I wasn't sure if this goes to the general scripts or the script requests.

https://rpgmaker.net/scripts/272/

First just to be clear, I'm not claiming ownership in any way and I will give credit to both the modifier and the original author properly. The guy doesn't mention anywhere in terms of usage that he doesn't allow modification.

The script works great, but I would like a bit fancier menu at the start. Something to save the player the trouble of going through every entry until he can find the one he likes, and IF possible, I'd like the entries to belong to some categories. For example: "Characters" "Monsters", etc. I don't have anything specific in mind when it comes to making a better menu for it, so go ahead and be as imaginitive as you like.

The script will be used in the free to play game Broken Reality (keep in mind, the game MIGHT eventually get a dlc after it's released on steam. I have already released a game there so don't consider it unlikely.)

Thanks for the help! I have set this post to set notifications directly to my mail so expect responses in a short amount of time for any questions.

(edit: modes removed the script code I had attached here so I guess it isn't allowed, you'll have to visit the link to see the code)

I had to remove the script from your post, as authors would prefer you to link back to where the script is found. This makes it easier to bug fix later as they don't have to track down multiple locations. Can you edit your post and the point where I put (snip) replace that with a link to where the script can be found? Thanks.

This is doable, but needs more information. Because I can be imaginative and still not create what you're looking for. So let's dive into a bit more. When the player clicks on Journal, what do you want to pop up? A smaller command window with categories or maybe replace the character panel with them or maybe we go to a new page like the original script but with categories? How many different categories? Are they static/fixed from game start or do they only show up as you get entries? Is there one layer of organization or two or more? Think about the content you want it to hold and work back from there if you have to.

I'm willing to help but what I (nor most other scripters) don't want to do, is go to the trouble of coding something only to have it not be what you wanted/intended and then have to start over, wasting both your time and mine. Also, I'm willing to help you design it as well, but I don't know your game or what you're going to use this for, so you'll have to explain those if I'm to be able to help.

Thanks for the reply Mobius,
it is not mandatory, but keeping the spirit of the original script, I was thinking of the main menu window being replaced by a new window, showing only a single category each time (have them be unlocked as the player discovers the first entry for each of them), the order doesn't matter, and I can program new categories in it myself. Below the category there could be a small description (about two dialogue boxes worth). The player can use left and right to switch between different categories (I imagine there will be about 6-7 total categories).

Once a category is selected, a new smaller window can pop-up with the discovered entries for said category (it could just display one at a time and move left/right to show the rest), from where the player can select the one he wants to see.

Also if possible, when viewing an entry, I'd like the left/right keys to send you to the next entry of that category, and not the next entry in general.

See the picture below for a rough sketch of what I was thinking (again though, I don't really mind diviations, if something is too much trouble to make or you just don't feel like it, I'll work with whatever I have).

Below is a rough sketch of a menu image as I imagined it, but don't feel restricted by it.

Here's what I've got. I followed your design as near as I could. Let me know if you find any bugs.

sorry for the delay, apparently the forums forgot what "notification mail" means.
1st)Thanks for the effort
2nd)For some reason the script pops up an error with a neonblack mode that makes a little image popup everytime I gain an item. I'm not sure how the two are related, but apparently there is a problem. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=232916365 It should be something minor, but I haven't had any luck in removing the problem.

Neonblack's script modifies one of the built-in classes Window_Selectable which the journal script uses. I've done some initial testing and it doesn't look like an easy fix. I'll likely have to re-write a good chunk of my script. Give me a couple days and I'll get back to you.

Edit: Never mind the couple days thing. It ended up being easier to rewrite then I thought. Use v1.4 below and you should be good.

Eh... So, remember how I said it works? Apparently I didn't search enough.
1)The titles don't appear in the menu. Capture1.PNG

2)When I click on an entry, I get this error.

Did you format your entries correctly in the script editor? And did you start a new game when playtesting?

As far as I can tell yeah, and yeah. Sending you the test text I used for this (the only changes I made to the script). of the only change to the examples I made as a test:
Code:
(line 99) Entry[0] = ["In times when men had just shred off the fur of their ancestors, tribes fought off with each other in the savannahs. Lightning and winds were their gods, in the name of which men would gladly fall. Some called these gods Blood Gods, for their desire for sacrifices seemed insatiable indeed. In such a tribe war, the woman who would later be known as Cassilda was captured. A woman of savage times, Cassilda's toned body drew the attention of many and even gods were not above carnal pleasures.", "The Birth of the Monster Pt1", 2]

(line 115) Categories[2] = ["Pages from manuscripts and weird books describing a mythology alien to you.", "The Mythos"]

These are the ONLY things I have changed.

Ok, once again I've found what I did wrong lol. I'll make changes and send you a revised copy when I'm able.
