Almost every individual has played video games before. All types, some types or a few types: action, fantasy, RPG, co-op, simulator... the list goes on. However, there is one game genre that many have played that has occasionally struck an unforeseen and involuntary fear within them. That game genre is horror. Some people claim that the horror games of the past are the most scariest and some claim the complete opposite. What is the most frightening game you have ever played?

I have a number of very terrifying games I have played:

- Calling (Wii) - Even though they are mainly jumpscares, the randomness of their occurrences still are unnerving to this day.
- The Penumbra Collection - The Second Game mostly had me on edge because there was a hideous yet terrifying figure stalking the hallways, and I had to stop before I made a turn or look behind me occasionally because the atmosphere was that tense. You didn't know when he was going to appear and when he did, the chase scenes were near endless.

- Fatal Frame (PS2) - The Fatal Frame series is my favorite horror series to date, because of it's enthralling story and intriguing characters. When I first purchased this Classic from the PSN store, I didn't know exactly what I had just done. Even though you had a camera to exorcise spirits with, the desolate, solitary setting of the mansion in which the game takes place in and the appearance, behavior and stories of the ghosts, the game was utterly frightening from beginning to end and my interest was not discarded not once.

- Siren (PS2) Arguably the hardest game I have ever played and yet a very eerie, alarming tale as well. Strategy practically breathes within this game as you have to time all of your movements perfectly, keep an eye on your enemies, watch your back simultaneously, avoid the sight of the shibito (the undead of the island the game takes place on), all under the cover of fog and the night, relying on your wits about you, makes the game strangely satisfying and practically wills you to go on. The game is very frustratingly hard, the side-missions are seemingly small but very important story wise as many players can miss a story event multiple times, the story itself and it's characters are unusual and hard to get accustomed to (especially with the voice acting), the combat is very clunky, but all in all, it's a great horror game, but only for those high in patience, and those with a reliable game walkthrough guide.

So, what are the most frightening games you have ever played?

Hmm, I don't usually play horror games, my imagination tends to run wild and I just can't take it.

I told a friend that I never played Dead Space and he said that ''man, you've got to play it''... I tried to, got so spooked that I quit quite early ^^'.

It really depends on the game though, some people find Slenderman scary, I played it without twitching. Was more annoying than scary.

I don't know what it was about Dead Space, there is just something about that game that freaks me the hell out.

I don't play horror games. I get scared FAR too easily and just don't see how a game created to prey on fear can be an enjoyable experience. But, looking at a few horror games out there, I think that the horror genre has become far too dependent on gore and jump scares. In my opinion, gore and jump scares are to horror what sex and poop jokes are to comedy and explosions are to action movies. The most crude, bare-bones, unrefined type of horror there is. When I heard about Five Nights at Freddy's I actually had nightmares imagining how the game played and how to scares would be implemented. Then I watched a Let's Play of it, and boy was I underwhelmed. The entirety of the game is just waiting for a jump scare. If I know a jump scare's coming, I won't be afraid of it. At all. Five Nights at Freddy's still scares me, but not for the actual game. I'm afraid because of the dread I had imagining what the game would be like.

But, if I were to play a horror game I would play Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. It might just be the Nintendo fanboy in me talking, but everything I've heard about this game describes my ideal horror game. The scares are psychological, it gives you enough power to think there might be some hope then crushes it, and it targets the player. The sanity meter causes a variety of effects that cause the player to think something is wrong on his end, such as the volume lowering like the player is sitting on the remote, or the game seemingly glitching. It looks to me to be a great horror game that I would play if I wasn't such a yellow-belly. Oh well.

I just got the copy of this I ordered. Unfortunately, my PS4 isn't going to be delivered until tomorrow. My patience is not that good.

It's hard to call that horror, it all boils down to if you have a childhood fear of Animatronics or not.

Personally, I was scared to death of them even as late as middle school, so you bet I would vote Five Nights at Freddie's anyways.

Yeah. That's why it didn't scare me. If a horror game somehow managed to harness my crippling fear of heights, then I'd be worried. Seriously, I can't even climb a stepladder without freaking out.

I can't really think of a horror game that actually frightened me before. The last game that actually scared me was the legend of Zelda: a link to the past of all games once you get to the golden lands and have to fight that fire breathing-mace tailed scorpion-thing... That thing kept me up all night; of corse I was like 5.

Since then though, I can't really think of a game that's actually scared me. Games like amnesia and resident evil 3 have had their moments where they'd put me a little on edge but beyond that the horror genre doesn't really hold much horror to me.

I feel the same way. I love horror but i've struggled to find one that actually scared me. I feel like I'm a master at predicting jump scares and so many horror games follow a 'formula'. Amnesia had some good atmosphere, and the first 10 minutes of Outlast was looking good until I worked out how predictable and repetitive it was, with absolute **** AI.

Last game that scared me was Ocarina of Time, those wallmasters made me and my bro stop playing it for a whole year until I had the courage to push through. Everyone said they hated the redeads and the deadhand but surprisingly they didnt bother me the slightest.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
