So whenever I send out the demo of my game to my beta testers they can’t play past the first battle. As soon as the enemy attacks the game says it’s missing the howl.png file which is used in the basic attack and several other animations. I checked the files and howl is there but for some reason it isn’t loading. Regardless of excluding unused files or not, I tried both. It won’t work. Anyone have any ideas why? Should I switch which animation the basic attack uses?

Could you please mention how you distribute the game?
Do you use a compiler? Do you just zip up the game folder?

The one thing MV needs carefull attention to is the making of both files and directories.
MV absolutely requires all filenames to follow networking rules.

Under networking rules, howl.png and Howl.png are two different files, because H is a different letter than h.
Windows has an override however, if it looks for a file named howl.png but finds a different file Howl.png instead it simply loads the wrong file instead of throwing out an error messages like it should.

That can cause such problems if for example the engine is told to use Howl.png but the real filename is howl.png. In such a case the game will work locally during playtesting but fail as soon as it is deployed, especially if deployed to non-windows.
That is because only Microsoft thought it would be a good idea to install such an idiotic override, all other OS didn't.

That is good to know and yes I noticed Caps are important. I use the deploy button, and upload the folder with everything in it to my google drive and have my testers download it from there. As far as I can tell there is only one copy of howl but I’ll check for caps or not. I’m not sure what else to check other than this.

Also remember to not use any illegal characters in your filenames as that will also get you an error message :)

Well its one of the base files that comes with the program. Its just the animation for the basic attack.

Hey ArgonianSam
I had the same problem today and i know where the problem is.
You use YEP_X_AnimatedSVEnemies right?
This script uses some animations that the RPG Maker won't deploy as long as you don't use them outside of the script.
The "Deploy" from the RPG Maker don't look what the scripts need, just what you used in the RPG Maker directly.

So if you deploy it, you need to put the Howl.png manually in your "img/animations" folder.
You also need to put some other files manually in your deployed game, but I don't know which.
I bypassed it by deploy the whole game (don't use the "Exclude unused files").

I hope I could help you.
