So I am looking at moving over to steam as there are a lot of things on offer for rpgmaker (inc rpg maker vx ace).

If I want to move my project over to steam, where do I move all my resources too (as I assume, steam bought resources have a different location?)

Any help on the transition over would be good or if its a case of just opening my project from the external HDD and away you go!

(any drawbacks of steam client I should know about - bar internet access required?)

Cheers!

No - because resources are NOT connected to the editor, they are connected to the project.

There are so many possible resources that they are never automatically added, but only when you manually import them into the project. Once they are inside the project, they are automatically accessed no matter what program version you use.

The only difference is where the resources are stored before importing - you need to point the resource manager there of course.

The only real drawback of Steam that I found is that you have to make sure all your projects have different names (not only different folders, the name inside the database has to be different), because the cloud is based on the project name and if you have three "Test", "Test", "test" projects in different folders instead of "Test 1", "Test 2", "Test 3" then the cloud synchronisation will assume they are the same project and copy files over even if they are in differen locations.

(and the saving/project opening) can be slower if there is a problem with synchronising the updates)

That's not 100% correct, as long as one folder it doesn't load up to the cloud on the same project. Same goes for the steam workshop.

For example on is saved like:

rosemary elegance mare/game.exe (game name: Equestria Souls)

Cheeky Moon/game.exe (game name: Equestria Souls)

It still don't overwrite the same Steam Cloud file, but the saving and loading takes then about a minute, there you're right. :/

But I see no reason to buy a new licence on Steam only to move there.  o_O

The Steam Workshop is not really worth it, because you can only upload a total of 1GB data to your Cloud.

And the workshop mostly has really short and bad games there, even there are some really great ones too. But that are the minority. ;) (\s/)

Also, for instance.

If I buy a resource from steam, I can only use it on the steam client? or can I buy the packs and move them to the client without VX Ace game installed on steam?

You can import them, maybe. But not sure, if they will be installed without having the RPG Maker.
Because Steam usually don't let you download add ons without having the game / programm.
I tried that for Dragon Age, because I only had for the steam sale the add ons cash and wanted to buy the game next month.

But steam don't let you download the add ons without having the game, which sucks in my oppinion. :/
Because in that case, I may bought the game as disc verion or on Origin and only want to buy the cheap add on versions there...
Guess nothing is perfect in this world. :/ (\s/)

to purchase resources on Steam, you need the Maker on steam. However, once purchased you can use the resources anywhere (steam or standalone), you just have to know where steam stores the resources.

@Cheeky Moon:

Sorry, that is not correct - different folders with same project titles and the contents will be overwritten from the wrong cloud project - happened to me several times when I was creating a new demo for the ability system and evgenji gave the bugfixes in the old demo project.

It might be that it has been solved since then (I reported the problem) however, I haven't tested it in months.

I think Steam should change that, so you can also only download the add ons. Because there are many reasons, why you want to do that. :) (\s/)

@andar:
I did it last time yesterday and the one it downloads from the Cloud or Workshop is still the same as it was. ;)
Both have 100% the same name, same typing.

Steam cannot change that without reprogramming everything, because they use the DLC-Structure for game add-ons for that, and that is part of their inner DRM requirements. And I don't think that they will reprogram their structure just to make it convenient for RM users...

@Cheeky Moon:

If you have a completely different project, give it the same name as one of your existing/workshop projects, copy it into the project ordner used by you other projects, then try to open it with "Manage project" - do you open the workshop project, or do you open the different project? and what are the contents of the new, different project's folder if you try to open it with the regular version after that?
