely correct. (Of course the message of the game was lost on me as a child playing it and it was always my least favorite tactics game.) Real life is so much better overall than vices, any vice. It's only when we spend our reality lost in such things that we lose sight and mistakenly believe that fantasy is a better alternative.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
